Shortcut Formula: Area Of Shaded Region Of Circumscribed Circle In

A Regular Octagon

April Ahlyne E. Caderao

INTRODUCTION

According to Kyungmee Park and Aarnout Brombacher in their article published

in the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction entitled “The role of

Mathematics in the Overall Curriculum”, Human intellect and logic are fundamentally

based in mathematics, which is also essential to our efforts to understand the outside

world and ourselves. Mathematics promotes logical thinking and mental rigor and is a

useful method for developing mental discipline. Additionally, comprehending

mathematics is essential for learning other academic disciplines like physics, social

studies, and even music and art.

While many learners excel in subjects like geometry, arithmetic, and numeracy, some

learners find problem-solving to be so challenging that they feel overburdened, upset, or

frightened while they are doing anything math-related. One of the topics in mathematics

are the different kinds of polygons and how to get their areas. With formulas that are

lengthy and time consuming. Octagon is one of them. There are undoubtedly many real-

world uses for octagons, many of which might not even be obvious at first inspection.

Due to its immediately recognizable shape, features of balance, and symmetry, the

Octagon is particularly significant in traffic laws, sports, architecture, and design.

The researcher digs out a new information that we can easily find the area of the

shaded region using only the side of a regular octagon. Researchers come up with a

study to help other students in solving areas of the shaded region of circumscribed

circle in regular octagon to an easier and faster way. So, getting away from a long

process in finding the area of circumscribed circle is now at hand.

FRAMEWORK

A polygon having eight sides and eight vertices is called an octagon. A regular

octagon shape has eight equal sides and eight equal angles. All the sides are of

equal length, and all the angles are of equal measure. The formula for calculating the

area of regular octagon given the side is :

A = 2 x 2 ( 1+ √ 2 )

When an octagon's sides and interior angles are both equal, the shape is said to

as regular. Regular octagons have equal interior angles by definition. Since there are

eight of them, in total, it can be concluded that each interior angle should be:

1080°
Value of each interior angle = = 135°
8

The regular octagon's central angle θ, which is formed by the angle formed by

two successive diagonals connecting opposite vertices, is called the central angle.

Around the common octagon center (where all the diagonals meet), there are eight

central angles in total. Accordingly, each one should be:

360°
θ= = 45°
8
The last two angles in the internal triangle, which is made up of the side of the

octagon and two successive diagonals, are both 67.5 degrees. These are, in fact,

because the octagon's diagonals are also its axes of symmetry, bisecting its interior

angle. This sort of octagon is the most symmetrical because all of its sides and angles

are equal. In a regular octagon, each internal angle is 135 degrees, and each side is the

same length. Here is a general illustration of an eight-sided regular octagon.

135°

45°

The formula for calculating any octagon's interior angles is (n-2) x 180, where n is

the number of sides, which in the case of an octagon is 8, equals 1080 degrees. This

equation is applicable to all polygons, not only octagons.

A circle that traverses the octagon's eight vertices can be drawn, just like you

would for any other regular polygon. The circumcircle or circumscribed circle is this. This

circle's center coincides with the octagon's center. Similarly, the octagon's diagonals

equal the circumcircle's diameters. Typically, circumradius refers to a circle's

circumradius.

45°

The length of the sides, and the radius of the circumcircle are connected. The

right triangle depicted in the following picture, which has three sides—the circumradius

and half the octagon side can be used to find these relationships. Basic trigonometry

can be used to determine:

x
R= 2sin
θ
2

Where x is the side length and θ is the central angle. The octagon is not the only
regular polygon for which these expressions hold true, as it turns out. By making the

center angle θ equal to 45°, one can get specific equations for the regular octagon.
These expressions are:
x
R=
2sin 22.5 °

FINDINGS

Finding the shortcut formula of the area of shaded region in circumscribed circle

in a regular octagon. Researchers assign different length of the side of the regular

octagon from 1 centimeter to 10 centimeter. They solved the area of the shaded region

of a circumscribed circle in a regular octagon with the existing formula 2 ( 1+ √ 2 ) x2 for

octagon and π r 2 for circle. Furthermore, they compare the formula of the two plain

figures and look for their common. Then they solve for the constant value by rewriting

the given formula and putting common factors outside the parenthesis. Investigated

formulated a new formula new relation in finding the area of the shaded region in

circumscribed circle in a regular octagon by substituting the radius of a newly found

formula. Derivations for the shortcut formula in finding the area of circumscribed circle in

The researcher discovered a new shortcut formula derived from a constant

relation to the area of a regular octagon and the circumscribed circle. By the help of

0.534 which is the constant value, we can now easily get the area of the circumscribed

circle in a regular octagon. With the given measurement side even without the help of

the radius of a circle. By multiplying, we can now get the area of a shaded region in a

circumscribed circle of a regular octagon, and instead of using the long method formula

which is

πr
2
- 2 ( 1+ √ 2 ) x2. The researcher conducted a new formula that is shortened int o this x 2

(0.534).
CONCLUSIONS

The researcher concluded the new found shortcut formula was making the

students time lessened in solving the are of the shaded region of a circumscribed circle

in a regular octagon. By the help of the constant value 0.534, that has been calculated

we can easily get the area of the shaded region. Even if given only the measurement of

the edge or the side of a regular octagon; even without the help of the radius of the

circle. Through multiplying the constant value 0.534 into the length of the edge of a

regular octagon.
ABSTRACT

Recently a researcher has conducted a research with regards on creating a

short-cut formula in finding the shaded region in a circumscribe circle on a regular

octagon using the relationship between the two formula of the area .The researcher find

the constant value of the existing formula in finding the shaded region, the purpose of

finding the calculation is to make an easy and less time consuming formula for those

students who has difficulty in getting it the area of the shaded region in a circumscribed

circle. The result also revealed that by multiplying the squared side of the regular

octagon to the constant value, the area of the shaded region can now be obtain.

Students who find the long subtraction method difficult, can now easily get the shaded

region by the help of the constant value (0.534).
