TRANSMISSION MEDIA
❖ It is a commercial media that will communicate channels that carrys into
form source to destination.
❖ Main function of transmission media to carry the into in the form of bit
and connects through network.
❖ It is a physical part between Transmission media and data
communication.
❖ In OSI physical model/layer Transmission media supports the entire
application in the network.
❖ In this OSI models this transmission media avalilable in the latest level of
osi reference model i.e., physical layer.
❖ The tranformation media basically classified into two ways they are:
1. Guided transmission media
TRANSMISSION
MEDIA
FORMATE
GUIDED MEDIA
➢ Guided media is like a physical medium via which the signal are transmitted
➢ It is also called as wire or bounds transmission media
➢ Here the signals are being transmitted
➢ Example of guided media includes
1. telephone lines
2. twisted pair cables
3. coaxial cables
4. fiber optic cables
5. power lines
➢ Three major types of guided media they are:
A)co-axial cable
B)fiber-optic cable
C) twisted pair cable
Guided
media
A) co-axial cable
• Co-axial cable is an electronic cable with a copper with a copper
conductor and an insulator shielding around it.
• The co-axial cable is also known as 'COAX'.
• The core copper conductor is used for the transmission of signals.
• Insulator is used to provide insulation to the copper conductor.
• Insulator is surrounded by a braided metal conductor .
• This entire setup is again covered with a protective plastic layer to
provide extra safety to the cable.
• The co axial cable transmit information in two models as
1) Base brand mode
2) Broad brand mode

FIBER OPTIC CABLE
➢If transfer data signals in the form of light and travel hundred of miles
significantly faster than those used in traditional electric cable .
➢It is a cable that holds the optical fiber coated in plastic.
➢Data send by pulses of light.
➢The core is surrounded by a less glass or plastic or plastic covering
called cladding.
➢The cable can be bidirectional or undirectional.
➢Bi-directional means – Bi refer to 'two' the actual flow of network traffic
between two devices as they send and receive data at a time.
➢Unidirectional operating or moving in one direction only.
ADVANTAGES
oLight weight & thin
oHigh level security
oIncreased capacity & band width
oResistant to signals
DISADVANTAGES
o High cost
oDifficult to install & band width

oUsed in
o Long distance & high performance data networking. Mostly used
in telecommunication services such as
-> internet
-> televission(TV)
-> telephones

TWISTED PAIR CABLE
➢A twisted pair cable is a cable made by intertwining two separate
insulated wires.
➢This cable used for data and voice transmission.
➢The wires are twisted to reduce physical interference and noise.
➢There are two types of twisted pair cables;
1) shielded cable
2) unshielded cable
➢ Shielded cable has a wire mesh around the wires to protect the
signal, while an unshielded cable does not.
TWISTED
PAIR CABLE
UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR
➢Unshielded twisted pair consist of 2 insulated copper wires where
are twisted around one another one another.
➢This type of has the ability to block interference & does
not depend on a physical shield for this purpose.
➢ It is used for telephonic applications.
ADVANTAGES
oEasy to install
oHigh speed capacity
oShort distance transmission due to animation
Unshielded
twisted pair
SHIELDED TWISTED PAIR
➢ The word unshielded refers to the lack of metallic shielding
around the copper wires.
➢By its nature, the twisted pair design helps minimize
electronic interference by providing balance signal transmission.
➢This type of cable consist of a special jacket to
block external interfence.
➢It is used in fast data rate.
➢In a shielded twisted pair the wires are enclosed in a shield.
ADVANTAGES
oBetter performance of higher data rate in comparision to UTP.
oEliminate cross talk
o Comparitively fast talk
oDifficult to install & manufacture
oMore expensive

UNGUIDED MEDIA
➢ It is also referred as wireless or unbounded transmission media.
➢Here we no need any physical media is required for transmission of
the electromagnetic signals.
➢The main media is "air" it flows the waves easily.
➢ Features
1) the signal is broad casted through air
2) less secure
3) used for longer distances
There are 3 types of signals transmitted through unguided media
i. Radio waves
ii. Micro waves
iii. Infrared waves
UNGUIDED
MEDIA
RADIO WAVES
➢Radio waves are easy to generate (or) easy in sending & receiving
➢Those waves are useful to transmit information between your
devices and a router through frequencies.
➢ Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation with the
lowest frequencies and the longest wavelengths.
➢ Radio waves are generated artificially by
an electronic device called a "transmitter".
RADIO
WAVES
MICRO WAVES
➢ Electro magnetic waves above 100MHS to travel in a straight line
& signals sent by beaming.
➢ It travels in a straight line
➢ Microwaves are undirectional
➢ Short distance, long distance, attervation are characteristics
ADVANTAGES
• This transmission is cheaper than using cables
• Communications over ocean can also be achieved.
MICROWAVES
INFRARED WAVES
➢It is used for very short distance communication.
➢ They can be interface between systems frequency
range is 300GH2- 400TH2
➢ It is used in T.V remotes, wireless mouse, keyboard, printer etc.,
➢ In networking wired and wireless operations use infrared light.
➢Computer can transfer files and other digital data bidirectional.

CONCLUSION
1) Medical Purpose: Used in several types of medical
2)instruments. Defence Purpose: Used in transmission of data
in aerospace.
3) For Communication: This is largely used in formation of
internet cables.
4) Industrial Purpose: Used for lighting purposes and safety
measures in designing the interior and exterior of automobiles.
