CAPTURING MOMENTS

Message from our Headteacher
Chris Connor
As we approach the middle of February, we approach the halfway point in the
year. I still cannot quite believe that we are at this point so quickly. The January
term is always a challenge as the days are shorter and the weather is bleak.
The second spring term is when we start to see the flourishing of new shoots,
blossom on the trees and spring flowers starting to appear. There is a renewed
sense of optimism with spring fast approaching.

year 7 students having crossed the 15,000 achievement

are showing that they are upholding the MARK values

results with their subject teachers. It will be possible to
book these appointments from 6pm on 7 February.
In our assemblies we have been learning about mental
health and how important it is to look after ourselves and
support others. We have discussed how to ensure that we
are using the internet in a safe manner including the use
of AI and how that is developing. We have reminded
students of the importance of being responsible when
they use social media and to remember to only use
kind language when we are part of online groups. To
commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day we discussed
the ‘Fragility of Freedom’ which was the chosen theme
for this year. The students are always very respectful
when we deal with this theme. As part of LGBTQ+
History Month we talked about the importance of being
respectful towards other people’s views and feelings. The
last assembly of this term is always a favourite of ours
because we get to celebrate the community achievements,
including the MARK attributes and values.
In the first week back after half term we are having a visit
from Plumpton College to talk to year 8 about the courses
they offer and careers they connect to.

I was lucky that it was a simple choice, as making art was
just what I had always done and made me feel happy. I

art too, I started selling my art at age 8! What I enjoy
most is the flexibility to engage with the most precious
parts of life. My artwork gives me the excuse to learn

practical processes like printmaking, metal sculpture and
any medium that suits my subject. This Summer I went to
Poland to be the artist in residence for a human cadaver

people get to experience.

It has been great to welcome so many primary schools onto our facilities since the beginning of this

to coach and motivate children from our local primary schools
in our first netball development event. Children from years 3 &
4 came over to learn more about netball. They were coached
in the basic skills, then were tasked to put everything they had
learnt into game play. The sports leaders were excellent in
motivating and imparting their sport specific knowledge to the
youngsters.

Sussex Cricket
Programme
The Sussex Cricket Foundation delivered a
fantastic cricket session with our Year 7 and 8
girls at the end of last term.
This programme was launched to get more girls into
playing cricket and spark an interest in the sport.
The students were working on different activities that
developed their batting, bowling and fielding skills as well
as working on improving their reaction time and hand-eye
coordination.
‘It was really lovely to see all of the students engaged
and working hard in a sport that a lot of them had never
played before’ - Miss Buckley, PE Teacher.
More sessions are planned throughout 2024 so we hope
to see more and more girls taking part in the sport.

Student recruitment panel

Here at Uplands Academy we feel it is
important to include our students in some of the
decisions we make for our school, and a very
important one is appointing staff to support
them.
This term, four students, supported by Mr Richards,
Deputy Headteacher, formed a student panel to interview
the candidates for the role of Assistant Headteacher,
Behaviour and Safeguarding. They then gave their
feedback to the formal panel of Dr Austin, Chair of Local
Governing Board, Ms Robinson, Executive Headteacher
and Mr Connor, Headteacher.
‘This important role required our students to be mature
and thoughtful about the process. We hope that they all
enjoyed the experience and gained valuable insight into
interview processes, questioning techniques, evaluating
performance and feedback practices’ - Miss Taylor,
Head of HR.
Well done to Jenna (Year 7), Holly (Year 8 ), Teddy (Year

The assemblies concluded by considering how Holocaust

to us; acceptance of others, respect of freedom, and

examples of true resilience, of the courage to survive and
speak out in the face of such terror and injustice.
