Natural disasters are among the most pressing risks facing the world, both in the short and longer term.
In recent years, there have been a series of major natural disasters including Libya flooding. On 10 September
2023, Storm Daniel swept across eastern Libya, affecting most of the region. The storm brought heavy rainfall
to the coastal city of Derna, where two dams collapsed; causing a "tsunami" of water that swept away entire
neighborhoods. “The entire coastal area of the country was affected,” explains Camille Saulnier, head of the
Libya mission for Première Urgence Internationale. “In Derna, the town worst hit by the disaster, two dams
broke, causing a gigantic mudslide that engulfed everything”, he added
The consequences for the people and infrastructure affected are unprecedented. To date, the floods
have left at least 4,352 people dead, more than 8,000 missing and more than 43,000 displaced. Georgette
Gagnon, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Libya, said early reports showed that dozens of villages and
towns were “severely affected ... with widespread flooding, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life.”
Through this Emergency Appeal, a number of foreign governments along with Libyan Red Crescent
teams and volunteers have sent messages of support and solidarity to Libya. Several nations, including
Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Tunisia, and Turkey, said they were ready to provide emergency shelter, psychosocial
support, and healthcare, clean water and food to affected communities and restore family links with missing
loved ones.
