Question 1
(ii) With aid of an energy-level diagram, indicate qualitatively how the energy levels of the d-
orbitals are altered as a result of varying degrees of interaction of d-electrons and ligand
electrons in an octahedral complex [ML6]n+ where is L = ligand.
(iii) Show which d-orbitals occur at which energy levels and how the orbitals will be occupied
by electrons for each of the following electron configurations: d1, d2 and d3.
Question 2
A nickel complex ion is found to have and effective magnetic moment of 2.83 BM.
(a) How many unpaired electrons are present on the Ni2+?
(c) Determine the magnetic susceptibility that you would expect to measure for this
complex ion at 273 K and 100 K.
Question 3
(ii) Write the d-electron configuration and determine the CFSE or the central metal ion and the
magnetism of each of the following complexes:
(a) [Cr(H2O)6]3+
(b) [Cu(H2O)6]2+
(c) [TiF6]3-

Question 4
(i) Copper(II) sulphate solution looks pale blue because when light shines through it, some
frequencies of white light are absorbed. What colour does copper(II) sulphate solution absorb?
(ii) When you add an excess of ammonia solution to copper(II)sulphate solution, the colour
changes to a very deep blue as the tetraamminediaquacopper(II) ion is formed. What colour is
the solution now absorbing from white light?
(iii) Explain why ions of Sc3+ and Zn2+ ions form colourless solutions.
Question 5
The magnitude of o for CrL6 (Cr3+) complexes is 26,310 (L = CN-), 15,250 (L = H2O) and
9,620 (L = I) cm-1.
(i) Explain the relative order in terms of the ligand bonding properties.
Question 6
Predict the number of unpaired electrons, the spin‐only magnetic moments at 25 oC for
2
a) [Fe(CN)6]4‐
b) [Ru(NH3)6]3+
c) [Cr(NH3)6]2+
Question 7
Question 8
Determine the electron configuration in terms of t2g . eg or t2 .e2 as appropriate, the number of
unpaired electron(s), spin only magnetic moment and Crystal Field Stabilization Energy
(CFSE) both in terms of Δ for each of the following complexes.
(a)[Co(NH3)6]3+
(b) [Fe(OH2)6]2+
(c) [Fe(CN)6]3–
(d) [Cr(NH3)6]3+
