WHAT IS MEAL PLANNING?

Meal planning is making a plan of meals with adequate nutrition for every
member of the family within the available resources. The term ‘available resources’
means whatever the family has in terms of time, energy and money.

IMPORTANCE OF MEAL PLANNING

Meal planning is important for meeting the nutritional requirements of the family
members. It helps us to decide what to eat each day and in each meal. We can call it our
‘daily food guide’.
Meal planning helps us to:
(a)Fulfill the nutritional requirements of the family members
(b)Make the food economical
(c) Cater to the food preferences of individual members
(d) Save energy, time and money
(e) Use left over food
The following section, will help you to understand these points clearly.
HOME SCIENCE
Meal planning
Meal planning is the process of creating meals based on one’s preferences, availability of
food, seasonal foods, sales on foods, schedule, and most especially budget. Home meal
preparation has become more and more advocated as a way to enhance dietary quality.
According to a study, people who planned their meals had better diets with higher
adherence to dietary guidelines and a wider variety of foods. Meal planning can help put
an end to the dreaded "What should I make for the family today?" dilemma and help you
eat healthy while on a budget.
Planning a meal on a budget
Planning a meal on a budget doesn’t have to deprive you of the food that you love; rather
it should help you
utilize your resources better. When trying to be intentional about your spending, meal
planning is a great first step. When you create a meal plan, you can determine how much
you want to spend for the week or the month. This will also help you avoid impulse
spending.
Some benefits of meal planning are:
1. Meal planning helps maintain a healthy diet.
2. It helps to plan your shopping and cooking in order to avoid buying and eating
unhealthful foods on impulse.
3. It helps to save time normally wasted on deciding what to eat.
4. It is cost-effective to buy foodstuffs in bulk and preserve them for later use.

Tips on how to plan your meals on a budget

1. Menu planning: Make a list of the ingredients you'll need for each recipe and decide
which ingredients you'll need from the grocery store, keeping in mind the ingredients that
the family is allergic to. You'll be less likely to spend money on convenience foods and
fast food when you have a strategy. Meals must be scheduled within your budget while
keeping in mind your financial situation. Base your meals on what is on sale or goods you
can buy in bulk. To prevent food from going to waste, stock up on items you will actually
eat. To keep expenses down, the menu should include affordable, nutrient-dense
alternatives.
2. Food habits and preferences: Another crucial factor that must be taken into account
is eating habits. Preferences merit special consideration. Understand the food
preferences of your family. Encourage your

family to share their favorites and participate in menu planning. You may then keep an
eye out for favorite ingredients and foods during sales.
3. Pattern and Frequency of Meals: The number of meals eaten each day and the
times at which those meals are eaten also affect the menu items chosen. It helps to plan
and prepare meals ahead of time. It also helps to decide on the quantity of goods being
purchased.
What is Food Production?
Food production, as the name suggests, is all about preparing food, in which raw
materials are converted into ready-made food products for human use either in the home
or in the food processing industries. Its process comprises scientific approaches. Food
production has many sections and it starts with basic things like cleaning, packing,
segregating, sorting, preparing, adding ingredients in correct proportions, presenting, etc.
Let us explore food production notes to learn how the food is produced and what are the
methods involved in the production of food.

How is Food Produced?

There are large numbers of plant and animal products, which are used for our well-being.
They provide us with food, which comes from both plants and animals. These include
grains, pulses, spices, honey, nuts, cereals, milk, vegetables, fruits, egg, meat, chicken,
etc. The existence of our life is completely depended on plants and animals. Altogether,
plant and animal species provide 90% of global energy.

Types of Food Production

Food production is further classified into different types including, cultivation, selection,
crop management, harvesting, crop production, preserving, baking, pasteurizing,
pudding, carving, butchering, fermenting, pickling, drink and candy making, restaurants,
etc.

Methods of Food Production

 Chopping or slicing of vegetables.
 Curing food.
 Grinding and marinating.
 Emulsification.
 Food fermentation.
 Fermenting beer at brewing industries.
 Boiling, broiling, frying, grilling, steaming and mixing. Pasteurization.
 Fruit juice processing.
 Removing the outer layers either by peeling and skinning. Gasification of soft drinks.

What Is an Adequate Diet?

An adequate diet is a diet that should meet all the nutritional and energy requirements
that a person needs, and it can be of any form, such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, etc.
The adequate level of needs is different for infants, children, girls, boys, men, and
