THE CHURCH IS HOLY

A. Background Information for Learners

The Nicene Creed was written centuries ago to help Christians remember the
important beliefs of the faith. In the Nicene Creed, we identify the four marks of the
Church. The four marks of the Church are not characteristics that the Church creates or
develops or learns. They are qualities that Jesus Christ shares with his Church through the
Holy Spirit. The four marks of the Church are that it is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

Today, you will learn about the second mark of the

Church, the Church is Holy. The Church is One because God is
holy. Through baptism, we share in the new life and holiness of
Jesus. We are all called to holiness. Our good deeds at home,
in school, and in the community are considered acts of holiness.
Please follow the given instructions for better understanding.

We ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother,

and say one Hail Mary to begin the lesson.

Now that you are done with the prayer, kindly get your Celebrating
the Catholic Faith Book and open it on page 12 and read the story
“Holiness Made Simple”. 1
After reading the story, kindly answer Exercise B on
page 14 of your book.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
a. Holiness pleases God because He is holy.
b. We can be holy in different ways. Our good deeds at home, in
school, and in the community are considered acts of holiness.

Now, proceed to page 15 and read the Christian Acts of Holiness and do the
activity on page 16.

WE BELIVE
The CHURCH is Holy. This is the second mark of the Church. The
Church is holy because God is holy and He wants us to be holy. The early
Christians shoed holiness by sharing what they had with those in need.

Through baptism we become members of the Church. We share in

the new life and holiness of Jesus. We grow in holiness through the help
and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

REMEMBER:
•Jesus showed holiness while He was on earth: He did not sin. He
gave His life to redeem people from their sins. He showed unconditional
love, mercy, and forgiveness to anyone who sought Him.
•As the head of the Church, Jesus leads us in living a life of holiness.
The early Christians followed His example. They helped the needy in any
way they could.
