Substance use disorder- The act of using drugs that are not legal or medically prescribed.
Psychoactive drug- Chemicals that affect the brain and body, inducing various effects.
Tolerance- Drugs require higher and higher amounts to affect the body.
Depressants- Substances that slow or reduce bodily functions, producing feelings of well-being and
slowing reaction times. The opposite of stimulants.
Stimulants- Substances that speed up or increase bodily functions, producing feelings of wakefulness,
awareness, and well-being.
Alcohol use disorder- steady extreme drinking over time, to the point of abandonment of other
priorities.
Opiates- Substances that numb pain by way of releasing endorphins, creating feelings of extreme
euphoria. Hideously addictive, they are known to rapidly change brain chemistry.
Nicotine- A stimulant is most well known for its addictive properties and nature as a carcinogen.
Cocaine- A stimulant that blocks the process of reuptake, causing feelings of immense happiness.
Methamphetamine- a stimulant that provides feelings of extreme energy at the cost of vastly reduced
health and weight.
Ecstasy (MDMA)- A stimulant and hallucinogen that creates feelings of happiness and lightness
commonly used as a club drug.
LSD- A extremely potent hallucinogen that create vibrant and short lived “trips” when taken.
THC- a mild hallucinogen extracted from a marijuana plant, known to be mildly tolerated within the U.S.
2. What role do tolerance, addiction, and withdrawal play in substance abuse disorders? Explain
how the three are connected.
Addiction occurs when substance abuse occurs for a prolonged period, as tolerance leads to ever
growing does needed to affect the individual, and withdrawals occurring when one would step away
from their quickly growing habit.
2. What are psychoactive drugs and how do they impact the brain and induce altered states of
consciousness?
Psychoactive drugs are drugs that distort or change biological functions by breaching the blood-brain
barrier and mimicking or preventing the effects of neurotransmitters, creating feelings of euphoria, calm,
or alertness.
