I never would have expected to be as explorative as I was with allmyclasses.Ihad
always been into urban planning since high school. Coming into college I expectedlearning
abouturbanplanningtobeastraightforwardprocess(whateverthatwould’vemeant).Yetover
the past 3 years I have learned to challenge, question, and reevaluate so many ideals
surrounding community and the built environment. I learned to value my interdisciplinary
education, both through the Honors Program and my silly little major, which allowed me to
constantlyexploresomanyideasacrosssomanydifferentdisciplines.IthinkHonorsandCEP
were two of the best decisions of my life.
Sometime in the middle of my 2nd year, I decided that my focus would be
“Community-basedPlacemaking”(alongwithcommunityengagementanddevelopment).This
focus has really encapsulated the interdisciplinary nature of myinterests.Notonlylookingat
the physical design of a space that makes it a “place”, but also the community, social
structures and processes, identity, history, thatdevelopsourmeaningofaplace.Ilearnedto
createmyunderstandingofcommunityengagementandplacemakinginsomanylensesfrom
the immediate observation of public space to the ethical backings, from how a space is
orientedandconfiguredtotheusesofspace.PlacemakingissomethingthatIstillamcurious
about and expect to continue interrogating in the future.
This ISP showcases the classes that I have taken throughout my last 2 years of
undergraduateeducation.Eachclasswastakenintentionally,beingabletobringpiecesofmy
