Description

Spring Cardigan is a hip length cardigan knitted with one strand of hand dyed
speckled 4 ply yarn and one strand of bare (undyed) 4 ply yarn. Both strands
are knitted together to give a gauge of 20 sts and 28 rows per 4 inches which
is on a par with a DK Weight yarn.

The subtle effect of knitting these two yarns together is to give a colour wash
effect which is subtle but very appealing. It also helps to minimise the
pooling effect that you can sometimes get with a hand dyed yarn.

The pattern could also be knitted using one strand of plain undyed yarn and a
selection of mini skeins to add extra colours and use up other scraps of 4 ply
yarn the benefit of knitting both the fronts and the back to the armhole at the
same time helps to allow for this.

Please read through all the instructions before beginning to knit and as usual it
would be advisable to knit a tension swatch to ensure that your gauge is correct.

Button hole bands and neckline

Using 4mm needles and starting at the lower right front.
Pick up 80 (82, 88, 88, 92, 98, 106, 114, 118) sts along the right front to
first neck decrease.
Work button hole band by purling the next row so that you end at the
base of the right front and begin knitting in k4, p2 rib for the next 2
rows. On the next row work the button holes along your pattern:
K4, p2 tog, yo, *k4, p2, k4, p2tog, yo* rep from * to * to end at top of
right front.
Work one row in pattern and at the base of the right front, begin the icord
bind off.
Icord bind off
Knit cast on 3 sts, put these 3 sts back onto left needle and *k2, k2tog
tbl. Put the right hand three sts back onto left needle*
Repeat from * to * until you have your last three sts on your needle at
the top of the right hand side. Leaving these three sts on your 4mm
circular needle:
Pick up 25 (25, 25, 32, 33, 33, 36, 36, 40) sts along neck edge, pm.
Pick up 30 (32, 32, 36, 38, 38, 40, 42, 44) sts along back neck edge, pm.
Pick up 19 (19, 19, 26, 27, 27, 30, 30, 34) sts along neck edge, pm.
Pick up 80 (82, 88, 88, 92, 98, 106, 114, 118) sts along the left front.
Working the left front button hole band 80 (82, 88, 88, 92, 98, 106, 114,
118) sts only, purl one row.
Work button hole band to correspond with the right hand band by
knitting in k4, p2 rib for 4 rows.
This will leave you at the bottom edge of the left hand button hole band.
Begin your icord cast off purlwise which is carried out in the same way
as the knitted icord bind off but done purlwise. Cast on the initial three
extra sts purlwise, purl the first two sts and purl the last of the three
together with the first st of the button hole band and continue the icord
cast off purlwise until you reach the top of the original right front three
sts and purl these three sts together and cast off the last st by pulling the
yarn through the loop as usual.
Sew in all the ends and sew on your buttons to correspond with the
button hole band.
Congratulations, you have completed the spring cardigan.
