NURSING AS A PROFESSION

A profession is an occupation or calling requiring advanced training


and experience in some specific or specialized body of knowledge
which provides service to society in that special field. Professional
nursing is a service devoted to the promotion and social welfare.
Criteria of profession:
 To provide a needed service to the society
 To advance knowledge in it’s field.
 To protect it’s members and make it possible to practise
effectively
 It has a strong internal organization of members
 It is practical rather than theoretical.
 It is basically intellectual.
According to Bixler and Bixler criteria for profession:
 A profession is a form of employment especially one that is
respected in society as honourable and is possible only for an
educated person.
 It has it’s own body of knowledge based on social and scientific
principles.
 The members of this profession utilize this knowledge to
identify and solve problems.
 It has a service aim as well as academic and theoretical aim.
 Constantly enlarges it’s body of knowledge through research in
order to improve it’s service.
 It determines the qualification necessary for those who enter
into practise.
 It has a code of ethics.
 Functions autonomously in the formation of professional policy
and in control of professional activities.
 It provides a freedom of action, opportunity for continuous
professional growth and economic security.
 A profession recognizes it’s responsibility to develop programs
in cooperation with institution in order to develop skill and to
learn method of service.
Characteristics of a profession:
 The basic profession requires an extended education of it’s
members, as well as a basic liberal foundation.
 A profession has a theoretical body of specialized knowledge
leading to defined skills, abilities and norms.
 A profession provides a specific service.
 Members of a profession have autonomy in decision making
and practise.
 The profession has a code of ethics for practise.
 Authority to control it’s work.
 Service to the society.
 Extensive period of formal training.
 Self-regulation
 Credentialing system to certify competency.
 Legal re-enforcement of professional standards.
 Ethical practise
Nursing as a profession:
 Nursing is a discipline involved in the delivery of health care to
the society.
 It is a helping profession.
 It is service oriented to maintain health and well-being of
people.
 It is an art and science.
 Professionalism refers to professional character, spirit or
methods. It is a set of attributes, a way of life that implies
responsibility and commitment.
 Professionalization is the process of becoming professional that
is of acquiring characteristics considered to be professional.
Professional nurse is a health worker, a graduate from a
recognized college or school who is idefined by law as a
registered nurse whether graduated from a baccalaureate(B.Sc)
or a diploma programme.
Philosophy:
Definition:
The study of fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and
existence especially when considered as an academic discipline.
Philosophy of Nursing:
Nursing is viewed as both an art and science reflecting upon the
concepts of nursing. Nursing is an applied discipline which express
itself in practice and has it’s foundation rooted in scientific
knowledge, theory and research. Nursing is also expressed as a
caring, therapeutic and teaching discipline. The goal of nursing is
optimum client wellness, and the maximum level of functioning. The
nursing interventions are evidence based and stem from their core
knowledge. The professional nurse must appreciate the role of
philosophy of nursing includes believes and values with regard to
man in general and specifically man as the learner, teacher, nurse,
client and the believes about health, illness, society, nursing and
learning etc.
According to philosophy, nursing is considered as profession of
charity. It covers the following aspects:
 Spiritual- Religion should serve as the primary integrating factor
 Moral- Nurse has to develop right conscience
 Intellectual- To provide a systematic development and training
 Emotional needs- Nurse must be able to function as a mature,
self-dependant and responsible individual and must be able to
relate well to other people.
 Physical- To promote harmonious development, physical needs
to preserve essential of health
 Social- Nursing is linked with social culture

Objectives and responsibilities of a graduate nurse:


Objectives:
 Prepare nurses who will give expert bed side nursing care
 Provide integration of heath and social aspects theory and
practise.
 Provide an adequate, sound, scientific foundation to
understand the functioning of body and mind in health
 Prepare to work cooperatively, develop sense of responsibility
 Provide opportunity to develop skills and personality
 Upgrade nursing as a profession
Responsibilities:
 Interview patient
 Maintain compliance with confidentiality
 Collaborate with registered nurse
 Deliver patient care
 Monitor patient status
 Help with the diagnosis of patient ailments
 Educate patient on treatment
 Follow the instructor of supervisors
Trends influencing Nursing practise and education:
General objective:

Definition of trends:
The general direction in which health care or nursing profession is
moving ahead.
Definition of Nursing practise:
It is described as an advanced level of clinical nursing practise that
maximize the use of graduate educational preparation- in dept
nursing knowledge and expertise in meeting individuals, family, and
communities.
Introduction:
New programme, courses, experience, and changing requirement for
the development of new skills pave the way for different
opportunities for students to prepare for initial and continual practise
in a rapidly changing society.
Essential differences among basic education programmes, innovation
in new degree programmes, courses, and nurses’ integrity these
changes into their way of being to become thinking nurses as well as
doing nurses.
Thinking nurses learn to integrate essential knowledge, attitude and
stills into care that involve best practises and evidence-based
practises that promotes patient safety and quality care.

Responsibility:
 Work effectively under stress/pressure express frustration in
appropriate manner and place

relation to the communities served.
 Responsible for own professional growth and development
 Assist in general housekeeping duties for the department
 Attends all mandatory hospital Inservice before evaluation time
 Communicate staff concern/suggestions to lead change
nurse/manager
 Completes net learning programmes
 Develop and implement a plan of care and demonstrate
leadership to ensure all patient/ family needs are meet.
 Promote effective working relationship and work corporately as
part of the department team to facilitate the department’s
ability to meet it’s goal and objective
