The Experiment

Introduction

In today's generation, the consumption of electricity is important to human lives.

For the reason of the usage of electricity to run the world today, electricity has become a

necessary part of everyone's lives. Everyone uses electricity to power their homes,

workplaces, and even for their very own devices and types of machinery. In fact, there are

billions of people in the world who have access to electricity. This shows that electricity

is indeed an important thing for us to live in today's world. The usage of everyday

electrical materials also has its source of energy. Well in the world today humans use

different variables to generate electricity, because over the past years and centuries,

humans innovated, and discovered new kinds of sources to gain the electricity we use in

our daily lives, these electricity-generating sources can vary in different ways, especially

on how they are invented by different scientific pioneers, and it can be eco friendly or by

the use of fuel and their very own environment. So our research paper wants to achieve a

new different way to generate electricity by the use of basic scientific knowledge. In our

experiment, we researchers explored how to gain a new electricity source by using lemon

and water. This scientific approach aims to give everyone an eco-friendly power source to

revolutionize the sustainable energy we currently have and our technology has to offer in

today's generation. Offering a new greener and more accessible alternative source to the

traditional methods humans use. We, researchers, will try to prove this hypothetical

3
experiment by using the chemical properties of lemon and the conductive capabilities and

potential of water.

Statement of the Experiment

The purpose of this research is to know if using salt solution and lemon can be an

alternative way to generate enough electricity to power our homes and the machines we

use in our daily lives. This could change the way we utilize and get energy, offering a

clean and eco-friendly sustainable solution. The experiment provides more ideas to those

who are seeking a new alternative when it comes to generating electricity or power.

● Do the molecules of the salt solution and lemon generate conductivity?

● Will it ever change the way we get energy from?

● What are the expected challenges and limitations in sustaining the power output

of the salt solution and lemon?

● What existing discovery inspired our curiosity in the exploration of salt solution

and lemon as a potential alternative to generate power?

● How does the current state of global energy motivate us to do this experiment?

4
Significance of the Experiment

The significance of the study is for those who are seeking new ways to find a new

energy source to generate power. It includes whether the salt solution and lemon are that

effective compared to the other common alternatives we use to generate power.

To the Students. This experiment can help students to be more aware of where

we get energy from, especially on how it affects our environment, in a way that gives

more students motivation to seek new discoveries in this field.

To the People. This experiment gives everyone an idea of why knowing where

we get our energy from is important, especially in our world which is suffering from

pollution due to harmful sources to generate electricity.

To the Future Researchers. Those who are seeking change in how we generate

power will benefit from the results of our experiment because it will give them an idea of

why focusing on cleaner energy sources is preferable compared to the common

alternative ones.

5
Scope and Delimitation

This study is to determine if the salt solution and lemon are either a good source

of energy to generate enough power or a bad source of energy for the reason of not

having enough energy to power the daily needs we use in our everyday lives.

Review of Related Literature

Relation of the Source of Our Energy to the Climate Change

According to Kepa Soluan and Emilio Cerda, renewables will be key to a

low-carbon future. To meet the 2 °C climate goal, the share of renewable energy in the

final energy consumption must increase from 19% in 2017 to 65% by 2050 [1]. By then,

the share of renewable energy in electricity generation should be roughly 85%, up from

an estimated 25% in 2017. (Kepa Soluan, Emilio Cerda, ScienceDirect 2019)

The physical impacts of climate change are among the challenges that renewables will

have to face, as they have implications for the reliability and performance of the energy

system [2,3]. Initial studies on this topic addressed the vulnerability of the energy sector

from a demand perspective, but there are a growing number of studies analyzing impacts

on supply as well [3]. Transmission lines and other areas along the value chain of the

energy sector can also be affected [4,5]. (Kepa Soluan, Emilio Cerda, ScienceDirect

2019)

6
One of the reasons why the energy sector has received so much attention in the

literature is because of the long lifespan of energy infrastructure [6]. Within the energy

sector, renewable generation is the focus of most studies, since its main resource is

directly linked to climate variables such as precipitation, temperature, irradiation, or wind

[7]. Water is a key variable, as its availability not only affects hydroelectric power plants

but also any generation plant that depends on water for part of its process, including

thermal generation [8] or even carbon capture and storage [9]. (Kepa Soluan, Emilio

Cerda, ScienceDirect 2019)

Lemon in Producing Electricity

Grapefruit, oranges, limes, and other citrus fruits contain citric acid, an electrolyte

that conducts electricity. Electrolytes contain free ions, which gravitate toward a source

of opposite charge and a source of like charge. If you insert a pair of electrodes in the

pulp of a lemon or other citrus fruit, the electron exchange between them can produce a

charge. (Pittman, Davis, 2021)

Challenges in Researching a New Alternative Source of Energy

One of the biggest concerns in the field of renewable energy is power generation

depending on natural resources that are uncontrollable by humans.

7
For example, solar powered electricity is generated only when sunshine is available and

turns off at night; wind energy also depends on the availability of wind, so if the wind

speed is very low, the turbine will not turn, and this results in zero power flow to the grid.

On the other hand, too much wind can damage the generator and therefore a delicate

balance needs to be

maintained to keep a consistent generation of energy. The uncertainty in energy

production in renewable energy technologies is making integration more complex. (Meet

A. Moradiya, 2019)

Consistently high power quality is needed to ensure stability and high efficiency

of the network. The quality of the power supply allows the system to work well with high

reliability and lower costs. On the other hand, poor power quality can have major adverse

effects on the power grid as well as industrial processes. It can lead to high costs and

equipment failure. Power quality problems include frequency disorder, voltage/current

harmonics, low power factor, voltage variation, and transmission line transits. (Meet A.

Moradiya, 2019)

Materials and Methods

Design

The research design used in this experiment was entitled “Salt Solution and

Lemon as an Alternative to Generate Enough Power”. We used a physical design which is

by the use of an illustration board as a surface to the materials that we are going to use in

the experiment.

Research Instrument

For our research instrument, we used specific materials to execute our experiment

using “Salt Solution and Lemon as an Alternative to Generate Enough Power”.

Data Collection Procedure

In our process of gathering the data, we used a 5-watt light bulb to determine if

our salt solution and lemon were enough to generate the energy to power the 5-watt light

bulb that we used. The results can be either enough or not enough to power the 5-watt

light bulb.

Materials:

● Lemon

● 1 1/2 tbsp. Iodized Salt

9
● Water

● Wire

● Razor Blade

● 5-Watt Light Bulb

● Light Bulb Receptacle

● Glass

● Screw

● Popsicle Stick

● ⅛ Illustration board

Step-by-Step Procedure:

1. Gather all the materials needed.

2. Use the Illustration board as a surface to do the experiment.

3. Peel a small portion of the insulation of the wire.

4. Connect the wires to the light bulb and secure it by screwing it.

5. Twist the wire around the screw.

6. Insert the copper wire into the razor blade and secure it by twisting it.

7. On a glass, make a salt solution by adding water to the salt and mixing it using the

popsicle stick.

8. Attach the screw into the salt solution.

10
9. Stick the razor blade in the middle of the lemon.

10. Put the light bulb on the receptacle and tighten it.

Results

In this section, it includes the findings and discovery of our experiment. So in this

experiment, we executed two trials. The first one is by the use of nails as an energy

conductor to our variables which are the lemon and salt solution. The second one is by

the use of a metallic blade as an energy conductor to our variables which are also the

lemon and salt solution. Here, we can find the results on what really happened after

conducting both trials of the experiment.

Trial 1: Usage of Nails

After using the nails as a conductor of electricity coming from the lemon and salt

solution itself. The water molecules pull the sodium and chlorine ions apart so they float

freely, increasing the conductivity. These ions are what carry electricity through the water

with an electric current. Salt water creates a subtle amount of electricity. We discovered

that the energy generated by the variables is not enough to power a 5-watt light bulb.

11
Trial 2: Usage of Metallic Blade (Razor Blade)

The researchers had trouble figuring out why it didn’t work because according to

a research, a salt solution makes a small amount of energy. As for the razor blade and

lemon, they also create electricity. The acid in the lemon acts as an electrolyte, and the

blade functions as a conductor. Unfortunately, after the process, we discovered that the

variables we used in this trial also did not work, for the reason that it also lacks the

energy to power the 5-watt light bulb.

Discussion

Summary

Our experiment “Salt Solution and Lemon as an Alternative to Generate Enough

Power” of Grade 11 students of section Airbus from WCC Aeronautical and

Technological College S.Y. 2023 - 2024 from SIP Experiment Group 5 discovered that

the usage of salt solution and lemon as an alternative source of energy is not enough to

power a 5 watt light bulb. This means when relating it to the global usage of electricity, it

is not enough nor a good option to replace the current sources of electricity in our world

today. We certainly think that current eco-friendly energy sources like Solar Power

12
Energy, Wind Power Energy, Water Power Energy, etc… are still usable in this current

world instead of using salt solution and lemon.

Recommendations and Conclusions

This experiment concludes that the usage of salt solution and lemon as an

alternative source of energy still needs to be improved and studied further by future

researchers and scientists. Because we learned that even though our experiment in using

these variables did not work, we still think that maybe in the future others can still

discover and figure out how we can use these variables as a way to power our world in

the future. We also concluded that this experiment has not only confirmed that using a

lemon and a glass of salt water is not enough to power a 5-watt light bulb but has also

introduced that it can be possible. The limitations of our experiment such as lack of needs

in our materials, time, and knowledge, should be something to be acknowledged as they

offer opportunities for refinement in future purposes.
