CONTENT DISCUSSION:

The Seven Sacraments

CFC 1521 Taken as symbolic acts, sacraments are
performative word events – like Jesus’s own ministry and deeds-
real happenings that make present the spiritual reality they
express.

2
CFC 1581 A Sacramental celebration is an encounter of
God’s adopted sons and daughters with their father through Christ
in the spirit, expressed as a dialogue, through actions and words.
The seven sacraments are
1. Baptism 4. Penance 7. Holy
Orders
2. Confirmation 5. Anointing of the sick
3. Eucharist 6. Marriage
The seven sacraments are divided into three categories.
1. Sacraments of Initiation
- Baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist are the sacraments
of Christian Initiation.
2. Sacraments of Healing
- Penance or reconciliation and anointing of the sick are
sacraments of healing.
3. Sacraments of Service
- Holy orders and matrimony or marriage are the
sacraments of service to others.
TOUCHING HEARTS

1. The sacrament of the church makes us holy.

One of the ways for us to become holy is to receive the
sacraments of the church. Each sacrament gives sanctifying
grace that helps us to be like Jesus in his words and actions.
2. The sacraments give us the opportunity to worship
and glorify God.
We adore and glorify God in the celebration of the
sacraments. God is the reason and the focus of celebrating
the love, joy, and hope of being his children.

3. The sacraments build up the church.

It is through the sacraments that people came together to
witness and share the faith with fellow believers. This kind of
gathering strengthens the bond and unity of the members of
the church.

CONTENT DISCUSSION:

Institution of the Eucharist

It was the Last Supper with his apostles that Jesus started the
Eucharist. Our Lord Jesus used the ordinary element of a meal to
show his desire to be with each one of us.

6
Jesus wants us to be united with him. Thus, the Eucharist
becomes the point of unity among Christians of today.
Read the Gospel of Mark to know how Jesus instituted the
Eucharist.

Mark 14:17-25 When it

was evening, Jesus arrived
with the twelve apostles.
While they were eating at
the table, Jesus said, “Truly I
say to you, one of you will
betray me, one who shares
my meal.” They were deeply
distressed at hearing this.
While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed and
broke it, and gave to them. Take this, he said, “This is my body.”
Then he took the cup and after he had given thanks passed it to
them and they all drank from it. And he said, “This is my blood,
the blood of the covenant which is to be poured out to many.
Truly I say to you. I will not taste the fruit of the vine again until
the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.”
CFC 1748: Christ used the natural elements of a meal – coming
together, conversing, and sharing food and drink together – to
bring his loving presence among us.
What is the meaning of bread and wine in the Eucharist?
 The bread symbolizes body of Christ.
 The wine reminds us Jesus blood that He shed for us on the
cross.
TOUCHING HEARTS
1. We remember the sacrifice of Jesus’s life in the
Eucharist.
- In the celebration of the Eucharist, we remember what
Jesus did in order for all of us to be saved from our sins. He
sacrificed himself on the cross to show his love to all
mankind.
2. We recite the highest form of prayer in celebrating
Mass.
- Whenever we attend Mass, we say the highest form of
prayer.
- It is considered as the highest form because of the
following:
 The word of God exists.
 The community is present.
 The priest leads in the celebration in the name of
Jesus.
 We receive Jesus himself in the communion.

7
Jesus wants us to be united and remember his loving
presence through the Eucharist. Let us show our
appreciation by attending the celebration of the Mass.

Liturgy of the Word

Jesus continues to communicate his message to us. In the
celebration of Mass, Jesus gives his message through the Liturgy
of the Word. It is the first part of the celebration of Mass where
the people listen to the reading of God’s word.
1. The first reading is taken form the Old Testament.
2. The second reading is chosen from the New Testament.

13
3. The responsorial psalm links the readings in the Mass. It is
sung or recited prayerfully.
4. The Gospel is read by the priest. It is taken from any of the
four Gospels of Mathew, mark, Luke, and John. They were the
four evangelists.
5. The homily is the explanation of the readings for the day.
The priest relates it to the everyday life in the community.
Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) For the word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to
dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart.

TOUCHING HEARTS:
1. God’s word guides us in leading a Christian life.
2. God’s word lightens our burden in life.
3. God’s word gives us peace of mind.
Let us read about a woman who listened to God and showed
courage in fighting the enemies. She is the patroness of soldiers.
St. Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc came from a family of peasants
who lived in the small village called Domremy,
near the province of Lorraine in France. As a
young child, she heard the voices of three saints;
namely, St. Margaret, St. Catherine, and St.
Michael, who gave her personal messages.
One day, she received a message telling her
to go to the king and assist him in recovering the lost kingdom.
The king believed in her, and she was given a small army to fight
the enemies. She became successful in her military career until
one day, she was captured by the enemies. She was accused of
sorcery and heresy. Then she was imprisoned, tried in a court, and
was sentenced to death.
On May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake. After 30
years, she was proven innocent of the accusations against her. In
1920, she was declared a saint.

said to them, “Let the man among you who has no sin be the first
to throw the stone at her.” And he bent down again and wrote on
the ground.
As a result of these words, they went away, one by one,
starting with the oldest until Jesus was the only one left with the

The Sacrament of Penance
In the sacrament of penance, we ask God’s forgiveness of
sins we have committed. One should take note of the following to
have a good confession.
1. Accepting one’s sins before God is important.
2. One should confess all serious sins to the priest who is acting
in the person of Christ.
17
3. Penance is something that a sinner does or is tasked to do in
order to correct his/her mistakes and to prove that he/she
regrets his/her wrongdoings.
4. God expresses his desire to forgive us through absolution
given by the priest.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
TOUCHING HEARTS:
1. We are all sinners
- We should accept that all people are sinners and in need
of God’s forgiveness. This is the first step to show that we
are sincere in our intention of coming back to the loving
arms of God the Father.
2. We are called to forgive others
- We receive the forgiveness of God through the sacrament
of penance. Since we are forgiven by God, we are also
asked to forgive those who sinned against us.
3. We are invited to receive God’s forgiveness in the
sacrament of penance.
- CCC 1422 “Those who approach the sacrament of
penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offence
committed against him, and are, ate the same time,
reconciled with the church which they have wounded by
their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer

CONTENT DISCUSSION:

Anointing is healing in a special sense. It brings Christ’s

compassionate loving healing to those suffering from serious
illnesses.
By healing, we do not necessarily mean a cure of the
complete removal of the disease or defect, which the medical
profession pursues. While some diseases and evils may be
incurable in the medical sense, there can be healing by holistic
care that touches the body, soul, and spirit of the sick person.
Healing, then, means the process by which persons are helped to
realize their full potential before God and their fellow men and

Jesus Cures the Leper
Mathew 8:1-4 When Jesus came down from the mountain,
large crowd followed him. Then the leper came forward. He
greeted him respectfully and said, “Sir if you will, you can make
me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hands, touched him and said, “I
20
am willing; be cleansed“. At that very moment, a man was
cleansed from his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “Take care, do
not tell anyone, but go to the priest, have yourself declared clean,
and offer gift that Moses ordered as a proof of it.”
Psalm 41:3 (NIV) The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and
restores them from their bed of illness.
