I-Choose the correct answer:
1. The use of a thermoplastic with a high degree of polymerization makes the
fabrication process more (difficult- easer)
2.Using a polymer with(high-low) MFI is more suitable for the operation of mold
filling process.
3. The (higher-lower ) the MFI , the greater the strength and heat resistance of
the desired plastic.
4.Before (yield elongation-ultimate elongation) point , reversible deformation of
thermoplastic polymer takes place, while (yield elongation – ultimate elongation)
is the total elongation just before fracture.
5.Ductile thermoplastic polymers have a (higher-lower) module of elasticity than
elastomers
6. A brittle material will deform reversibly to a very (small -large ) amount and then
fracture comparing ductile and elastomeric polymers

7.Tightly cross linked polymers have(high-low)strength and (high- low )MFI

comparing to loose cross linked polymers.
8.LLDPE has (higher – lower ) hardness and dimensional stability than cross linked
polymer.

II-Put right or wrong and correct:

1.The weight average molecular weight is higher than the number
average molecular weight of the same polymer.
2.Polymers that have excessively low MFI may causes fabrication
problems like stringing and flashing, while using polymers that have
excessively high MFI causes poor dispersion of additives during the
polymer processing.
3.Necking phenomena appears after reaching the yield point of a
thermosetting polymer
4.Thermosetting polymers have no yield point but have ultimate
elongation only
5.Elastomers have low modulus of elasticity so they have good
elastomeric properties
6. The tensile strength of the polymer rises with increase in molecular
weight and reaches the saturation level at some value of the molecular
weight
7.Polymers may be in liquid state depending on their molecular weight
and degree of polymerization.

III- problems:
1.We have a HDPE sample containing :
4000 chains with molecular weights between 0 and 5000 g/mol
8000 chains with molecular weights between 5000 and 10000 g/mol
7000 chains with molecular weights between 10000 and 15000 g/mol
2000 chains with molecular weights between 15000 and 20000 g/mol
Determine the number and weight average molecular weights and the
degree of polymerization
2.Calculate the degree of polymerization if 6,6-nylon has average
number molecular weight of 120000 g/mol
Mwt of hexamethylene amine is 116 g/mol
Mwt of adipic acid is 146 g/mol , Mwt of water is 18
3. The linear polymer 6,6-nylon is prepared by combining 1000 g of
hexamethylene diamine with adipic acid .
How many kilograms of adipic acid are needed , and how much 6,6-
nylon is produced , assuming 95% efficiency.

4.The stress applied to PET wire was 6.37x104 N/m2 and the strain was
3.08x10-4.Find the modulus of elasticity for PET in MPa
5.HDPE cylindrical rod has a radius R of 0.9mm and a length L of 81 cm.
A force F of 6.2x102 N stretches it axially. What is the stress in the rod
in N/m2? And what is the elongation of the rod under this load if the
modulus of elasticity is 1x109 N/m2.
