Research Colloquium 2024 (Methodology Draft)
Research Colloquium 2024 (Methodology Draft)
I. Goals
● Develop a comprehensive understanding of the components and structure of a research study methodology in the IMRaD
format.
● Enhance skills in writing a clear, concise, and informative methodology.
● Effectively communicate the Research Design, Sample/Population of the Study, Materials and Instruments, Data Collection,
Data Analysis, and Ethical Considerations of the research.
● Develop proficiency in using appropriate language and style for academic writing.
II. Role
● You are a researcher in the Accountancy, Business, and Management/Technical Vocational field who is tasked with crafting a
compelling methodology for a research study.
III. Audience
You are researchers from the Accountancy, Business, and Management/Technical Vocational fields, eager to contribute to the
academic community. You must conduct a QUALITATIVE research study on a relevant topic within your field of Accountancy, Business,
and Management/Technical Vocational. To showcase your research findings and enhance your academic portfolio, you will be
presenting your work at the upcoming Research Colloquium 2024. During the colloquium, you will have an open and dynamic
discourse with other researchers.
Before you present your research proposal during the colloquium, you must craft a draft of your research methodology. Research
methodology is essential as it provides a systematic and structured approach to conducting research, ensuring the validity, reliability,
and credibility of the findings. It promotes transparency, objectivity, and adherence to ethical standards, guiding researchers in choosing
appropriate designs, sampling methods, and analytical tools. By minimizing biases and errors, it enhances the trustworthiness of the
study and contributes to the body of knowledge, aiding in informed decision-making and problem-solving. To make a strong impression,
your methodology should be approximately 1,000 words.
i. Member Contribution
Each member will be assigned to a particular part of your methodology assigned by the leader. All members shall be rated
by the leader, while the leader shall be rated by the sub-leader.
ii. Submission
a. When submitting your output, submit your hardcopy to your teacher inside a folder:
ABM-YELLOW LONG FOLDER
TVL-ORANGE LONG FOLDER
b. Contents of the folder are your methodology draft, rubrics, and member’s rating.
c. Attach your softcopy to your GCR on the same day as your hardcopy deadline.

METHODOLOGY
This study will employ a qualitative research design. A qualitative research design is used to gain a richly detailed
understanding of a particular topic, issue, or meaning based on first-hand experience. It is concerned with answering the
whys and hows of the phenomenon (DJS Research, 2024). A qualitative design is ideal for studying Grade 11 ABM
students at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College as it allows for an in-depth exploration of their unique experiences and
perspectives on how social media influences their financial literacy. At this critical educational stage, students are forming
key financial habits and attitudes. Using methods like focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, the study can
capture the ways these students interact with financial information on social media, revealing their motivations, contexts,
challenges, and perceived benefits. The researchers will use the phenomenological approach to gain an in-depth
understanding of the lived experiences and perspectives of students regarding the influence of social media on their
financial literacy. Phenomenology, as advocated by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, focuses on exploring the
essence of phenomena through participants’ subjective interpretations and meanings.
The study population comprises all 91 Grade 11 ABM students enrolled at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College
(Puerto Campus) during the 2024-2025 academic year. From the 91 respondents, the researchers shall identify the
participants who are validated to provide significant and rich data to address the research problem. A purposive sampling
strategy, as recommended by Patton (2002), will be employed to select participants who can provide rich and diverse
perspectives on the research topic. Inclusion criteria include being a currently enrolled Grade 11 ABM student at
PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College (Puerto Campus), active social media users, and willing to participate in the study and
share their experiences. This approach ensures that the study captures a comprehensive range of experiences and
perspectives from the participants.
The primary data collection methods will include Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews.
FGDs will be conducted with groups of 5-7 students to facilitate open discussions and encourage participants to share
their experiences and perspectives in a comfortable setting. The discussions will be guided by a semi-structured interview
guide, focusing on key themes related to social media usage, financial literacy, and the perceived influence of social media
on financial knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Krueger and Casey (2000) highlight the effectiveness of FGDs in
generating rich qualitative data through group interactions. Additionally, individual interviews will be conducted with
selected participants to explore their experiences and perspectives in more depth. These semi-structured interviews, as
emphasized by Kvale (1996), allow for flexibility and probing while ensuring that key themes and topics are covered.
The materials and instruments for data collection will include a semi-structured interview guide, which contains
open-ended questions designed to facilitate focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews, ensuring that key
themes are covered while allowing for flexibility. Audio recorders will be used to capture FGDs and interviews accurately
for transcription and analysis. Transcription software will assist in transcribing audio recordings verbatim. Additionally,
computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), such as NVivo or ATLAS.ti, will be utilized to facilitate
The collected data from FGDs and interviews will be transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis.
This process involves identifying, coding, and categorizing patterns and themes in the data to develop a comprehensive
understanding of the participants’ experiences and perspectives. Braun and Clarke (2006) provide a detailed framework
for conducting thematic analysis in qualitative research. The analysis will be conducted using a combination of manual
coding and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) to facilitate data organization and
management.
The study will adhere to ethical guidelines to protect the rights and well-being of the participants. Informed
consent, as stressed by Diener and Crandall (1978), will be obtained from all participants before their involvement in the
study. Confidentiality and anonymity will be maintained throughout the research process, following the ethical
considerations discussed by Sieber (1992). Participants will be informed of their right to withdraw from the study at any
time without penalty. The study will seek ethical approval from the relevant institutional review board before data
collection begins. The research findings will be reported objectively and transparently, and any potential conflicts of
interest will be disclosed.
