Self-Directed Learning and its Significance

1. Self-directed learning is a learning process that governs how a student or any category of

learner pursues his/her way of obtaining the desired information. Doing so requires

various steps a student may need to consider before setting off in his/her endeavor of

research. To become successful at obtaining certain information, a learner must reflect

upon various essential aspects of him/herself:

 The first most significant aspect is whether the learner is ready to accept the

information he/she is seeking. This requires an in-depth self-evaluation including

their current state of being. To fulfill the requirement for the first aspect, the

learner must possess the ability to control him/herself without the need for

guidance. He/she would also require a structural attitude along with strict

discipline. Optimism is also a big part of accepting new materials as it assists the

host to openly receive suggestions. Lastly, the learner must have the ability to

professionally relay any type of information to others so that the information is

clear and effective.

 The second most significant aspect is the ability to set specific goals related to

grasping information. This is required so that the student can keep track of exactly

where he/she standson seeking information. Without setting proper goals, an

individual may be setting him/herself for derailment while in the learning process.
 Additionally, indulging oneself in the vast sea of information is another

noteworthy aspect. In a self-directed learning environment, students are left to

seek out whatever information they need themselves. Due to the lack of a

moderator being involved, the student is forced to seek all information at their

own expense. Therefore, it is highly suggestive that self-directed learners find as

much information as possible during their research to be prepared and apply

themselves by knowing in-depth about thetopic in focus.

 Lastly, the learner is required to self-reflect on his/her learning progress. To

consider him/herself a successful independent learner, he/she will have to look

within him/herself to understand if he/she truly is on the right path. The best

method of accomplishing this last step is by connecting with his/her teacher,

professor, or instructor. A student must also learn how to accept feedback or

suggestions from his/her instructor or even peers during peer assessment sessions.

The lack of self-reflection may leave a student without a proper understanding of

where he/she stands in the process.

2. As a student, I would consider my two biggest strengths as being optimistic and

beinghonest. Optimism allows me to keep an open mind and take in as much information

as possible without placing any bias. It also allows me to analyze the same information

with clarity and decipher any false evidence. When applying optimism to my work, it acts

similarly. With an open mind, I canelevate my horizon in creativity and deliver facts that

have little to no distortion. On the same note, being honest allows me to accept my flaws
for what they are and focus more on how to break away from the issues. It also helps me

avoid any form of dishonest behavior in regards to a writing assignment or any sort of

project which requires a substantial amount of information. In conclusion, optimism and

honesty are not just a part of who I am as a student, but who I am as a person in general;

therefore, the practice comes to me very naturally.

3. As a student, I would consider teamwork and humor to be my two biggest weaknesses.

To be honest, I have always considered myself to be somewhat of an introverted

individual. Maybe that is why I do a much better job while working on a project by

myself than with others. Although I have participated in multiple group activities in the

past and received exceptional grading from my teachers or instructors, I have always felt

more comfortable doing something on my own. I feel that when I work on my own, I can

work at my own pace and do not feel pressured to take responsibility for anyone else’s

task. Humor is also something I have struggled with my entire life due to multiple

traumatic events. Though people tell me that I have a humorous personality, I do not

agree. For some, humor is like eating breakfast; it is quite natural. However, for me, it

has always been an uphill battle. When younger, I had difficulty in telling apart when

someone was joking from when they were being serious. I still suffer from this issue, but

occasionally. Although, humor may not cause too much of an issue during self-directed

learning sessions, not being comfortable in working as a team will. It may cause some

discomfort at first; I may not be able to focus on the task. But, over the working period, I

will have to adjust and put in the effort to not let it distract me. In other words, the lack of

wanting to work in a team may stir some internal issues like anxiety which I would have
to bring attention to and counsel myself to manage the situation. To summarize, both

issues are quite serious and I believe they have affected me my entire life; however, I do

not allow them to overpower my will to succeed.

4. One great strategy I now focus on is obtaining knowledge, not just good grades. In my

prior schooling, the majority of my focus was on earning good grades. Although I have

learned a great deal, I feel that if I have applied this strategy before, I not only would

have obtained good grades but also a huge amount of knowledge as well. Another

strategy I can use is somewhat related to the prior; it applies more focus on progress

rather than performance. With this strategy, I will be able to measure where I stand in

terms of moving forward in my learning process rather than worrying about how I am

achieving my goal. The third strategy I can use is quite challenging for me, yet the most

beneficial in my opinion; it requires getting involved with others who are on a similar

path as myself. Although the latter strategy goes against one of my weaknesses, I believe

utilizing this strategy will one day turn my weakness into my biggest strength. By

working with others who are on a similar path as me, I would not only be helping myself

but also increasing the chances of discovering something new.

As a learner, I plan on holding myself accountable for my growth by utilizing whatever

skills I have attained such as a solid ability to read and write and elaborate on my

thoughts along with organizational skills to keep myself in check to make sure that I do

not stray off my path of obtaining information. With that, I will be able to multiply my

performance by combining the strategies I have included in this paragraph with the ones
that I have mentioned previously. I look forward to applying these strategies in my future

learning process to achieve higher education.
