Session 1
Meeting the challenge of Human survival on Earth
Preamble
Content
• The Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other
organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to form a
bubble of life. https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/ecosystem/
• The environmental crisis
Refers to the fact that we as human beings are destroying planet earth
progressively.
• Industrial development
• Degradation
• Deforestation
• Agricultural and industrial revolutions
• Sustainable living
What do you
think?
What are the environmental problems we
have now that our forefathers didn’t have
and what contributed to these
environmental problems?
The main problems
facing planet earth
right now
• Population
• Natural resource depletion
• Climate Change
• Ultraviolet light
• Species facing extinction
• Shrinking Forests
• Water Problems
• Soil erosion
Predictions of the standards of living from Miller 1994
What do you think?
Characteristics of a system:
• it exhibits a structure
• It imply some sort of functioning- a flow of matter or energy is represented
• It implies the presence of some kind of motive power;
• Linkages do not only occur between internal units but also between
contiguous systems
Types of systems
Energy/ Thermodynamic system has schematic representations of the energy system:
• Isolated System:
-No interaction between the system and the surroundings
-They do not exist in real life
-Only exist for research purposes in laboratories for instance
• Closed system:
-Matter is not exchanged with the environment but energy may flow through the system
-rare
-examples are light bulb, a watch, the earth
• Open system:
-Energy and matter flow freely between systems.
-There are systems in a system
-Flow is in the system and out of the system
-It is not independent
