CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION OF RESULTS

This chapter is about the presentation of results from the data gathered through

interview. The participants’ answers to our research questions will be analyzed through

its core ideas as a major theme. We will justify why it is considered a major theme with

supporting details from the interview transcriptions and will be presented in tables.

Experiences on the Usage of Solar Panels as a Renewable Energy Source

These set of questions consist of our participants’ experiences towards the study

or topic. The participants are the Ateneo’s grade 12 teachers as they are of the school’s

faculty, they probably were oriented about the campus and what lies within it, and so

this became an opportunity for us researchers to ask them about their insights towards

it being in the said campus for more than 2 years.

The major themes of the participants in question 1 is alternative energy source

and class continuation. They acknowledge that solar panels are the school’s alternative

energy source for electricity and that it can provide electricity to rooms for the

continuation of classes.

Major Themes Core Ideas/Responses

Alternative Energy  Solar panels are used when there is no electricity

Source  Solar panels are alternative source of energy and

function as a storage of energy

Class  Solar Panels bring power to projectors during a

Continuation brownout/blackout.
 Classes can be continued because of solar panels

 The energy stored in solar panels can give energy to

projectors in terms of brownouts/blackouts

Benefit to the  Light is renewable and it doesn’t cause any threat to the

Institution environment and it contributes to the institutions.

Table 1. Experiences on the usage of solar panels as a renewable energy source

Alternative Energy Source

This is considered as a major theme because it can store enough energy in case

of upcoming brownouts and it can lessen the costs of the electric bill that the school is

paying for. When electricity is gone for a while, solar panels as alternative energy

resource can provide enough electricity. It was told by the 2 participants that main

theme of solar is alternative source of energy.

It is described by participant V:

“Of course because it is an alternative energy source, we can store energy using

the solar panels in cases our electricity goes out for example blackout or something.

We have a stored energy from solar energy. I guess that’s one advantage. And then

another advantage is because we need electricity in our profession when we’re working

using our gadget we need a stored energy.”

Class Continuation

This is also considered as a major theme as is it stated by the participants that

solar energy can be very helpful when a brownout occurs and it can continue the class

on the same way as there is energy. The absence of electricity cannot be felt because
of the solar panels as storing enough energy to support the needs of the people when it

comes to electricity.

Also as presented by participant V:

“I think with or without the solar panels classes will still continue. There are

instances still that in terms of brownout, the projector will be turned off, but the class will

still continue.”

Benefit to the Institution

Solar panels can benefit to the institution as it is emphasized by one participant.

Solar panels can help in the leaning of the students in the university. As we all know,

electricity that is accumulated from solar panels can contribute to the institution because

it delivers a big savings from allotted money for electricity bills.

presented by participant A:

“With regards to the solar panels it is very important during blackouts. Because

it will give even any little sufficient energy to the classrooms, because during blackouts

the solar panels within the campus will provide lights and in some other classrooms

they will still provide electricity for the projectors which is very helpful in the discussion

of the teacher and the students.”

Significance of Solar Panels in the Institution

Solar Panels are considered to be an alternative energy source that will replace

nonrenewable sources. The installment of solar panels is very beneficial to the

institution that procures that. Ateneo de Davao University for example, considers this

sustainable energy source to be very essential since it is a prominent facility it acquired.

Whether it is advantageous or not, the solar panels are part of the essential tools
needed for conserving energy.

Installment solar panels are an investment to a brighter future. An institution like

AdDU is a beneficiary of the renewable energy source. Senior High School Teachers

had already gained a two or more experience in teaching within the institution.  It is

credible to ask them how to conserve energy with the presence of solar panels in their

workplace. This is a sufficient way to analyze more and gather information for the study.

Significance of Solar Panels in the Institution

Major Themes Core Ideas/Responses

Economically and  Solar Panels can help the institution save

more money for other expenses
Environmentally Significant  Solar panels can lessen the expenditures of

the school.

 Solar Panels both save money and the

environment

 Solar Panels do not bring pollution and

lessens the expenditures of the school

Convenient  Solar Panels can provide energy for
generating electricity.
 Solar panels are durable.
Table 2. Significance of Solar Panels in the Institution

Economically and Environmentally Significant.

With Solar Panels, the school can change the expenses they usually charge. It

does not require a big amount of money to sustain its function. The more panels

installed in the school, the more money it can save. Rather than what is the usual way

to purchase electricity, the solar panels can be an alternative instead. The expenditures
of the school that is designated for paying the electricity bill can be used to other things

more worthy to finance.

It is described by the participant R:

“We know that these non-renewable energy sources are not also

environmentally friendly and so we need an environmentally friendly renewable

energy sources I guess that the solar panels that could do the job. Giving us this

kind of energy that which is not, that which we can acquire from a source which

will last long of course and then that which is healthy for the environment.”

Convenient

The adequate function of solar panels is more than how it collects and stores

energy. In the process of gathering energy from sunlight, there is no need of a manual

labor from a worker. There is a sufficient way to gather the solar energy without

disturbing a worker’s time. It is considered to have a very accessible function that

provides a big contribution to where it is installed.

Stated by participant P:

“Aside from solar panels, we can easily get energy from the solar since it is

already given that solar panels have solar power unlike from the other generators that it

is still needed to recharge in order for the electricity to be accessible. It is like a cycle,

through the solar energy we can get solar power and we can easily recharge and use

electricity anytime unlike the other generators. “

Learnings about Solar Panels as an Alternative Energy Source

This section considers the answers of the participants in question 3 which is all

about their learnings on the usage of solar panels as an alternative energy source.

Solar panels produce a great amount of learning for every individual with sufficient

experience with it like our participants, which are the teachers of the Ateneo de Davao

Senior High School.

What the participants have learned about solar panels are the two major themes

which is the conservation of electricity and the promotion of solar panels in the

institution. They learned through solar panels how to conserve and save electricity by

not wasting any energy on appliances when not in use. It also acknowledges the

promotion of these solar panels to the whole institution to the whole student body.

Major Themes Core Ideas/Responses

Conservation of  Consumption of energy is to be automated in order to

Electricity serve energy

 Be sensitive when using the appliances in the

classroom in order to conserve energy.

 Solar Panels help us to conserve energy

Promotion of Solar  Solar Panels should be installed in the whole campus

Panels  Introduce solar panels to the students

 Solar Panels should be used as a main energy

source
Table 3. Learnings about Solar Panels as an Alternative Energy Source

Conservation of Electricity
The context gives us an idea on how should we conserve electricity, and solar

panels help us conserve energy, it also sustains clean energy to provide to us. Solar

panels give us advantages that are a great help for the university and to the people

inside the university.

As stated by participant R:

“We should be more sensitive when using the appliances in the classroom in order to

conserve energy. We are very gifted because we have solar panels that helps us

conserve energy. Also, as a backup electricity in terms of blackout.”

Promotion of Solar Panels

Solar panels, promoting it gives awareness to the people about the importance of

it. The curiosity of the people in terms of the solar panels will encourage them to explore

the idea of the solar panels. the importance and the use of solar panel will convince the

people to also promote the solar panels to the people that are not aware of the use of

the solar panels.

As also stated by participant R:

“to introduce solar panels to the students, so they will be knowledgeable of the

importance of the solar panels and what is the use of the solar panels in the university.”

                                                      CHAPTER 5
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

This chapter presents the discussion and implications of the research. The

chapter discusses the major themes of each research question and how they are

supported by our related literature. the chapter also presents the implications of our

study to our research agenda and to our strand, STEM. This chapter also comprises of

our concluding remarks.

Alternative Energy Source

In times of desperate need for electricity, acquiring renewable energy is the most

convenient option to take. We direct this study towards the renewable energy produced

by solar panels. It being available almost all the time and being built to last as long as it

could, it is a very wise alternative source of energy especially when there is an

electricity shortage in an area.

In the paper of Hernandez, R., et al. (2015), they discussed that the actual
making of replacing method which uses non-renewable sources to collect electricity was

inspired by the increasing amount of carbon dioxide that the earth is currently receiving.

From all of the renewable sources of energy, the solar energy has the greatest potential

in helping the mitigation of carbon dioxide production or other production of any

pollutants. In the conclusion of their study, it was pointed out that developing this solar

energy would be the best solution to minimize the negative impacts of the fuel’s method

of obtaining electricity. These negative impacts they are referring includes the increase

of pollutants in the planet which can lead to the extinction and invasions of some

species in earth.

Electric prices have been very expensive over the past decade. Because of the

use a great deal of electricity, schools and universities have been some of the primary

victims of these price hikes. In fact, colleges and universities have access to some of

the least costly systems available. As systems get bigger, their cost per watt price falls.

This means colleges and universities can enjoy affordable power without the guessing

game of the grid (Conserve Energy Future, n. d.).

Class Continuation

Unexpected blackouts sometimes occur in some areas of the city but most of the

time it is the whole city that goes dark during blackouts. The city is progressing and

there are people working 24/7. Most establishments have generators in use during

these types of circumstances even when there are several other alternatives for it such

as the solar panels that we have here in the campus. As for example, a blackout

suddenly happens while classes are going on, staffs and faculty are working, it is then

that the solar panels’ contribution will be visible. The energy contributed by these panels
is directed towards the lights and projectors within the campus which makes people and

students able to continue their works and classes.

According to Zientara, B. (2013), A typical solar panel produces around 320

watts of power, which can become a back-up for electricity which will be enough during

power shortages or when electricity is down. A solar panel infused with sunlight for an

hour can produce up to 250 watts which can power a house’s lightings and some

appliances.

Romero, R. (2015) stated in her article that homes with solar panels may lose

power in the event of a grid outage if they don’t have some backup form of energy

storage, like the batteries. She states that a solar system is designed to sell extra

electricity from your panels to the grid, operated by your local public utility, in order to

defray some costs of your system. It’s the concept known as “net-metering.”

Benefit to the Institution

Money still becomes an issue even for a big institution like Ateneo. Having a

large campus and a huge learner’s and staff population, there will probably be

expensive bills to pay. Several years have passed since the solar panels have been

installed and the school has recovered from the huge expenditure for the installation of

these panels. Now, the institution is benefiting and saving a large sum of money from

the help of the panels, this means that the electricity bills that Ateneo pays is much

cheaper in comparison to the times when there were no solar panels.

As stated by Viki Ingersoll, Energy Manager of the Catholic Diocese schools of

Buffalo in the research of Solar Liberty (n.d.), not only will the installation of solar panels

contribute to the global sustainability, this system also contributes to the institutions as a
support financially for the expenses allotted for electricity. The large flat roof of a school

building is a great place for solar panels. Maximizing the space to generate clean solar

electricity will cut energy costs and the students will have an experience of these solar

panels.

According to the Intermountain Wind Solar (2017), there are three main reason

why schools and universities should go solar. The first one is the school would benefit in

terms of saving money with solar energy systems. It is because energy is costly and

solar power can deliver a huge savings for the school. Most schools can accommodate

a many solar panels because they are spacious. Lastly, solar energy systems offer

educational opportunities to the students. By installing solar panels, schools can be

more advanced in their educational opportunities, helping students develop their steps

towards the STEM subjects.

Economically and Environmentally Significant.

There are many reasons why a certain institution installs solar panels. Some of

these reasons are to lessen the expenses and to have a backup energy stored. Since

the presence of the sun is for free, the panels gather the energy and saves it. The

institution that installs the panels can save more money because they can store energy

for free. The expenditures allotted for electric bills can be saved and spend for other

expenses.

As what Danielson, N. (2013) said, the world’s energy needs to reduce by one

third and individuals needs to work to save energy and rely on the renewable energy.

Renewable energy allows you to tap on the natural resources that are replenished as

part of the normal life cycle. Natural Resources are accessible and it is part of our

ecology. Using these resources could best help to conserve not only the environment,

but also the financial expenses.

As a support to this theme, in the book “Critical Thinking About Environmental

Issues: Energy” by Shaw and Zueger (2004), solar panels help contribute in minimizing

the use of energy. Solar panels can be an alternative with the primary basic producer of

electricity and in that it saves energy as it produces power. Thus, through the use of

these renewables it can help produce electricity to appliances which can save energy by

using less electricity than the usual consumption. Furthermore, solar panels may be

expensive nevertheless it has environmental advantages that can affirm that its price is

worth the product. Moreover, Geller argues that the possible total cost of the energy
producers such as the fossil fuels is much more expensive than the solar panels and

the other renewables.

Convenient

Solar Panels are very accessible to many. It may include expensive materials to

be established and invented, but its function is for a long term. The wirings inside the

panels consists durable materials to be not easily broken. A quality equipment is a good

investment in terms of conserving energy. It would lead the panels to be an essential

facility an institution could ever have.

Debono points out that in every hour, these photons that were converted to

become electricity would satisfy the global electricity needs of people. Debono included

the report from the International Energy Agency stating that solar energy became the

world’s fastest growing source of energy to the point that it exceled more that the fuel

source of power. Solar panels are assembled by numerous numbers of solar cells.

These cells are made of silicon. It has its positive and negative layer for the reason that

it would create an electric field just like how it is on the normal batteries that people

usually see. ( Debono, 2017)

Using solar panels is very convenient since it does not require any labor when

the collection of energy occurs. Energy transformed from sunlight. Light from the sun

may be used to make electricity, to provide heating and cooling for buildings, and to

heat water. Solar energy has been used for thousand of years in other ways as well.

The sun is responsible for nearly all of the energy sources to be found on Earth. All the

coal, oil, and natural gas were produced by decaying plants millions of years ago. In
other words, the primary fossil fuels used today are really stored solar energy. The heat

from the sun also drives the wind, which is another renewable source of energy.

(Lerner, K. & Lerner, B., 2012) (p. 241)

Conservation of Electricity

The world today is inevitably in need of more energy supplies that can satisfy the

needs of the population. They need energy, but they can also save and conserve it for

future uses or emergencies. People around the world should be taught not to waste

energy like electricity for it can cause greater damage than good. The conservation of

energy is important for the people to learn about the importance of what they are just

wasting at the moment.

According to Hunt, V. (1982), solar energy is the solution to the world’s energy

problem as a way for more energy for the future without the danger of having its energy
lifeline cut. He concluded; “We must develop solar energy, adopt conservation, and

expand our other energy supply options in order to reduce our dependence on imported

oil.”

Shaw and Zueger (2004) also supports that solar panels help contribute in

minimizing the use of energy. Solar panels saves energy as it produces power and that

through the use of these renewables it can help produce electricity to appliances which

can save energy by using less electricity than the usual consumption.

People should learn to conserve energy by doing the little things that they can

do; switching off lights, projectors, air conditioners, and everyday appliances that are

costly in using electricity so that little by little we can help in saving the world of its

energy crisis.

Promotion of Solar Panels.

Promoting solar panels could help adhere to the problem that the society has

been facing. Spreading awareness regarding these panels answers the

question/curiosity of the people thus they could be able to know the advantages of

these panels and on how it works.

As what Shead, B. (2017) said, there are great advantages, and potential

business opportunities of solar energy in the Philippines. Philippines was known to be

the highest electricity costs in Asia just like the country of Japan. Due to this

circumstance, the use of solar panel could help adhere to the problem whereas, it can

help conserve electricity. Through the use of solar panels, it will be cheaper and

economically advantageous for the Philippines since it can give a lot of benefits to the

country.  In addition, Philippines consists of 102 million people and is a relatively fast –
growing Asian economy. Therefore, implementing solar panels in the country would be

a great deal thus there will be 7000 MW of power generation will be added over the next

five years.

Vaughan, A. (2018) stated that with the use of solar panels as a source of

electricity in households is beneficial for everyone. It helps conserves energy whereas,

it can also give financial benefits to the people. Reduction of their energy bills is one of

the advantages they could get if they use solar panels as a source of energy.

Unfortunately, solar installations had largely dried out after the incentives were cut of in

the year 2016 hence advocates regarding renewable energy should take place.

Advocates about solar panels can give awareness and contribute for the development

of the community and this signifies that spreading awareness is so efficient in order for

the people to gain knowledge about these types of renewable energy.

Implications on the Research Agenda

This study addresses the needs of the community regarding energy source and

the experiences of the people in times of blackouts or brownouts. The implication of the

study to the research agenda enables the community to adhere to the problem

whereas, solar panels can be used as an alternative energy source in times of

brownouts. Through this, employees/workers can still do there work even when

brownouts happen since solar panels takes place. In addition, solar panels have

advantages and this can adhere to the problem that the majority is facing. Solar panels

can be an alternative for fossil fuels and it can adhere to the problem of pollution.

Furthermore, the goal of the study is to give awareness to the community regarding
solar panels. Solar panels help contribute in conserving energy thus, it can give benefits

and advantages to the community.  Conserving energy can contribute in decreasing the

expenses of the institution and this is one way of developing the other aspects of the

institution that needs development.

Implications on STEM Education

The goal of the study is to promote and acknowledge solar panels on what they

can contribute for a long-term development. Solar panels serve as an alternative energy

source thus it prevents power shortage. In its implications on STEM Education, it gives

knowledge on how solar panels work together to perform and serve its purpose. In

addition, science related subjects would educate the youth/students about solar power

whereas, it discusses studies related to solar power and about renewable energy.

STEM education elaborates the significance of solar power and on how it functions for

the development of the community. Furthermore, solar panels are implied to STEM

education since it is related and it is a course that focuses on sustainability. Sustaining

our environment and emitting factors that can contribute to the destruction of our natural

resources/habitat.

Concluding Remarks

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”

        - Albert

Einstein

Never give up to reach your goals. Completing this research would never have

been possible if we gave up halfway. The entire process of making of this study was
both difficult and never easy. We endured countless, sleepless nights, both

psychological and physical pain and yet, we all felt the determination to finish this

research and we did. As we started our research we never really were sure of how to do

it but with the help of our research adviser and fellow classmates, slowly yet steadily,

we gradually became more experienced and knowledgeable about what we were doing

and how we were going to do it.

In the making of our Chapter I we were still green but we somehow managed to

produce a somewhat good result. Chapter II was the most time-allotting and most

interactive chapter we had. We had to check if the books or links were already taken

and we asked that a lot of times to each other. Some of us brought home the books,

and some spent lots of their time in the library. Although we can say that we produced

great results in the end except for the fact that we forgot our synthesis. Chapter III was

fairly manageable, nevertheless it was still hard, but it was surprising that we finished it

without any cramming or late-night meetings. The interview was really hard to

accomplish too because we had to interview teachers, and most of them had really tight

schedules so we were the ones who really adjusted to it. The making of our Chapter IV

and V was the most challenging because we started late, and some were also sick, so

we really crammed until the deadline.

Nevertheless, it was worth it seeing our completed study as it displays our hard

work and determination. All of this is thanks to each and everyone’s contribution of time,

energy, participation, and effort to our research. Now we are ready to embark on a new

journey, while also reminded of the time that we made this.
