SUBTRACTION OF 2-TO 3-DIGIT NUMBERS WITHOUT OR WITH REGROUPING

Minued-is the number from which anther number is subtracted. (upper number)
Subtrahend-is the number subtracted or taken away. (lower number)
Difference- is the answer in subtraction.

Comparing subtraction with addition

We can check our answer in subtraction by using addition. This is because
addition undoes subtraction are inverse operation.

Word Problem:

Mr. Gabriel has 46 pupils in his art class. Out of this number, 14 are girls. How
many are boys?

Subtraction with regrouping

All the 545 scouts in Bambang Central school went camping. Among them were
grade 228 grade 1. How many grade 2 were there?

3. What is the number sentence – 545-228=N

Strategies in subtracting mentally

1. Subtract in two parts


Example:
64-7
Subtract 7 in two parts: first 4,then 3.
64-7
=64 -4-3
=64 -4 (first 4) Answer =60
Answer=60-3 (then 3)
=57

2. Subtract in parts: tens and ones


Break the second number into its tens and ones.
Example:
86-32
Break 32 in two parts (expanded operation)
86- 30- 2
First subtract by tens (30), then subtract by ones (2)
86-30 (first 30) Answer=56
Answer=56 -2
=54

3. Add
You can add backwards. This works if the two numbers are close to each
other.
Example:
82-78
Think: 78+___=82
78+ 4 = 82
82-78=4

4. Add up to find the difference


To find the difference, start at the smaller number,and add up until you
get the bigger number.
Example:
95-48
Think: 48+_____=50 (what number should be added to make 48 a
whole number?)
48+2 = 50
50 + ____=90 (what number should be added to make
the 50 becomes the closest whole number)
50 + 40 = 90
90 +__ = 95
90 +5 = 95
Therefore:
2, 40 and 5 is a total of 47.
95-48= 47
