COMEDY CLASSES

When the word comedy is mentioned to some theater artists,

they relate it to a minor genre; it would seem that it is easier to
do comedy, especially if it is funny than drama.
But there are great famous phrases that support the opposite.
"It's easier to make people cry than laugh"
"Anyone can do a drama, the difficult thing is to make people laugh."
"You have to try not to make them laugh at the actor or the character"
but rather that they laugh with the character.

The comedy was represented by the cheerful mask called Thalia, the drama was
sadness, represented by Melponene.
Both goddesses possessed beauty, love and fortune, the big difference was that
the drama consisted of not being able to enjoy or share all that pleasure with
anyone.

It reminds us of the drama of the beginnings of an actor who is considered to be a

good actor only if he makes a drama.

It would seem like a contradiction to say that comedy is a dramatic fact, but it
really is.
Comedy as a theatrical and literary genre comes in different forms and names.

HIGH COMEDY

High or great comedy uses subtleties of language, allusions, wordplay and

"intellectually acute" situations. The Comedy of Humours, whose origin is
attributed to Ben Johnson, author of Every Man is his Humour, is the prototype of
high comedy in charge of illustrating the different senses of humor in human
nature.

ANCIENT COMEDY

The ancient comedy is that of Aristophanes (5th century BC).

Derived from fertility rites in honor of Dionysus, it is often violent, obscene and
grotesque.
The chorus played an essential dramatic role.

LOW COMEDY

Distinction according to the quality of the comic procedures.

Low comedy uses farce and visual comedy procedures (gag, slapstick humor,
beatings), current example. Mr Bean is the prototype of slapstick humor

Although there are many types, they can basically be grouped into the following
categories.

 Comedy of entanglements : A lie or mistake by

one of the protagonists generates confusion and
misunderstandings that generate the entire plot.
The clearest example is Wanda's Tangles.

 Comedy of characters : Usual stereotypes of

certain groups are taken, and the interactions they
have between them are played a little. The
degree of “fidelity” of the stereotypes can
make them very realistic, or lead them to
farce. Within this category is Gigolo by
Accident.

 Fish out of water : A character with a certain activity, taste or ideology is taken
and placed in a completely opposite environment or situation. The best
example is Bulletproof Babysitter.

 Surreal Comedy : The plot is set in

a situation so openly impossible or
crazy that the same discrepancies
generate humor. A clear case is
Brazil.

 Tragicomedy : It is where a
dramatic story or one with
solemn overtones is mixed,
which becomes comical when
these situations are identified with reality, and their inadequacy is discovered.
To do this, just watch Dog Day Afternoon.

 Slapstick or visual comedy : It is one where laughter is generated by

accidents, ridicule or misadventures of the protagonists, usually in the form of
physical gags. The most extreme form of it is Jackass.

 Black Comedy : It is one where overly solemn or serious themes such as

death or violence are mocked. It is usually a form of criticism. The clearest
example is Snatch.
 Farce: It is character comedy taken to the limit, where stereotypes are
exaggerated, and situations are taken to ridiculous limits. The line that
separates it from surreal humor is sometimes very thin. Typical example is The
Meaning of Life.
 Sexy Comedy : It is one where eroticism and sexual themes are used as the
framework of the plot. A typical example is Satiricosissimo.
 Parody: It is one that takes elements from a film, or genre thereof, and
overuses them until generating a vision of ridiculousness. The clearest is A
Scary Movie.
