‭Letter of Introduction‬

‭“You never really know someone, you know”‬‭- Anonymous‬

‭I‬ ‭never‬ ‭would‬ ‭have‬ ‭expected‬ ‭to‬ ‭be‬ ‭as‬ ‭explorative‬ ‭as‬ ‭I‬ ‭was‬ ‭with‬ ‭all‬‭my‬‭classes.‬‭I‬‭had‬
‭always‬ ‭been‬ ‭into‬ ‭urban‬ ‭planning‬ ‭since‬ ‭high‬ ‭school.‬ ‭Coming‬ ‭into‬ ‭college‬ ‭I‬ ‭expected‬‭learning‬
‭about‬‭urban‬‭planning‬‭to‬‭be‬‭a‬‭straightforward‬‭process‬‭(whatever‬‭that‬‭would’ve‬‭meant).‬‭Yet‬‭over‬
‭the‬ ‭past‬ ‭3‬ ‭years‬ ‭I‬ ‭have‬ ‭learned‬ ‭to‬ ‭challenge,‬ ‭question,‬ ‭and‬ ‭reevaluate‬ ‭so‬ ‭many‬ ‭ideals‬
‭surrounding‬ ‭community‬ ‭and‬ ‭the‬ ‭built‬ ‭environment.‬ ‭I‬ ‭learned‬ ‭to‬ ‭value‬ ‭my‬ ‭interdisciplinary‬
‭education,‬ ‭both‬ ‭through‬ ‭the‬ ‭Honors‬ ‭Program‬ ‭and‬ ‭my‬ ‭silly‬ ‭little‬ ‭major,‬ ‭which‬ ‭allowed‬ ‭me‬ ‭to‬
‭constantly‬‭explore‬‭so‬‭many‬‭ideas‬‭across‬‭so‬‭many‬‭different‬‭disciplines.‬‭I‬‭think‬‭Honors‬‭and‬‭CEP‬
‭were two of the best decisions of my life.‬
‭Sometime‬ ‭in‬ ‭the‬ ‭middle‬ ‭of‬ ‭my‬ ‭2nd‬ ‭year,‬ ‭I‬ ‭decided‬ ‭that‬ ‭my‬ ‭focus‬ ‭would‬ ‭be‬
‭“Community-based‬‭Placemaking”‬‭(along‬‭with‬‭community‬‭engagement‬‭and‬‭development).‬‭This‬
‭focus‬ ‭has‬ ‭really‬ ‭encapsulated‬ ‭the‬ ‭interdisciplinary‬ ‭nature‬ ‭of‬ ‭my‬‭interests.‬‭Not‬‭only‬‭looking‬‭at‬
‭the‬ ‭physical‬ ‭design‬ ‭of‬ ‭a‬ ‭space‬ ‭that‬ ‭makes‬ ‭it‬ ‭a‬ ‭“place”,‬ ‭but‬ ‭also‬ ‭the‬ ‭community,‬ ‭social‬
‭structures‬ ‭and‬ ‭processes,‬ ‭identity,‬ ‭history,‬ ‭that‬‭develops‬‭our‬‭meaning‬‭of‬‭a‬‭place.‬‭I‬‭learned‬‭to‬
‭create‬‭my‬‭understanding‬‭of‬‭community‬‭engagement‬‭and‬‭placemaking‬‭in‬‭so‬‭many‬‭lenses‬‭from‬
‭the‬ ‭immediate‬ ‭observation‬ ‭of‬ ‭public‬ ‭space‬ ‭to‬ ‭the‬ ‭ethical‬ ‭backings,‬ ‭from‬ ‭how‬ ‭a‬ ‭space‬ ‭is‬
‭oriented‬‭and‬‭configured‬‭to‬‭the‬‭uses‬‭of‬‭space.‬‭Placemaking‬‭is‬‭something‬‭that‬‭I‬‭still‬‭am‬‭curious‬
‭about and expect to continue interrogating in the future.‬
‭This‬ ‭ISP‬ ‭showcases‬ ‭the‬ ‭classes‬ ‭that‬ ‭I‬ ‭have‬ ‭taken‬ ‭throughout‬ ‭my‬ ‭last‬ ‭2‬ ‭years‬ ‭of‬
‭undergraduate‬‭education.‬‭Each‬‭class‬‭was‬‭taken‬‭intentionally,‬‭being‬‭able‬‭to‬‭bring‬‭pieces‬‭of‬‭my‬
‭own‬‭previous‬‭educational‬‭background‬‭into‬‭them,‬‭and‬‭being‬‭able‬‭to‬‭take‬‭away‬‭ideas‬‭that‬‭further‬
‭my overall understanding of the world.‬

‭CEP 301: The Idea of Community‬
‭“Theories‬‭of‬‭community‬‭and‬‭communal‬‭rights‬‭and‬‭responsibilities.‬‭Experience‬‭building‬‭a‬
‭learning‬ ‭community‬ ‭within‬ ‭major.‬ ‭Explores‬ ‭struggles‬ ‭for‬ ‭community‬ ‭in‬ ‭every‬ ‭sector‬ ‭of‬
‭life”.‬ ‭The‬ ‭idea‬ ‭of‬ ‭community‬ ‭is‬ ‭always‬ ‭something‬ ‭I‬ ‭have‬ ‭been‬ ‭curious‬ ‭about,‬ ‭having‬
‭written‬ ‭about‬ ‭my‬ ‭ideals‬ ‭about‬ ‭community‬ ‭in‬ ‭both‬ ‭my‬ ‭application‬ ‭to‬ ‭UW,‬ ‭and‬ ‭CEP.‬
‭Through‬‭this‬‭class,‬‭I‬‭was‬‭able‬‭to‬‭explore,‬‭challenge,‬‭reinforce,‬‭and‬‭balance‬‭my‬‭personal‬
‭idea of community. I also learned important facilitation skills through this course.‬

‭URBDP 404 Introduction To Geographic Information Systems‬

‭“Provides‬ ‭students‬ ‭with‬ ‭introductory‬ ‭practical‬ ‭knowledge‬ ‭of‬ ‭Geographical‬ ‭Information‬
‭Systems‬‭and‬‭Science‬‭for‬‭current‬‭and‬‭future‬‭coursework‬‭in‬‭urban‬‭planning”.‬‭Knowledge‬
‭of‬‭GIS‬‭seems‬‭like‬‭a‬‭very‬‭useful‬‭technical‬‭skill‬‭to‬‭have‬‭in‬‭the‬‭planning‬‭field.‬‭Through‬‭this‬
‭class‬ ‭I‬ ‭learned‬ ‭an‬ ‭overview‬ ‭on‬ ‭how‬ ‭to‬ ‭use‬ ‭the‬ ‭ArcGIS‬ ‭software‬ ‭to‬ ‭analyze‬‭real‬‭world‬
‭scenarios which is a hard skill I can use in the future. This class is my DSP credit.‬

‭L ARCH 341 Site Design and Planning‬

‭“Introduces‬‭urban‬‭ecological‬‭design‬‭issues‬‭for‬‭good‬‭site-planning‬‭processes,‬‭principles,‬
‭and‬ ‭methods”.‬ ‭Last‬ ‭quarter‬ ‭I‬ ‭had‬ ‭a‬ ‭little‬ ‭taste‬ ‭of‬ ‭landscape‬ ‭architecture‬ ‭through‬ ‭the‬
‭intro‬ ‭planting‬ ‭design‬ ‭class,‬ ‭and‬ ‭this‬ ‭quarter‬ ‭I‬ ‭wanted‬ ‭another‬ ‭to‬ ‭explore‬ ‭site‬ ‭design‬
‭more.‬ ‭Through‬ ‭this‬ ‭class‬‭I‬‭learned‬‭about‬‭all‬‭the‬‭different‬‭factors‬‭that‬‭go‬‭into‬‭good‬‭site‬
‭design and now I realized I’m more interested in site design than I initially thought.‬
‭Winter 2023‬

‭CEP 302: Environmental Response‬

‭“Explores‬‭issues‬‭of‬‭environmental‬‭crisis‬‭and‬‭societal‬‭responses.‬‭Readings‬‭and‬‭reflective‬
‭analysis‬‭from‬‭broad‬‭selection‬‭of‬‭authoritative‬‭sources‬‭to‬‭develop‬‭grounded‬‭perspective‬
‭in‬ ‭ecological‬ ‭literacy‬ ‭and‬ ‭consciousness.‬ ‭Concurrently,‬ ‭experiential‬ ‭education‬ ‭in‬
‭challenges‬‭and‬‭practical‬‭responses‬‭to‬‭building‬‭sustainable‬‭society‬‭through‬‭participation‬
‭in‬‭community-based‬‭environmental‬‭effort”.‬‭This‬‭class‬‭provided‬‭a‬‭very‬‭good‬‭overview‬‭of‬
‭environmental‬ ‭issues‬ ‭in‬ ‭the‬ ‭US,‬ ‭and‬ ‭its‬ ‭connection‬ ‭to‬ ‭planning.‬ ‭This‬ ‭class‬ ‭especially‬
‭helped me learn how to look through large government documents like an EIS.‬

‭LARCH 361: The Human Experience of Place‬

‭“Interdisciplinary‬ ‭approaches‬ ‭to‬ ‭exploring‬ ‭the‬ ‭reciprocal‬ ‭relationship‬ ‭between‬ ‭people‬
‭and‬‭the‬‭landscapes‬‭of‬‭everyday‬‭life”.‬‭I‬‭have‬‭learned‬‭a‬‭little‬‭bit‬‭about‬‭the‬‭sense‬‭of‬‭place‬
‭through‬ ‭a‬ ‭few‬ ‭classes‬ ‭and‬ ‭I’ve‬ ‭since‬ ‭been‬ ‭hooked‬ ‭on‬ ‭the‬ ‭idea.‬ ‭Naturally,‬ ‭I‬ ‭took‬ ‭this‬
‭class to learn more about what the experience of place entails.‬

‭AIS 379: Powwow‬

‭“Explores‬ ‭the‬ ‭historical‬ ‭and‬ ‭cultural‬ ‭roots‬ ‭of‬ ‭powwow.‬ ‭Discusses‬ ‭the‬ ‭ways‬ ‭this‬
‭indigenous‬ ‭Native‬ ‭art‬ ‭form‬ ‭has‬ ‭adapted‬ ‭since‬ ‭prehistoric‬ ‭times”.‬ ‭I‬ ‭took‬ ‭this‬ ‭class‬
‭because‬ ‭I‬‭was‬‭curious‬‭about‬‭American‬‭Indian‬‭Studies.‬‭From‬‭this‬‭class‬‭I‬‭learned‬‭about‬
‭Indigenous‬ ‭identity‬ ‭and‬ ‭knowledge‬ ‭systems,‬ ‭which‬ ‭give‬ ‭me‬ ‭a‬ ‭broader‬ ‭breadth‬ ‭of‬
‭knowledge for understanding the world in general.‬

‭HONORS 221: Disenchantment of The West‬

‭“This‬ ‭course‬ ‭is‬ ‭in‬ ‭part‬ ‭about‬ ‭the‬ ‭history‬‭of‬‭ideas,‬‭but‬‭seeks‬‭more‬‭to‬‭trace‬‭the‬‭way‬‭the‬
‭imagination‬ ‭of‬ ‭what‬ ‭we‬ ‭think‬ ‭is‬ ‭real‬ ‭and‬ ‭unreal‬ ‭has‬ ‭changed‬ ‭over‬ ‭the‬‭last‬‭millennium.‬
‭This‬ ‭course‬ ‭will‬ ‭seek‬ ‭to‬ ‭understand‬ ‭the‬ ‭intellectual,‬ ‭economic,‬ ‭religious,‬ ‭and‬
‭artistic/imaginative‬ ‭forces‬ ‭that‬ ‭drove‬ ‭this‬ ‭transformation”.‬ ‭In‬ ‭high‬ ‭school,‬ ‭my‬ ‭friends‬
‭were‬‭really‬‭into‬‭philosophy,‬‭but‬‭I‬‭thought‬‭I‬‭made‬‭my‬‭brain‬‭hurt.‬‭Like‬‭why‬‭are‬‭we‬‭thinking‬
‭so‬‭hard‬‭about‬‭all‬‭of‬‭this‬‭when‬‭we‬‭can‬‭all‬‭just‬‭vibe???‬‭I‬‭think‬‭growing‬‭up‬‭is‬‭realizing‬‭that‬
‭philosophy‬‭is‬‭something‬‭I‬‭care‬‭about‬‭because‬‭I‬‭found‬‭myself‬‭excited‬‭to‬‭sign‬‭up‬‭for‬‭this‬
‭class.‬ ‭The‬ ‭final‬ ‭for‬ ‭this‬ ‭class‬‭was‬‭writing‬‭our‬‭entire‬‭personal‬‭philosophy‬‭which‬‭I‬‭found‬
‭very important moving forward in a career that centers around different ideologies.‬

‭CEP 303: Social Structures and Processes‬
‭“Investigates‬ ‭use‬ ‭of‬‭formal‬‭and‬‭informal‬‭social‬‭structures‬‭and‬‭processes‬‭within‬‭context‬
‭of‬‭community‬‭and‬‭environment.‬‭Looks‬‭at‬‭patterns‬‭and‬‭institutions‬‭of‬‭social‬‭organization‬
‭and‬ ‭relationships‬ ‭among‬ ‭different‬ ‭sectors.‬ ‭Issues‬ ‭of‬ ‭interrelatedness,‬ ‭citizenship,‬
‭knowledge,‬ ‭and‬ ‭communication”.‬ ‭This‬ ‭class‬‭was‬‭really‬‭important‬‭in‬‭understanding‬‭the‬
‭deeper‬ ‭workings‬ ‭of‬ ‭physical‬ ‭space‬ ‭in‬‭a‬‭city.‬‭Overall,‬‭a‬‭big‬‭takeaway‬‭from‬‭this‬‭class‬‭is‬
‭that‬‭our‬‭physical‬‭built‬‭environments‬‭are‬‭a‬‭reflection‬‭of‬‭our‬‭social‬‭systems‬‭which‬‭is‬‭why‬
‭it is hard to change our built environment.‬

‭URBDP 300: Introduction To Urban Planning‬

‭“Principles‬ ‭and‬ ‭theories‬ ‭of‬ ‭urban‬ ‭structure‬ ‭and‬ ‭institutions.‬ ‭Concepts‬ ‭and‬ ‭logic‬ ‭of‬
‭planning‬‭as‬‭a‬‭community‬‭process‬‭and‬‭a‬‭professional‬‭activity.‬‭Evolution‬‭of‬‭planning‬‭ideas‬
‭in‬ ‭response‬ ‭to‬ ‭changing‬ ‭social,‬ ‭economic,‬ ‭and‬ ‭environmental‬ ‭conditions‬ ‭within‬ ‭the‬
‭American‬ ‭political‬ ‭framework.‬ ‭Complementary‬ ‭nature‬ ‭of‬ ‭public‬ ‭and‬ ‭private‬
‭responsibilities.‬ ‭Major‬ ‭procedures‬ ‭used‬ ‭by‬ ‭planners“.‬ ‭Urban‬ ‭planning‬ ‭is‬ ‭definitely‬
‭something‬ ‭I‬ ‭have‬ ‭always‬ ‭been‬ ‭interested‬ ‭in‬ ‭since‬ ‭high‬ ‭school,‬ ‭so‬ ‭naturally‬ ‭I‬ ‭want‬ ‭to‬
‭take‬‭this‬‭class‬‭to‬‭explore‬‭urban‬‭planning‬‭concepts.‬‭I‬‭have‬‭honestly‬‭been‬‭more‬‭into‬‭the‬
‭smaller‬‭scale‬‭design‬‭realm‬‭lately,‬‭so‬‭with‬‭this‬‭class‬‭I‬‭realized‬‭that‬‭I‬‭actually‬‭am‬‭not‬‭took‬
‭into real urban planning.‬

‭CEP 473: Digital Design Practicum‬

‭“Uses‬ ‭digital‬ ‭technologies‬ ‭for‬ ‭mapping,‬ ‭drafting,‬ ‭modeling,‬ ‭and‬ ‭communication.‬
‭Includes‬ ‭real-world‬ ‭case‬ ‭study‬ ‭projects‬ ‭that‬ ‭focus‬ ‭on‬ ‭urban‬ ‭design‬ ‭and‬ ‭planning‬
‭issues”.‬‭Upon‬‭a‬‭quick‬‭search‬‭for‬‭urban‬‭design‬‭internships‬‭I‬‭was‬‭met‬‭with‬‭requirements‬
‭of‬ ‭knowledge‬ ‭in‬ ‭Revit,‬ ‭Adobe,‬ ‭and‬‭more.‬‭I‬‭took‬‭this‬‭class‬‭to‬‭learn‬‭more‬‭digital‬‭design‬
‭skills to hopefully be more hireable in the future.‬

‭CEP 498: Exploring Public Spaces in Seattle‬

‭“Starting‬ ‭with‬ ‭readings‬ ‭from‬ ‭How‬ ‭to‬ ‭Study‬ ‭Public‬ ‭Life‬ ‭by‬ ‭Jan‬ ‭Gehl,‬ ‭this‬ ‭course‬ ‭will‬
‭provide‬ ‭students‬ ‭with‬ ‭the‬ ‭opportunity‬ ‭to‬ ‭practice‬ ‭observing,‬ ‭learning‬ ‭from,‬ ‭and‬
‭discussing‬‭public‬‭space”.‬‭I‬‭believe‬‭that‬‭being‬‭able‬‭to‬‭study‬‭public‬‭space‬‭is‬‭important‬‭for‬
‭any urban design field. Through this class, I improve my observational skills.‬

‭“This‬ ‭interdisciplinary‬ ‭study‬ ‭abroad‬ ‭program‬ ‭in‬ ‭Tokyo‬ ‭and‬ ‭Okinawa‬ ‭explores‬ ‭the‬
‭complex‬ ‭and‬ ‭evolving‬ ‭web‬ ‭of‬ ‭narratives‬ ‭surrounding‬ ‭Japanese‬ ‭national‬ ‭identity‬ ‭and‬
‭social‬‭memory…‬‭This‬‭study‬‭abroad‬‭program‬‭explores‬‭these‬‭dynamics‬‭and‬‭more‬‭from‬‭a‬

‭studies,‬‭race,‬‭gender,‬‭culture,‬‭literature‬‭and‬‭art”.‬‭This‬‭study‬‭abroad‬‭was‬‭impactful‬‭in‬‭my‬
‭understanding‬ ‭of‬ ‭the‬ ‭intersection‬ ‭of‬ ‭identity,‬ ‭memory,‬ ‭and‬ ‭art.‬ ‭I‬ ‭was‬‭able‬‭to‬‭study‬‭art‬
‭and public art and how that relates to placemaking and identity in Japan.‬
