A Special Liquid
A major problem on our planet is the amount of plastic pollution floating in our oceans. It affects all
marine life that call it “home”. Nowadays, many people are trying to reduce the amount of plastic they
use, and many others are trying to clean up the oceans, but a lot of plastic pollution is very small. These
microplastics are hard to see and are not easy to deal with.
However, one amazing teenager called Fionn Ferreira has come up with a way to remove microplastics
from water. He invented a liquid that has got oil and a special powder in it. This amazing liquid can catch
microplastics. People can then take the liquid and the microplastics out of the water using a magnet,
which is easy and leaves only the water behind.
The 18-year-old student from West Cork in Ireland was able to catch 85% of ten different types of
microplastics in the water. His invention won the Grand Prize at the Google Science Fair in 2019. His
clever idea solves the problem of microplastics in the oceans. Fionn hopes towns and cities all around
the world will use his invention so they can stop the plastic from entering the oceans.
Fionn is the perfect example of what one person can do to help save the planet. No problem is so big we
can’t find a solution. Fionn is truly an inspiration to us all.

1 The plastic that floats on the surface of the water doesn’t have a bad effect on marine life.
