Male 1…………….19
Female 1………….26
(Students do as told)

v. Review
Prior to our lesson for today, let's first have a review.
What was your topic last meeting ? Yes Kierven?
Our topic last meeting was all about
nucleic acid.
Very good!

So, what is a nucleic acid? Yes Angel? Nucleic acids are naturally occurring
chemical compounds that serve as the
primary information-carrying molecules in
cells.
Excellent! Angel.

What are the two classes of nucleic acid? Anyone

from the class? Yes, Mariko? The two main classes of nucleic acids are
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic
acid (RNA).

Amazing Mariko. Alright! Thank you so much for

your answers. It seems that you still remembered
and have learned from your previous topic. Am I
right? Yes ma’am.

None so far ma'am.

Any questions or clarifications?
School of Teacher Education

B. ELICIT (8 mins)
For you to have a clue on our lesson for today let’s
do this experiment first, I will divided you into 2
groups. Each group will received 1 bowl with ½ cup
of fresh milk,1 cotton swab, 1 sulit pack of
dishwashing liquid and 2 different colors of food
coloring.

Instructions
1. Add one drop of each of the two colors of food
coloring to the milk. Keep the drops close together in
the center of the plate of milk.

2.Find a clean cotton swab for the next part of the

experiment. Predict what will happen when you
touch the tip of the cotton swab to the center of the
milk. It’s important not to stir the mix just touch it with
the tip of the cotton swab.

3.Place a drop of liquid dish soap on the tip of the

cotton swab. Place the soapy end of the cotton
swab back in the middle of the milk and hold it there
for 10 to 15 seconds. observe what will happen.

Okay, what have you observed? Anyone from the

class? Yes Kent? The color Spread and it seems like there
is a mini explosion happened.

Wonderful Kent! Thank you ma’am.

Since milk is mostly water, it has surface tension like

water. The drops of food coloring floating on the
surface tend to stay put. Liquid soap wrecks the
surface tension by breaking the cohesive bonds
between water molecules and allowing the colors to
zing throughout the milk. What a party!

Alright right class you may now go back to your Students do as told.
proper seats.

Anyone from class who can tell me what do you

think is our lesson for today? Yes Darwin? Our lesson for today is all about chemical
reaction.

Brilliant Darwin! Our lesson for today is all about

chemical reaction.
School of Teacher Education
PRESENTATION
Well then, bear with yourself as we will discuss
about chemical reaction

I want you all in class to listen to me attentively

because at the end of this lesson, you are all
expected to attain the following objectives.
Everybody read.
a. Define what is chemical reaction
b. Demonstrate how new substance are
formed by chemical reaction
c. Acknowledge the useful and harmful
effect of chemical reactions in our lives.

C. ENGAGE (5 mins)
Class, When you heard the word chemical reaction
what is the first thing that comes up into your mind? A process in which one or two substances
Yes, Jessa? can be converted into different
substances.

A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the

chemical transformation of one set of chemical
substances to another.

Excellent Jessa!

Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s first have

an activity. This activity is called DROP ME,GOT
ME. I have here a bath bomb and a bowl of water
With the same group earlier all you need to do is
drop the bath bomb to the bowl of water when the
bath bomb is fully melted get the hidden word out of
the water and show It to the whole class. Are you all Yes ma’am.
ready?

(Students do as told)
Let's do it together, now drop the bath bomb!
School of Teacher Education
The hidden word that we got is
Okay! First group can you tell us what hidden word REACTANT.
you got?

Brilliant First group!

A reactant is a chemical substance that is present at

the START of a chemical reaction.
The hidden word that we got is
For the second group! what hidden word you got? PRODUCT.

Amazing second group!

A product are substances that are produced in the

END of reaction.

Okay now stay put on your group as you encounter

more about chemical reaction.

Are you all ready to learn more about chemical

reaction? Yes ma'am.
D. EXPLORE (10 mins)
For our next activity we are gonna be doing an
experiment. This experiment will show how new
substance are formed through chemical Yes ma'am.
reaction.Are you all ready?

Okay without further ado let's get started.

You are now in your group right? Now each group

will received 1 empty plastic bottle, 1 Dishwashing
liquid,1 Large tray, Liquid food coloring,Yeast and 1
spoon. In this experiment you also need to use
Hydrogen peroxide and warm water but for your
safety i'll be the one to pour it.Just inform me if you
need to pour hydrogen peroxide and warm water. Yes ma'am.
Read the instructions carefully. Is that clear class?

You now start making elephant toothpaste. Students do as told

Instructions
Step 1 – Combine two tablespoons of warm water
with one teaspoon of yeast and mix until the yeast
is completely dissolved in the water.
School of Teacher Education

Step 2 – Pour 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide into the

empty bottle.

Step 3 – Add a few drops of food coloring into the

bottle. Take a moment to make a few observations.
What happened when you added the drops of food
coloring?

Step 4 – Next, add a squirt of dish soap into the

bottle. Again, take a moment observe what
happened. Did adding the dish soap appear to have
any effect on the liquid already in the bottle?

Step 5 – Finally, pour the mixture of water and

yeast into the bottle. Watch carefully and observe
what happens.
School of Teacher Education
Results

Okay class as you can see there is like a large

foamy mess that's keep coming out that is because
the yeast contains an enzyme called Catalase that
breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into
oxygen gas and water. The oxygen gas gets
trapped by the soap, and you get a large foamy
solution that squirts out of the top of the bottle!

Any questions or clarification?Yes John?

Nice questionsl John,This demonstrations is called Ma'am why it called elephant toothpaste?
Elephant’s Toothpaste because the chemical
reaction produces a large foamy mess that looks
like toothpaste squirting out of a tube. It is so big
that only an elephant could use toothpaste this
large.

Is there anymore questions? Yes Nicole?

You may try this at home but I highly advice that Is it safe for us to try this at home?
you should have a guidance of your parents or
guardian do not try this alone and also before doing
this activity please put your safety glasses like I did
earlier because hydrogen peroxide can irritate your
eyes.

Do you still have anymore questions?

None ma'am.
E.EXPLAIN (10 mins)
Now you know that Chemical reaction is the change
of one or more substances into other substances
that having different components and properties.

In the second activity I introduces to all you the two

of parts of chemical reaction.
•Reactant
•Product

Again Reactants are the chemical substances which

participate in chemical reactions and forms new
substances and A Products are the new substances
which are formed in the chemical reaction between
the reaction between reactants.
School of Teacher Education

If you are still confused about the difference of this

two Just remembered that Reactant is a substance
that is present at the START of a chemical reaction
and A product is a substance that is present at the
END of a chemical reaction.

Did you know also class that there are also 4 main
types of chemical reaction and This are;

•Combination Reaction.
•Decomposition reaction
•Displacement reaction
•Double-displacement reaction

Let's talk about the first type of chemical

reaction.The combination reaction.

Everybody read!

•A combination reaction is a process in which two or

more chemicals combine to generate a single new Students do as told
compound is known as a combination reaction

Example: calcium oxide and water

Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to

produce slaked lime which is calcium hydroxide,
releasing a large amount of heat.

The second type of chemical reaction is the

decomposition reaction.

Everybody read.
Students do as told
A decomposition reaction can be defined as a
chemical reaction in which one reactant breaks
down into two or more products.

Example;
School of Teacher Education

From the above experiment we can conclude that

the reaction occurred on heating ferrous sulphate
crystals is decomposition reaction which
decomposes to produce Fe2O3, SO2, and SO3.
Since this decomposition reaction is carried out by
heating it is also known as a thermal decomposition
reaction.

Okay! Did you know that there are 3 types of

decomposition reaction these are

Thermal decomposition reaction

•Decomposition caused by heating

Electrolytic decomposition
•Decomposition reaction caused by electricity.

Photo Decomposition reaction

•Decomposition reaction caused by light.

The third type is Displacement reaction

Everybody read! Students do as told

Displacement reaction-The type of reaction in which
part of one reactant is displaced by another reactant
is called displacement reaction. It is also called a
replacement reaction. As replacement of one ion of
reactant takes place by another ion of reactant.

Example:

In this activity, iron has displaced or replaced

another element, copper, from the copper sulphate
solution. This reaction is called the displacement
reaction. Here, copper gets displaced from copper
sulphate solution, which you can see on the iron
School of Teacher Education
nails. The brownish colour is deposited on the iron
nails. Iron took the place of copper in copper
sulphate solution in test tube B. The faded solution
is iron sulphate.

The fourth type is the Double - Displacement

Please read!

Students do as told
Double - displacement reaction-is a reaction in
which the positive and negative ions of two ionic
compounds exchange places to form two new
compounds. The general form of a double-
replacement

Example;

Double displacement reactions occur when a part of

two ionic compounds is exchanged and makes two
new components. The pattern of a double
displacement reaction is like this.

Those are the types and examples of chemical I just wanna ask ma'am from our
reaction.Any questions or clarification?Yes Mariko? experiment earlier which is making
elephant toothpaste.what type of chemical
reaction is that?

Good question mariko. That experiment is a type of

decomposition reaction because Hydrogen peroxide
is mixed with some dish soap (and food colouring for
effect) and then mixed with baker’s yeast mixed with
warm water. The hydrogen peroxide decomposes
into water and oxygen.
None ma'am.
Anymore Questions?

Okay let's continue our discussion but now we will

talk about the usefulness and harmfulness of
chemical reaction to our lives.

Let's start with its usefulness.Anyone from the class

who can tell me what is the use of chemical reaction Chemical reactions change food when
to our daily lives?Yes Kent? cooked, make soap remove dirt, and much
more.

Excellent Kent!
School of Teacher Education

Chemical reactions are one of the most important

types of events in the universe. Through chemical
reactions plants grow, and food is manufactured.

This are the other use of chemical reaction to our

daily lives.

Of course chemical reaction also has its harmful Mining, agriculture and waste disposal
effect.what do you think is the example for this?Yes have caused substantial soil pollution
Janna?

Brilliant Janna.

The presence of heavy metals like cadmium,

mercury and lead can affect soil quality and reduce
the number of micro-organisms that support soil
fertility. The health of soil impacts biodiversity and
the ability of populations to produce food.

Example

As we all know burning of fuel is among the

reactions that pollute the environment because it
produces a lot of harmful gases that affect on
humans and the environment such as carbon,
sulphur and nitrogen oxides. CO2 gas acts as a
greenhouse effect because it prevents the
penetration of the thermal rays produced from the
Earth to outer space.

The spread of cancer tumors increases in the

country that uses coal as fuel because its burning
causes air pollution with poisonous substances that
infect humans with lung cancer. Sulphur oxides
cause respiratory system malfunction and building
corrosion because they are acidic gases. Nitrogen
School of Teacher Education
oxides affect the nervous system and the eye
because they are poisonous acidic gases.

Any questions or clarification? None ma'am.

Since you don't have anymore questions.I want you

all to Gather with your groupmates for the last time

E. ELABORATE (10 mins)

At this time, let us have an activity in order to
measure your understanding of the topic, still the
