Inexpensive Solar-Powered Classroom Fan

Energy sustainability and environmental consciousness have become

increasingly vital while facing climate change and resource scarcity. Young minds have

been molded and trained in schools to adopt sustainable practices. One such hands-on

approach towards accomplishing this includes the solar-powered classroom fan,

offering a simple yet cost-effective experience that can teach the basic principles of

renewable energy through capturing sunlight to cool classrooms without the aid of main

electricity.

This project on an efficient cooling system at schools was highly relevant in the

Philippines. It was oppressively hot and humid, while sunlight was abundant. Since it is

solar-powered, this solar fan functions well without contributing to additional carbon print

because of its reliance on local and recyclable materials. In inviting students to the said

program, the investigation into clean energy solutions is promoted and how the world

can become more sustainable via renewable energy.

The components used in the solar classroom fan are relatively simple, so it is a

great learning endeavor. It consists of a solar panel that captures the sunlight to be

converted into electricity that can power a DC motor with blades attached. The ON/OFF

switch saves energy when not in use. A rechargeable battery could complement the

system and store energy for days when it's cloudy or at night. The frame of the fan is

done using recycled wood, bamboo, or plastic. Thus, the project shows an

environmentalist approach.
This is a cost-effective project because materials can easily be sourced from

hardware stores locally or online retailers. Procurement of materials locally also assists

in saving students and school funds. The project encourages students to think

creatively, be resourceful, and understand renewable energy and sustainability.

How It Works

1. Solar Power Generation: The sunrays are captured and converted into DC

electricity by the solar panel, and that is powering the fan.

2. Working of DC Motor: Plastic blades of the fan attach to the motor with

electrical wires. These electrical wires connect the solar panel with the DC motor which

eventually gives power to the fan blades.

3. Flushing Wind Generation by Blades: These are very light weight, made of

plastic, and attach to the motor which creates flowing wind towards a classroom for

cooling.

4. ON/OFF Switch: the fan comes equipped with a switch, which people can

make use of to save energy: they turn it off whenever it isn't needed

5. Optional Battery Backup: making use of a rechargeable battery means one

can store solar energy for later consumption. This way, it will keep on functioning during

cloudy days or at night

6. Recycled Frame: its components are held in a recycled frame that provides a

stable base while encouraging environmental responsibility.

Why is this an eco-friendly project? The solar-powered fan symbolizes

sustainability as it uses the sun's energy, thereby not requiring the use of electric power

and heavily reducing carbon emissions. The plastic bottle blades and wooden or
bamboo frame comprise reduced waste, and students are made to think creatively

about daily products. Such a project goes a long way in developing green practices and

generating sustainability-thinking by students.

Benefits from the Project

1. Eco-Friendly: The fan reduces carbon emissions by using solar power and

integrating recycled materials.

2. Cost-Effective: The materials are affordable and locally accessible, making it a

practical solution for schools, particularly in regions like the Philippines.

3. Educational: The project introduces students to renewable energy and

electrical circuits, providing hands-on learning about energy conservation and

sustainability.

4. Easy Assembly The solar powered fan comes with easy assembly, meaning

that the learner can depend on developing problem-solving skills while working

individually or in a group.

Applications of Solar Powered Fan

The solar powered fan both provides classroom application and practical

application that is also accommodated outside the class setting.

1. Cooling Classrooms: During hot weather, the fan keeps classrooms cool,

which increases comfort and productivity.

2. Learning Device: The fan helps the instructional aspects present a manner of

how solar energy works and motivates the students to gain more information on

renewable sources of energy.

3. Idea Generation, Prototyping: The project might inspire a student to conceive

more advanced solar-based innovations, hence encouraging innovation and creativity.

4. Outdoor Use: The fan can be used outdoors like in a playground or a garden

where electricity might be scarce, but comfort in outdoor spaces is assured.
