INTRODUCTION:
Nursing has a fascinating history that parallels the history of human kind. For, as long as there has been life,
so has there been the need to seek care and comfort from illness and injury. "From the dawn of civilization,
evidence prevails to support the premise, that nurturing has been essential to the preservation of life.
Survival of the human race, therefore, is inextricably intertwined with the development of nursing". The
nursing has been called the oldest of the arts and youngest of the professions". The word 'nurse' evolved
from the Latin word nutritious which means "nourishing". The roots of medicine and nursing are intertwined
and found in mythology, ancient cultures, religion and reasoned thinking. In looking at the historical
development of nursing as a profession, time to time socio-cultural changes have shaped the
profession of nursing.
Nursing is a discipline, a career, rich in opportunities and variety. Entering the nursing profession gives one
an enormous home, hospitals, nursing homes, industries, doctors’ offices, health centres, private practices,
schools, colleges, universities, government agencies, professional associations and insurance companies, etc.
Education for nurses is as varied as working settings, certificate courses like ANM and LHV courses,
diploma course like GNM course and degree courses or baccalaureate courses like B.Sc. nursing, both basic
degree of 4 years and post-certificate or post-basic degree of 2 years, the master's courses like MN, MSc(N),
M Phil and also PhD degree. Like this in nursing education, many courses are available from certificate to
diploma and diploma to degree and also degree to master and doctoral degrees. There will be opportunities
for most nurses to stay in nursing and change jobs several times over the course of their professional career,
as challenged by their jobs. For example, many staff nurses return to school or college to get advanced
degrees and more knowledge that will help them make the needed reforms and their work settings. Many
nurses who intend to go on for advanced degrees become specialized in clinical areas of practice
as opted by them.

PHILOSOPHY-
The word derived from two Greek words. Philo" (love), Sophia" (wisdom). Means love of wisdom Question
of philosophical enquiry, What is life, What is man, What is man’s origin, What is man’s destiny.
Philosophers try to answer these questions according to their own mature reflection and thinking and these
different answer lead to different philosophies.
 DEFINITIONS OF PHILOSOPHY
 Philosophy is science of science -Coleridge
 Philosophy is search for a comprehensive view of nature, an attempt at universal explanation of
nature of thing -Henderson
 philosophy is science knowledge -fitch

 PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
Philosophy of education may be define as Application of fundamental principle of philosophy of life to the
work of education. philosophy of education offers a definite set of principles and establishes a definite set of
aims and objectives. It offers criteria for intelligent interpretation of educational end and means.

 NEED FOR PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION


 Philosophy give direction to education by certain guideline
 By Philosophy of education that the school, officials, teachers and even parents are coordinate their
efforts towards achieving an aim and without philosophy of education all over prove useless or not
fruitful
 It attempts to establish coherent meaning within the whole domain of thought
AIMS OF EDUCATION-
Education should aim at imparting knowledge, skill, and information to the pupils in order to make them
self-reliant; not to be a drag or parasite upon others. As such, vocational bias in education is absolutely
necessary for enabling pupils to be productive members in the society.

 PURPOSES OF AIMS OF EDUCATION


 To help students understand and appreciate themselves as unique individuals who accept complete
responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
 To educate the whole person, not just the mind, since feeling is not divorced from reason in decision
making.
 To help the learner become fully his authentic self.

 TYPES OF AIMS OF EDUCATION


General aims, Specific aims

 Spiritual
 Cultural
 Moral

VOCATIONAL AIM
In the present context of modern era and the achievements in science & technology it is true that education
is worth in terms of its utility.
AIMS OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
 Enable self dependency.
 Ensure hope for learners with low intelligence.

CULTURAL AIM
Culture is cultivation of knowledge, beliefs, are, morals, laws, customs, capabilities and habits.
The following are the cultural aims of education :
1. To preserve culture.
2. To transmit & promote culture.
3.To make unity in diversity.
4.To socialize individuals.

MORAL AIM
 Morality of an individual includes physical fitness, resolution and will power.
 Morality is a virtue which needs a medium for getting exercised.
The following are the moral aims of education.
1. To develop individuality.
2. To build up strong character/morality.
3. To inculcate values.

SPIRITUAL AIM
"Spirituality’’ refers to the thing that has its existence some what or totally related to the essence of "spirit".
 The spiritual dimension relates to an individual's innate values or ethics.
 Education provides an opportunity of perfection and strength in spirituality.
The spiritual aim of education are as follows:
1. To draw out the best or perfect from the soul.
2. To strengthen the concept of spirituality.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES-
Educational objectives are the statements of those changes in behaviour which are desired as a result of
specific learner and teacher activity.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES


The objectives should be:
 Be written in behavioural terms.
 Reflect the condition.
 Reflect the standard.
 Be reasonable in number.
 Be consistent with one another.
 Be descriptive.
 Logical
 Feasible and achievable.
 Measurable and observable

School of Nursing
 Philosophy:

 The basic idea of School of Nursing believes that health is a fundamental right of all people and
everyone has the responsibility towards maintaining their own health.

 For initiating the fundamental thought of school health nursing it is believed that nursing is to assist
the individual sick or well in performance of those activities contributing to health, it’s recovery or
peaceful death that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will and knowledge.
 School of Nursing believes that the teachers have responsibilities to be the role model and create
learning environment that enable students to acquire self-directed learning and foster an attitude of
life long learning.

 undergraduate nursing programme(GNM Nursing programme) is broad based education directed


towards helping the student in their all around development and become exemplary citizens by
adhering to code of ethics and professional conduct at all times. The students take pride in their
profession in fulfilling personal, social and professional obligation so as to respond to national and
international aspiration.

 Aims:

 To promote and strengthen the nursing skills for better competence in nursing profession.
 To meet the shortage of qualified nursing personnel in the country in general.
 Provide quality nursing care in collaboration with individuals and groups.
 Demonstrate critical thinking skills in making decisions in all situations.
 To prepare nurse with a sound educational program in nursing to enable them to function as efficient
members of the health team, beginning with the competencies for the first level position in all kinds
of healthcare settings.
 To help nurse to develop an ability to co-operative and co-ordinate with members of the health team
in the prevention of disease, promotion of the health and rehabilitation of the sick.
 To help nurse in their personal and professional development, so that they are able to make
maximum contribution to the society as useful and productive individual, citizen as well as efficient
nurses.
 To prepare nurse to keep pace with latest professional and technological developments and use these
for providing nursing care service.

 Objectives:

 Demonstrate competency in providing health care to individual, sick or well, using nursing process.
 Assess the nursing need of client from birth to death.
 Provide effective nursing care for maintaining best possible level of health in all aspects.
 Promote self care in people under their care.
 Apply problem solving techniques in nursing practice.
 Apply knowledge from the humanities, biological and behavioral science in functioning as a nurse.
Participate as member of the health team in delivery of curative preventive, promotive and
rehabilitative health care service.
 Mobilize community resources and their involvement in working with the communities.
 Demonstrate use of ethical values in their personal and professional organization.
 Demonstrate interest in activities of professional organization.
 Recognize the need for continuing education for professional development. Demonstrate basic skills
in teaching patient and giving nursing care to them.
 Demonstrate basic skills in administration and leadership while working with other members of
health team and community and assist in research activities.
College of Nursing

 Philosophy:

 The faculty of the College of Nursing accepts the philosophy of Bangalore University to which it is
affiliated.

 The faculty believes that nursing is an integral part of the healthcare delivery system and share
responsibility by working collaboratively with other allied professions for the attainment of optimal
health for all members of society. As an essential health service, nursing includes the prevention of
disease, the promotion, restoration, and maintenance of optimum health for individuals and families
in hospital and community settings.
 Professional nursing is broad in scope. It considers all aspects of patient- centered care achieved by a
multi-disciplinary approach. Inherent in the practice of nursing, is the teaching and counseling of
patient and families. A concurrent study of the arts and sciences is a necessary requirement for
effective professional education and practice.

 The faculty conceives education as a life-long learning process. It seeks to engender appropriate
behavioral changes in students in order to facilitate their development which will assist them to live
personally satisfying and socially useful lives. Education for nursing is founded on a sound general
education which encompasses the physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences and the
humanities. The faculty recognizes that the practice of nursing includes the application of knowledge
derived from these disciplines.

 The faculty acknowledges responsibility for moulding a program of studies for students which
provides for the development of specialized knowledge and skills and desirable attitudes relevant to
nursing and basic to professional duties to be performed; affords practice in independent decision-
making, stressing the necessity for a systematic approach for solving patient's healthcare problems;
prepares the nurse practitioner to engage in the primary, acute, and long-term care of patients of all
ages in a variety of settings; stimulates the desires to augment knowledge, skills, and abilities, and
interests through continuing education; and creates and atmosphere for the student to become self-
directive and a responsible citizen.

 Aims:
 The goal of the postcertificate degree program leading to a bachelor of science in nursing is the
preparation of the trained nurse as a generalist who accepts responsibility for enhancing the
effectiveness of nursing care.

 Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives at basic
level in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

 Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of
facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing
services and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to
assume the role of teacher, supervisor and manager in a clinical / public health setting.
 Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine, including alternative
systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.

 Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and
groups.

 Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and
groups

 Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality
care.

 Objectives:

 Assess health status, identify nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients/
clients that contribute to health of individuals, families and communities. Primary care denotes
health promotion and specific protection. Secondary care deals with early diagnosis and treatment.
Tertiary care refers to disability limitation and rehabilitation. The essential elements of nursing
practice are those that are related to maintaining or restoring normal life functions, assessing patient's
physical and emotional state of nursing care based on scientific principles. In providing these
services, the nurse functions as a member of the health team in interpreting and carrying the
instructions of physicians, by collaborating with professional colleagues in the planning and delivery
of health services and by acting independently when the needs of the patient and the principles of
nursing practice so indicate.
 Demonstrate competency in the skills and techniques of nursing based on concepts and principles
from selected areas of physical, biological and behavioral
 sciences.
 Participate as members of health team in the promotive, preventive and restorative health care
delivery system of the country.
 Demonstrate leadership qualities and decision- making abilities in various situations.
 Recognize the need for continued learning for their personal and professional development.
 Demonstrate skills in teaching, management, interpersonal relations and communications. Practice
ethical values in their personal and professional life.

 Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in clinical/ community health settings.

 Participate effectively as members of the health team in health care delivery system.

 Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in clinical / community health settings.

 Conduct need based research studies in various settings and utilize the research findings to improve
the quality of care.

 Demonstrate awareness, interest and contribute towards advancement of self and of the profession.

Conclusion:
Nursing care is provided for people with widely diverse health and sick care needs in multiple contexts
worldwide. The knowledge and competence to meet such a wide variety of care needs may be daunting for
the student starting a programme of study to become a registered nurse. Nursing programmes are designed
to allow knowledge and practice experience to be accumulated and assimilated by the nursing student within
the 3- or 4-year course period. However, learning is lifelong, and the journey of learning through a pre-
registration nursing programme is only the beginning.
