4 First-aid measures
ꞏ Description of first aid measures
ꞏ General information:
Diisocyanate vapors or mist at concentrations above the TLV or PEL can irritate the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract (nose,
throat, lungs) causing runny nose, sore throat, coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and reduced lung function (breathing
obstruction). Persons with a preexisting, nonspecific bronchial hyperreactivity can respond to concentrations below the TLV or PEL with
similar symptoms as well as asthma attack or asthma-like symptoms. Exposure well above the TLV or PEL may lead to bronchitis,
bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs). Chemical or hypersensitivity pneumonitis, with flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever,
chills), has also been reported. These symptoms can be delayed up to several hours after exposure. These effects are usually
reversible.
Immediately remove any clothing soiled by the product.
Remove breathing apparatus only after contaminated clothing have been completely removed.
In case of irregular breathing or respiratory arrest provide artificial respiration.
Symptoms affecting the respiratory tract can also occur several hours after exposure.
ꞏ After inhalation:
Remove victim from exposure to fresh air. Keep person at rest. Provide oxygen if person is not breathing.
Supply fresh air or oxygen; call for doctor.
In case of unconsciousness place patient stably in side position for transportation.
ꞏ After skin contact:
Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly.
If skin rash or irritation occurs, seek medical advice.
Remove all contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
An MDI study has demonstrated that a polyglycol-based skin cleanser (such as D-Tam TM, PEG-400) or corn oil may be more effective
than soap and water.
ꞏ After eye contact:
Immediately flush opened eyes with water for 5 minutes, then remove contact lenses if present, continue flushing for at least another 15
minutes.
Get medical attention.
ꞏ After swallowing:
If victim is unconscious; never give anything by mouth.
Do NOT induce vomiting.
If victim is conscious, rinse out mouth with water.
Get medical attention
If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep victim's head below hips to prevent aspiration of liquid into lungs.
ꞏ Information for doctor:
ꞏ Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed No further relevant information available.
ꞏ Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

ꞏ Advice for firefighters
ꞏ Protective equipment:
If employees are expected to fight fires, they must be trained and equipped as stated in the OSHA fire brigades standard (29 CFR
1910.156).
As with any fire, wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective gear that are NIOSH approved.

ꞏ Exposure controls
If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below
recommended exposure limits.
ꞏ Personal protective equipment:
ꞏ General protective and hygienic measures:
Keep away from foodstuffs, beverages and feed.
Immediately remove all soiled and contaminated clothing.
Wash hands before breaks and at the end of work.
Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.
ꞏ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
ꞏ Breathing equipment:
Sufficient ventilation in pattern and volume should be provided in order to maintain air contaminant levels below recommended
exposure limits.
Use a NIOSH approved air-purifying organic vapor respirator if occupational limits are exceeded. For emergency situations,
confined space use, or other conditions where exposure limits may be greatly exceeded, use an approved air supplied
respirator. Observe OSHA regulations (29CFR 1910.134) for respirator use.
ꞏ Protection of hands:
The glove material has to be impermeable and resistant to the product/ the substance/ the preparation.
Selection of the glove material on consideration of the penetration times, rates of diffusion and the degradation
