Hi Jimmy,
How are you? I hope you’re having a great time in Australia. I know it’s only been two weeks, but I miss
you already. I’m trying to keep busy, though. In fact, I joined an environmental club!
It’s called Green Bricks and its idea is to bring the countryside into the city. This can mean a number of
things, from planting trees to helping out in their neighbourhood garden. At the moment, I’m working with a
group that offers to plant fruit trees in schools. If they agree, we visit the school and find a good place to
plant one, two, three or more trees. We decide on what kind of tree would be suitable (for example, orange
trees need the weather to be warmer than apple trees). Then the following week we go back with the trees
and plant them.
We make sure the children take part as much as possible, both in choosing the trees and digging the
holes. Then, we give a talk on taking care of the trees and how much water the children will need to give
them. We explain that the children have to be gentle with the trees and not touch them too much,
especially when they’re young. We answer any questions they have about either the trees or the
environment in general.
It’s great that we’re doing something so practical to help the environment. I can’t wait till you come back so
you can join the club too!
Love,
Abigail
