ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

S.
Question COs BLs Marks
No.
1. Compare limit state method and working stress method of design. CO1 L2 2M
2. List the assumptions of limit state of collapse - flexure. CO1 L1 2M
3. Illustrate the stress and strain blocks of a rectangular RC section with CO1 L2 2M
diagrams. Also, indicate the significant values on the diagrams.
4. Explain the terms (i) neutral axis and (ii) limiting moment of resistance. CO1 L2 2M
Also, give their expressions for a rectangular RC beam of width of b
and effective depth of d.
5. Support or oppose the statement: “Over-reinforced sections are CO1 L2 5M
preferred to Under-reinforced sections”.
6. A rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a width of 250 mm is CO1 L3 5M
reinforced with 6 bars of 20mm dia. The overall depth of the beam is
400 mm. Calculate the moment of resistance of the beam. Use M30
grade of concrete and Fe500 steel.
7. Solve for the moment carrying capacity of a doubly reinforced beam CO1 L3 5M
if it is reinforced with 3nos of 20mm diameter mild steel bars in
compression and 4nos of 25mm diameter mild steel bars in tension.
The size of the beam is 300mm x 600mm and the effective covers to
compression and tension reinforcement are 30mm and 50mm
respectively. Use M20 grade concrete.
8. Design a simply supported rectangular beam for the following data: CO1 L4 5M
effective span of 5 m; width of beam of 250 mm; overall depth of 500
mm; effective cover of 50 mm; service load of 40 kN/m. Use M20
grade of concrete and Fe415 steel.
fsc values for Fe 415 steel for corresponding d1/d are:
d1/d ratio :0.05 0.1 0.15 0.2
2
fsc (N/mm ) :355 353 342 329
9. A T-beam is having the following dimension: width of flange, bf = CO1 L4 5M
1000mm depth of flange, Df = 125mm, width of web, bw = 250 mm
overall depth of beam, D = 250 mm The concrete grade is M20 and
the grade of reinforcing steel is Fe415. The clear cover is 25 mm.
Considering a balanced section having 20 mm bars, determine the
area of tension steel and the moment capacity of the section.
