CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The Philippines now meets over a third of its energy needs through

renewable sources according to an article from CNBC.1 Over the last couple of

years, it is said that 1100 megawatts of renewable energy in solar and wind space

were installed. Considering the type of weather in the country, solar power is one

of the widely used alternative energy source for the community and even in

introducing cost-efficient products.2

The frantic growth of solar energy in the Philippines attracted foreign

investors to commission the largest solar farm in Southeast Asia – Cadiz City,

Negros Occidental. According to the David Russell (foreign investor - chief

executive officer of Equis, Asia's largest independent infrastructure fund manager),

the market is expected to grow by about 20 times in the next ten years, making the

solar energy technology cheaper. 2

In the demand of our times, many products are being introduced to the

market that will offer the consumers the convenience that they need. For a

traveler’s point of view, it is essential to have a cooler within his reach to keep his

food and beverages fresh. But usually, the coolers that the market offers are those

plastic/styro boxes that needs to be filled with a whole lot of ice.

Travel coolers are much more than ice filled portable plastic boxes. High

quality ice coolers are designed with the technology to refrigerate food all day long.

Some coolers only need to be plugged into a normal power outlet. While in some
cases, when having outdoor trips, power outlets are not easily found, so the cooler

can’t serve its purpose.

With the use of renewable energy source, the researchers aim to introduce

a solar powered multi-purpose kit which includes the use of peltier cooler (to cool

food and beverages), a speaker which can be used for entertainment and an

emergency light that can be used as an emergency light during blackouts or

camping. The components of the kit shall be placed in a case altogether. The

peltier cooler shall be connected to a battery. The battery gains its energy source

from its connection to the solar panel, and it shall also be able to supply the

speaker and emergency light.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to introduce a solar powered multi-purpose outdoor kit

which includes three (3) components, a cooler, speaker & emergency lights.

Specifically, it intends to answer the following:

1. What is the design and construction of the Solar Powered Cooler &

Multipurpose Outdoor Kit?

2. How will the device perform in terms of:

a. Sustainability of Temperature inside the cooler to cool food and

beverages

b. Time duration to fully charge the battery which shall supply the 3

components
Significance of the Study

The study shall give awareness to the people when it comes to solar energy

application. It shall be beneficial to the following:

Travelers & Campers. By introducing this outdoor kit, this would be a big

help for travelers who want to pack lightly. Instead of bringing the cooler, speakers

and emergency lights separately, they can have it altogether through the kit.

Business enthusiasts. The study can be a new venture for business by

introducing a portable kit which includes a cooler that uses solar power and peltier

modules with speakers and emergency light. The device may be cost-efficient

compared to other electric coolers.

Future researchers. The study can help the future researches who will try

to conduct similar studies. This study shall be open for future developments.

Scope and Delimitation

This study shall focus on the design and construction of Solar Powered

Cooler & Multipurpose Outdoor Kit. The researchers shall evaluate the device’s

performance in terms of its sustainability of temperature insider the cooler, and

how will the solar panel supply the battery in order to energize the three

components.

Definition of Terms

The researchers shall define the following terms:

Solar Power. It is produced by collecting sunlight and converting it into

electricity. This is done by using solar panels, which are large flat panels made up

of many individual solar cells.3

Solar Panel. A solar panel is actually a collection of solar (or photovoltaic)

cells, which can be used to generate electricity through photovoltaic effect. These

cells are arranged in a grid-like pattern on the surface of solar panels.

Peltier Cooler. Thermoelectric coolers operate according to the Peltier

effect. The effect creates a temperature difference by transferring heat between

two electrical junctions. A voltage is applied across joined conductors to create an

electric current. When the current flows through the junctions of the two

conductors, heat is removed at one junction and cooling occurs. Heat is deposited

at the other junction. 4

Cooler. An insulated box used to keep food or drink cool.
