ASSIGNMENT FOR MODULE 5 LESSON 2

FORENSIC3/L

QUESTION:
1. What is a high level of alcohol in the blood?

At a blood alcohol level of 0.3% and higher, complete loss of consciousness

may occur and a blood alcohol level of 0.5% and higher may even cause death.
Drinking excessive alcohol in one occasion may cause alcohol poisoning which
if not treated promptly may be fatal.

2. What blood alcohol level is drunk?

Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is a commonly used measure of alcohol

intoxication, also known as drunkenness. It is typically expressed as a
percentage of alcohol per volume of blood. For example, in the United States
(US), a BAC of 0.08 (0.08%) would translate to 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100
mL of blood.

3. Can alcohol be detected in a urine analysis?

Alcohol itself in urine has a relatively short detection window — usually less than
a day. But alcohol byproducts, such as ethyl glucuronide (EtG), can be detected
in a person’s urine for up to three days after they have consumed their last drink.
Other lab tests might also test the urine for ethyl sulfate (EtS).

4. What is the normal level of alcohol in urine?

On average, the level of alcohol in urine is about 1.33 times the amount of
alcohol in the blood. So, to convert a urine test result into an equivalent blood
alcohol level, it's necessary to divide the urine alcohol level by 1.33.

5. How accurate is urine test for alcohol?

And since alcohol can sometimes remain detectable in the urine for up to two
days after it is ingested, it is an accurate indicator of a person’s alcohol
consumption. But the amount of alcohol present in the urine is typically about
1.33 times greater than the amount of alcohol found in the bloodstream.

6. How accurate is blood test for alcohol?

Blood testing can show heavy alcohol use. However, timing plays a significant
role in the accuracy of blood alcohol testing. In a typical situation, blood alcohol
tests are only accurate six to 12 hours after someone consumes their last
beverage. Blood tests can help identify excessive alcohol use and possible liver
damage.

7. Can alcohol be detected in a hair sample?

If you've consumed alcohol within the detection window, you will see alcohol in
a hair follicle test. Another drawback to urine drug testing is that it's possible for
an individual to provide a synthetic urine sample. This can't happen with hair
testing since a medical professional will be the one who collects the sample.

8. Does hair dye affect alcohol test?

Hair alcohol tests cannot distinguish between abstinence and light to moderate
drinking. But they can identify frequent heavy drinking. It’s important to keep in
mind several points. Bleaching, dying, perming or frequently shampooing may
reduce the accuracy of alcohol hair tests.

9. How do you test your breath for alcohol?

The preliminary breath test or preliminary alcohol screening test uses small
hand-held breath analyzers (hand-held breathalyzers). These units are similar
to evidentiary breathalyzers, but typically are not calibrated frequently enough
for evidentiary purposes.

10. What can cause a false positive breath alcohol test?

Medication – Over-the-counter medicines and prescription drugs may contain
alcohol. If you have taken medication that has alcohol as an ingredient, it can
lead to a false positive breath test.
Health conditions – Acid reflux, gastrointestinal reflux disease, and other
medication conditions can increase the BAC levels while taking a breath test
because of the acid in the esophagus or stomach.
Food – Sometimes what you eat can lead to a false positive. For example, bread
and other baked goods include yeasts that also create a residential amount of
alcohol that remains after the baking process. Common types of foods that can
cause false readings also include Honey Buns, ripe fruits, protein bars, hot
sauces, sugarless gums, and dishes cooked in alcohol.
Breath fresheners – While you may use a breath mint or mouthwash to disguise
any trace of alcohol, breath fresheners can cause you to fail a breath test. While
mouthwash contains alcohol, mints and gum contain sugar substitutes that can
lead to a false positive result.
