Exam 1 Topics:

ˆ Finding the solution of differential equations; Integrals as General and Particular Solutions,
Separable equations, and Linear first order equations.

ˆ Equilibrium solutions and stability.

ˆ Application problems will be chosen among natural growth/decay, cooling/heating, popu-

lation models, acceleration-velocity models.

Exam 1 Review Problems:

1. Find ALL solutions of each of the following problems. In each case, if possible, give explicit
solutions.
dy
(a) y 2 = (y 3 + 1) cos t
dt
dy 3 ex
(b) + y = 3 , y(1) = 1.
dx x x
dy x
(c) =√ , y(0) = 1.
dx 2
x +1
dy
(d) ex = −x(y 2 + 1)
dx
(e) (1 + t2 )y ′ = (1 + t2 )−2 − 4ty
dy
(f) = 2xy 2 + 3x2 y 2 , y(1) = −1
dx
2. The corpse of a victim was found at midnight with a body temperature of 30◦ C in a room
with a constant ambient temperature of 25◦ C. Six minutes later, the temperature of the
body had fallen to 29◦ C. If a normal body temperature is 37◦ C, when did the victim die?
dT
Assume that Newton’s law of cooling holds, i.e., = k(A − T ), where k > 0 and A is the
dt
temperature of the surrounding medium.

3. In a certain culture of bacteria, the number of bacteria increased tenfold in 5 hours. How
long did it take the population to double? Assume that the population function P obeys
the following differential equation
dP
= kP
dt
4. The time rate of change of a fish population in a lake is proportional to the square of P .
The lake contained 12 fish in 2012 and the number of fish doubled in 2022. When will there
be 48 fish in the lake? What happens to the fish population as it gets closer to 2032?

5. Let = x2 (4 − x). Find the equilibrium solutions, show the phase diagram, and state
dt
whether each of the equilibrium solutions is stable or not. Sketch a representative collection
of solution curves.
6. Consider the initial value problem
dx
= −x2 + 2x − 1, x(0) = x0 > 1
dt
Solve this equation and determine how the solution behaves as t → ∞. Find the critical
point of this differential equation and determine if it is stable, unstable or neither (also
called semi-stable).

7. A baseball is thrown straight downward with an initial speed of 48 ft/s from the top of a
building 640 ft high. How long does it take to reach the ground, and with what speed does
the baseball strike the ground? Assume that there is no air resistance. (The gravitational
acceleration is 32 ft/s2 .)

8. A bolt is shot straight upward with an initial speed of 49 m/s from the top of a building
10 m high. How long does it take to reach the ground, and with what speed does it strike
the ground? Assume linear air resistance with drag coefficient ρ = 0.04 (The gravitational
acceleration is 9.8 m/s2 .)
