TUTORIAL SET #4

Question 1
Using the soil profile on Figure Q1 determine the flow into the lake in m3/hour from clay layer
per m2 of lake bed.

10m Lake

Clay
10m
k = 10-6cm/s

Sand
10m with artesian pressures where
the piezometric surface is
10m above surface of the lake

Question 2
During a constant head permeability test on a sand sample, 260ml of water was collected in 2
minutes. If the sample had a length of 100mm, a diameter of 40mm and maintained a head of
200mm, what is the permeability in m/s? Use diagrams to represent the given data and show your
calculations.

Question 3
(a) A falling head permeability test was performed on a sample of silty sand. The initial hydraulic
head was 900mm, the final head was 400mm, and 60 seconds were required for the water level in
the standpipe to fall. The cross-sectional area of the standpipe was 100mm2.The sample was of
40mm diameter, and had a length of 180mm. Determine the permeability in m/s. Use diagrams to
represent the given data and show your calculations.
(b) In a variable head permeability test, head causing flow was initially 50cm and it dropped 2cm
in 5 minutes. How much time is required for the head to fall to 25cm?
(c) We desire to subject our sample which is 8cm in diameter and 10cm high to a falling head
permeability test. Our guess of the permeability of the sample based on empirical approximations
is 10x10-4cm/s. If we want the head in the standpipe to fall from 24cm to 12cm in 3 minutes,
determine the size of the standpipe which we should use.

Question 4

A three-layered soil system consisting of fine sand, coarse silt and fine silt in horizontal
layers is shown in Figure Q4. Beneath the fine silt layer there is a stratum of water bearing
gravel with a water pressure of 155 kN/m2. The surface of the sand is flooded with water
to a depth of 1 m.
(a) Calculate the equivalent coefficient of permeability across bedding planes, kv
(b) Calculate the equivalent coefficient of permeability along bedding planes, kH.
(c) Determine the quantity of flow per unit area in mm3/sec.

Question 5

For the permeameter shown below, Soil 1 has permeability of k=5x10-6m/s and soil 2 has
2x10-7m/s
(a) Calculate pressure head, elevation head, total head and head loss at points A, B and C.
(b) Indicate by means of standpipes the piezometric levels to which water will rise in respective
standpipes if the tips of the piezometers are located at points A, B and C.
