PART A

Answer all questions. Each question carries seven marks

III Draw the BM & SF Diagram of a simply supported beam AB having M1.02 U
8m length carries a UDL of 16kN/m over the entire span and a point
load of 24kN, 2m from the left support A.

OR

IV A 50mm x 100mm in depth rectangular section of a beam is simply M1.04 U


supported at the ends with 2m span. The beam is loaded with 20kN
point load at 0.5m from R.H.S Calculate the maximum shearing stress
in the beam.
V A mild steel column is built up of an RSJ 100mm x 150mm with one plate M2.02 U
120mm x 12mm riveted to each flange. If the length of the column is 5m
with one end fixed and other end hinged calculate the safe axial load by
Rankine's formula using a factor of safety 3.0.

Ixx = 839.1 x 104 mm4 Iyy = 94.8 x 104mm4
A= 2167 mm2 Rankine’s Constant, a = 1/7500
Fc = 320N/mm2

OR
VI A trapezoidal masonry dam is of 18m height. The dam is having water M2.05 A
up to a depth of 15m on its vertical side. The top & bottom width of
the dam are 4m & 8m respectively. The weight density of the
masonry is given as 19.62 kN/m3. Determine
(i) The resultant force on the dam
(ii) The point where the resultant cut the base
(iii) Max & Min stress intensities at the base

VII Find the maximum deflection of cantilever beam having length 6m, M3.01 A
carries a UDL of 5kN/m throughout the span & point load of 15kN at
the free end. E = 2x105 N/mm2, size of the beam is 200 x 400mm.
OR

VIII Draw the BM & SF for a fixed beam of length 5m with a UDL of M3.04 U
intensity 10kN/m on the entire span & a point load of 30kN at the
center.
IX A continuous beam has two spans AB=6m, BC = 8m, all supports are M4.02 U
simply supported. The loading on the span is 60kN/m on AB, 50kN/m
on BC. If EI is constant find the fixed end moments and draw the B.M
diagrams. Use three moment theorem.
OR

X Draw the BM diagram of beam ABC by Moment distribution method M4.03 U


(EI Constant).

XI A rectangular beam of 200mm wide & 300 deep is simply supported M1.04 A
on a span of 8m, what uniformly distributed load per meter, the beam
may carry, if the bending stress not exceeds 120N/mm2
OR

XII A column of timber beam section 15cm x 20cm is 6m long both ends M2.02 U
being fixed. If the Young’s modulus for timber = 17.5Kn/mm2.
Determine.
(i) Crippling load
(ii) Safe load for the column if factor of safety = 3
XIII Calculate the slope and deflection of simply supported beam of M3.02 U
length L with uniformly distributed load, w/m over the entire span
using moment area method.

OR
XIV Write short note on portal frame. M4.04 R
