determine what foods a person eat.
In addition to personal preferences,
there are cultural, social, political,
religious, environmental and even
economic factors.

2. Personal likes and dislikes

Taste preferences are based on flavour, colour and texture. Positive and
negative attitudes may be formed about food as children observe what
foods are purchased and served in the home.

Foods that are well prepared, cooked, and attractively presented is more
likely to be chosen and enjoyed.

4. Religious and moral beliefs

Religious beliefs are very important to many people and some religions
have specific rules about what should and should not be eaten.

The food that a population consumes depends on what is made available


through production and importation. Sometimes some food may be scarce
for several reasons.

Many foods in other countries are imported from all around the world making
food choices even greater.

8. Nutrition information

Food and nutrition education provides people with information that is


extremely helpful when they are making food choices. It involves not only
having an understanding of nutrition but applying that knowledge.

10. Food technology

Food technology has increased food choices in various ways, including:

- producing cheaper version of basic foods

- producing new types of food from unusual sources

- producing quick-to-prepare foods and ready prepared meals

- The cost of growing, harvesting, storing, processing and distributing.

- Seasonal variation in fresh foods, e.g. soft fruit is cheaper in the summer
when it is most available.

- Variations in the quality of particular food, e.g. tougher cuts of meat that
require more cooking are generally cheaper.

-Income determines what food can be purchased and consumed; however, in


many situation, there is a generally poor distribution of income.

12. Storage and cooking facilities

The kinds of meals prepared by individuals and families are sometimes


dependent on whether they have the correct storage and cooking facilities.
Example some persons may prefer to stay away from tough cuts of meat if
they do not have a pressure cooker.
13. Cooking Skills

People will quickly cook meals that they have knowledge of


preparing.

14. Age of family members

Depending on one’s age different foods may be consumed. Often


times young people make less healthy food choices than adults.
