I. WORK
Problem 1 (ABDULLAH)
A tow truck pulls a car 5.00 km along a horizontal roadway using a cable
having a tension of 850N. (a) How much work does the cable do on the car if it
pulls horizontally? If it pulls at 35.0° above the horizontal? (b) How much
work does the cable do on the tow truck in both cases of part (a)? (c) How
much work does gravity do on the car in part (a)?
Diagram:

Procedures and Solutions:

GIVEN: FORMULA: W = Fscosθ
F = 850N
s = 5.00km , 5.00km x 1000m/1km = 5000m
SOLUTION:
a. W = (850N) x (5000m) x cos(0°)
W = 4, 250, 000 J ( if it pulls horizontally )

W = (850N) x (5000m) x cos(35.0°)

W = 3, 481, 396.18 J ( if it pulls at 35.0° above the horizontal )

b. W = (850N) x (5000m) x cos(180°)

W = -4, 250, 000 J

W = (850N) x (5000m) x cos(180° + 35.0°)

W = -3, 481, 396.18 J

c. W = (850N) x (5000m) x cos(90°)

W=0
II. ENERGY
Problem 1 (ABDULLAH)
A sled with mass 8.00 kg moves in a straight line on a frictionless horizontal
surface. At one point in its path, its speed is 4.00 m/s; after it has traveled 2.50
m beyond this point, its speed is 6.00 m/s. Use the work-energy theorem to find
the force acting on the sled, assuming that this force is constant and that it acts
in the direction of the sled's motion.
Diagram:

Procedures and Solutions:

GIVEN: FORMULA:
m = 8.00 kg Vi = 4.00 m/s Fnet = ½ m(Vf^2 - Vi^2) / d
d = 2.50 m Vf = 6.00 m/s

SOLUTION:

Fnet = ½(8.00kg)[(6.00m/s)^2 - (4.00m/s)^2)] / 2.50 m

Fnet = 32N
Problem 2 (VENTURINA)
A 5.00-kg sack of flour is lifted vertically at a constant speed of 3.50 m/s
through a height of 15.0 m. (a) How great a force is required? (b) How much
work is done on the sack by the lifting force?
Diagram:

Procedures and Solutions:

This work becomes negative because it is spent on lifting loads.

Problem 3 (VELASCO)
A force of 800 N stretches a certain spring a distance of 0.200 m. (a) What is
the potential energy of the spring when it is stretched 0.200 m? (b) What is its
potential energy when it is compressed 5.00 cm?
Diagram:

Procedures and Solutions:

GIVEN: FORMULA:
F = 800N Ue = ½ kx²
x = 0.200m
Ue = ?

F = kx
k = F/x
k = 800N / 0.200m
k = 4000 N*m

a.) x = 0.200m
Ue = ½ kx²
Ue = ½ ( 4000 N*m) (0.200m)
Ue = 80J
b.) x = 5cm = 0.050m
Ue = ½ kx²
Ue = ½ ( 4000 N*m) (0.050m)
Ue = 5J
III. POWER
Problem 1
A ski tow operates on a 15.0° slope of length 300 m. The rope moves at 12.0
km/h and provides power for 50 riders at one time, with an average mass per rider
of 70.0 kg. Estimate the power required to operate the tow.
Diagram:

Procedures and Solutions:

GIVEN: FORMULA:
θ = 15.0° P = F/v
s = 300m
v = 12 km/h = 3.33m/s m = (70) (50)
m = (3500kg)
F = mg sinθ
F = (3500kg) (9.81) sin 15.0°
F = 8885.898 N

P = F/v
P = (8885.898 N) (3.33m/s)
P = 29590.04034 w or 29 Kw
