CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
1.1 Introduction
Water and electricity is both essential in our life. It is considered to one of the basic

necessities of human. A man without food can survive for weeks but a man without water won’t

last for three days. Water builds up the human body for almost 60% and it serves many

functional processes like regulating our body temperature, supplying oxygen to different organs,

brain function, cleansing digestive tract and such. It is common to be the universal element that

defines life. The lack of drinking water in some of the remote areas in the Philippines is not new

to us and it is the obligation of the researcher to accommodate this kind of problem.

As water raises its popularity to be the most important necessity in human, electricity also

grabs its opportunity with the help of new and advance technology to elevate its demands. Daily

activities and works nowadays are govern by advance technologies and devices. From washing

clothes in the washing machine to heating freeze lasagna to oven, we cannot eliminate electricity

from the equation. Electricity also define how advance a civilization is. Thanks a lot to Benjamin

Franklin, we are experiencing the great potential benefit of it. For decades, electricity impacted

us great things we could imagine.

The demands for water and electricity rapidly increases as the population also grow

higher for a period of time. This causes a mass shortage of these resources, affecting the different

aspects of economy and health sectors. Insufficient drinking water supply and the sudden power

interruption is very common to our country because of its geography and number of natural

disaster that struck local communities every year.

Our country is home of natural disaster, more than 20 typhoons are being recorded every

year and the amount of this catastrophic events causes a large of destruction to our natural

resources. Typhoon can destroy a massive dam that is source of drinking water through floods

and can abolish power lines by the its strong winds. Resulting to huge damage of properties,

power interruption, and shortage of drinking water. A big problem to local communities and

residents of it.

As researchers, we are concerned for this disturbing events. The capability of each family

to cope up with their basic necessities in an alternative way is our responsibility. So we come up

with an alternate solution for coping up to the problem every community are facing. We consider

that our country is prone to rain nowadays, so we use it as a great tool to get electricity and

drinking water out of it. A similar reservoir that is use in dam and irrigation system will be use in

order to collect and store rain that eventually be use as a source of electricity and drinking water.

The research will use scrap methods and resources to build an alternate model for the

improvisation of the said study. This study will be the base for some future researcher as they

conduct similar study like this. Overall, researchers aim to know the effectivity and capability of

the said study to produce electricity and safe drinking water.

ELECTRICITY AND PURIFIED WATER

The Conceptual Framework, focuses on the capability of the said roof rain-filtrator

reservoir as source of electricity and drinking water. This study will use scrap and common

materials in order to produce electricity and drinking water out of it. The study also will discern

the ability on both sunny and rainy days of the roof rain-filtrator reservoir to produce electricity.

The input will be the scrap materials that is available in the vicinity and the rain water that will

give the power to the innovation. These inputs will be in process to make an innovative house

roof rain-filtrator reservoir by making the three essential parts which are the hydroelectric
generator, artificial reservoir in the roof, and water purifier. The desired output of the said

process will be the electricity and purified water all at once.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the capability Innovative House Roof Rain-Filtrator (Filter

and Generator) Reservoir as Alternative Source of Electricity and Drinking Water.

Specifically, researchers must seek to answer the following questions:

1. Can the House Roof Rain-Filtrator Reservoir produce electricity and purified water?

2. Is House Roof Rain-Filtrator Reservoir had the capability to perform efficiently in

producing electricity and drinking water at the same time?

3. Does the Rain-Filtrator can produce electricity and drinking water even in sunny

days?

1.4 Hypothesis
H01. There is no significance on the ability of Rain-Filtrator to produce electricity and purified

water.

H02. There is no significance on the performance of the Rain-Filtrator and its capability to

produce electricity and drinking water at the same time.

H03. There is no significance on the ability of the Rain-Filtrator to produce electricity and

drinking water even in sunny days?

1.5 Significance of The Study

This study will benefit the following:

The Community. This study may serve as a solution for some communities who are having a

hard time on getting basic necessities like drinking water and electricity in time of rainy days and

even sunny days.

The Students. This research will give an idea and concept of how we can get electricity from

rain and might help them to be guided in their similar research studies.

Structural Purposes. This study will give engineers to develop a new way to produce drinking

water and electricity through the exterior or interior of a building or establishments. Making an

artificial reservoir on a rooftop will help them think to make similar studies in order to solve the

insufficient source of drinking water and electricity.

The Environment. This research study will help the reduction of carbon dioxide emission from

power plants and the avoidance of infected water due to improper filtration and waste

management.

Future Researchers. This research study will serve as a guide for those researchers who will

conduct the same studies.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

This study will determine the capability of the house roof rain-filtrator reservoir to

produce electricity and drinking water. The material that the researcher might use is scrap or

common to the locality. This study will deliberately cover on how to improvise Hydroelectric
and Water Filter as a unified study. The researchers use ideas from the said concepts and apply it

innovatively using common and scrap materials from local community. The limitation of the

water filter depends on the quantity and quality of the water; more water may result in cloudy

colored water, which causes more repetition of the cycled process of filtration. Also, the

hydroelectric generator's limitation depends on the potential and kinetic energy; if the water

produces low kinetic energy, there is a possibility that it cannot produce a certain amount of

electricity to produce power generation. Enough water supplies are highly needed and it will be

anchored by the rain and the built in reservoir on the roof that will collect and store them until it

is finally needed for consumptions.

1.7 Definition of Terms

For further understanding of terms that are used in this study, operational definitions are

provided in this section.

Activated Charcoal refers to a fine, odorless, black powder came from the pressurized and

heated woods and lumbers. It will be use in the study as one of the ingredients and materials to

be use in purifying and filtering the water from the reservoir.

DC Motor refers to a rotary electrical motors that converts direct current electrical motors and

vice versa. This will be use to convert the mechanical energy from the water to electrical energy

to produce electricity.

Electricity refers to a form of energy that is widely used for different activities worldwide. It is

use as a power to make things work. In the study, it will be one of the product besides purified

water.
Hydroelectricity refers to the use of the water movement to produce mechanical energy to

electricity. This will be use as a guide to produce electricity through the use of renewable

resources. It is one of the safest generator of electricity that do not emit greenhouse gases.

Purified Water refers to a water that undergoes chemical and mechanical processes that

removes the impurities from it. This will be one of the product of the study.

Reservoir refers to a place where water is being collected and store to supply it for consumption.

In this study it will be serve as the collector of rain and the storage for the later use of the said

water. It will be located at the rooftop of the house.

Turbine refers to a rotary mechanical device that extracts energy from a fluid flow that will be

converted into a useful works or purposes. This will be use to transfer the mechanical energy

from the water to the DC motor to convert it to electricity.

Water Filtration refers to a process in which a certain mechanism removes impurities from the

water. In this study, the researcher will use improvise purifier in order to filter the water that

came from the artificial reservoir.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
History
Humankind’s innovative creativeness have been using the nature for its own

survivability, harnessing its full potential to the extent. For many centuries, people from different

places are using hydropower, making it 16 percent of the world’s source of electricity. The first

known modern water turbine that was created by British-American engineer James Francis in the

late 19th century was known to be also the first hydropower to be a source of electricity (Nunez,

2019).

In 2000 B.C. in Greece, the first documented water treatment was recorded by boiling the

water and also the sand and gravel method of filtrating. The first water filters use for domestic

application was first invented by Joseph Amy, with the use of wool, sponge and charcoal, he

leads the industrialization with water as the main star of the show (Baker and Taras, 1981).

Maintenance and Cost

According to Sreekumar (2018), it very expensive to maintain and install a hydroelectric

dam. We should consider the place to be free from risk factor and the geography should easy to

be artificially landscape. Also the operation of hydropower system cost varies by the type and
size of the system, type of turbines and such. It is estimated to cost between $ 40 and $

110/MWh for large hydropower plants and $45 and %120/MWh for small plants.

In filtration, it also expensive to maintain and install water filtering station. All in all, the

estimated cost of 1 to 20 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system water

station will run between $ 250,000 and $2 million. While a 1000 to 3000 GPM ZLD will cost

$25 to $50 million and it is quite expensive for a commoner.

Hydroelectric Generator
Hydroelectric energy uses the basic principle of transferring of mechanical energy to

electrical energy. The waves and flow of the water from a river bank or artificial reservoir

increases the pressure to exert much mechanical force to the turbine. It also relies on the power

of the gravity (Topping, 2021). According to Sandru (2010), people may scrap materials like

plastic spoon, used disk, magnets, and coil in order to build an improvised hydroelectric

generator.

Energy Conversion
The DC Motor or also known as Direct Current Motor are widely used as an energy

convertor. It allows the exchange of mechanical energy from a water-generated turbine to an

electrical energy (Deziel, 2019). This principle will be use in the study, researcher may use and

improvised DC motor or scrap DC motor that can be found in junk appliances. The turbine will

be connected to the DC motor with the help of a moving gear.

Water Purifier
The purification of water allows the removal of different contaminants like chemicals,

biological contaminants, suspended solids, and gases. There are three common type of method in

filtering water, first is the use physical processes like filtration, sedimentation, or distillation.

Second is biological processes including sand filters and using active carbon. Lastly, the use of

chemical processes like flocculation, chlorination, and the use of ultraviolet light (Popescu,

2017). The researcher might use both the physical and biological process in order to purify the

water.

Improvised water purifier by Yumul (2011), stated that common materials like activated

carbon from charcoal, jumbo cotton balls, sanitized pebbles, water bottle, and sand, we can build

an efficient and effective water purifier. It also indicated that the number of filtering process

makes the water edible and clear. The researcher might use the same concept in filtering the

water from the reservoir.

Activated Charcoal

Making an activated charcoal is easy. Materials needed are just charcoal, lemon juice or

calcium chloride, and distilled water for rinsing. Take a chunks of charcoal that was heated in a

high temperature and put it on a mortar, grind it with the pestle. Use a strainer to remove huge

particles then add lemon juice or calcium chloride to the mixture and leave it for 24 hours. Lastly

rinse it three times using a distilled water and dry it up (Nubie, 2018). This method will be

adapted by the researcher regarding to its affordability.

Reservoir
Man-made reservoirs like artificial lakes are important sources of electricity. This large

bodies of water uses the concept of storing the water and releasing it with much pressure causing
it to flow rapidly in the turbine creating a mechanical energy that later on to be converted in to an

electrical energy (Stauffer, 2009). The idea of putting an artificial reservoir in the roof is not

new, one of the industrialized establishments in UK uses this concept to provide water and not

both electricity and water (Flexcreate, 2017). This will apply by the researcher in order to have a

source of electricity and purified water even sunny days due to the storing of water in the

reservoir.

Roof Rain Catcher

There two recognized season in the Philippines, wet and dry. The climate of the

Philippines is characterized by relatively high temperature, high humidity, and abundant rainfall.

The mean annual rainfall varies from 965 to 4,064 millimeters annually. In determining the

average rain your roof can collect, the researcher should know the surface area of the roof and

multiply it to the average mean of rainfall amount annually in the said place (PAG-ASA).

RELATED STUDIES
The ‘Grayl Water Purifier’
The Grayl Water Purifier is an easy to carry filter that lets users to drink from any sources

of water in just 15 seconds. It is very useful in travelling or hiking for protection against

contaminated water. It works by filtering bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, and other chemicals

out of the water. It has three layers where the first layer catches bacteria and germ; second layer

uses carbon from a natural coconut husks to prevent odors and unwanted flavors in your water;

last layer helps to clean this handy bottle with or without the help of the user (Pendrill, 2016).

Improvised Hydroelectric Generator

The researchers use scrap materials like use copper coil, plastic spoons turbine, magnets,

and disk in order to generate electricity from the running water. It uses the electromagnetism and

the magnetic induction to produce electricity by spinning the rotor which is the magnet to the

foiled coil which is the stator connected to the load. The said study is successful to produce

electricity that is efficient and environmental friendly (Cana, 2013).

Rain Gutter POWER #1

The innovator harnesses the capability of rain gutter in the roof to produce electricity

from it. He manages to create a moving gear to facilitate the downward force of the water from

the pipe. He uses a 12 V DC Motor to convert the mechanical energy to electrical energy. The

researcher also added lubrication in the moving gear to increase the torque of the rotator of DC

motor. The reseacher also chose the right turbine having a wide and deep curve on it to obtain

the maximum kinetic energy. The researcher successfully produced electricity using the rain

from the rain gutter of the roof (Quint Builds, 2019).

Hydroelectric Generator Purifier

The young researchers combine the idea of having an electricity and purified water in

their study. They were able to utilize the materials that is only available in the vicinity to make

their own purifier and DC motor. They use copper coil as a stator and magnets s a rotor that is

both attached to a used disc. They use activated charcoal, pebbles, stones, plastic bottle sands,

and net as a water purifier. They also facilitate used spoons as a turbine. The study said to be

efficient if the water is repeated to be filter in order to obtain clear water and produce enough

energy. They were able to produce electricity and water at the same time (Bisoy, 2018).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
4.1 Result

This chapter represents the results and discussions after making the said Improvised

House Roof Rain-Filtrator (Filter And Generator) Reservoir as Alternative Source of

Electricity and Purified Water.

These tables and diagrams represents all of the trials and the specific outcome of the

said improvisation. These will serve as a guide for discussion and conclusion of the study.

Terms used are carefully analyzed and was designate based on the range of the study’s field.

The tables below show the results of the improvisation.

4.2 Discussion
CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Summary
5.2 Limitations of the Study

The study’s limitation are the

5.3 Conclusion

5.4 Recommendations

We recommend to upgrade the materials used in the improvisations. Instead of small DC

Motor, try to expand the power source and energy converter to acquire large quantity of energy

and water for domestic use.

We can also recommend to increase the possible source of electrical energy and drinking

water. This type of study is most suitable for tropical countries or those countries who rains a lot.

To make an upgrade try to use the snow or wind as the source to extract water and electricity

from it for those countries who snows a lot.

Another recommendation is to make a mini reservoir with a less amount of both financial

and material resources that could support the whole house needs of electricity.

Last recommendation of the researchers to the other researchers who possibly wants to

conduct a similar study is to test the quality of the water to the professionals and measure the

amount of the electricity with a proper equipment.
