At independence in 1966 Botswana was one of the poorest countries in the world, but today
it is among the better off developing countries. This is largely because of its minerals, mainly
diamonds, copper nickel, coal and soda ash, as well as small quantities of asbestos, gold and
manganese. More minerals may be discovered in the future, as more mineral exploitation is
carried out.
