SECTION D
The following questions are case-based questions. Read the case carefully and answer the
questions that follow:
29. The oxidation number of the central atom in a complex is defined as the charge it would
carry if all the ligands are removed along with the electron pairs that are shared with the
central atom. Similarly the charge on the complex is the sum of the charges of the
constituent parts i.e. the sum of the charges on the central metal ion and its surrounding
ligands. Based on this, the complex is called neutral if the sum of the charges of the
constituents is equal to zero. However, for an anion or cationic complex, the sum of the
charges of the constituents is equal to the charge on the coordination sphere.
Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
(a) What is the secondary valence of Co in [Co (NH3)4 Cl2]+. 1
(b) What type of isomerism is shown by the complex
[ Cr( H2O)6] Cl3 and [ Cr( H2O)5 Cl] Cl2. H2O? 1

(ii) Delta_{0} > P. OR 2
(c) Find the coordination number and oxidation state of chromium in Na 3, [Cr(C₂O4)3]. 2
30. The rate of reaction is concerned with decrease in concentration of reactants or
increase in the concentration of products per unit time. It can be expressed as
instantaneous rate at a particular instant of time and average rate over a large interval of
time. A number of factors such as temperature, concentration of reactants, catalyst affect
the rate of reaction. Mathematical representation of rate of a reaction is given by rate law:
Rate = k [A]x [ B]Y
x and y indicate how sensitive the rate is to change in concentration of A and B. Sum of x + y
gives the overall order of a reaction.
When a sequence of elementary reaction gives us the products, the reaction are called
complex reaction. Molecularity and order of an elementary reaction are same. Zero order
reaction are relatively uncommon but they occur under special condition. All natural and
artificial radioactive decay of unstable nuclei take place by first order kinetics.
1. What is the effect of temperature on the rate constant of a reactions? 1
