applicable for the equipment/material covered in this TMSS. The vendor/manufacturer
may propose equipment/material conforming to equivalent Industry Codes and
Standards other than those quoted hereunder without jeopardizing the requirements of
this TMSS, in which case he shall submit a copy of the proposed standards and shall
submit a written proof that the proposed standards in all significant respects are equal
to or better than those specified. Acceptability of any alternate code or standard is at
the discretion of National Grid Saudi Arabia.

4.0 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

4.1 General

4.1.1 The cable shall be of manufacturer's standard design but shall meet or
exceed the requirements of this Specification in all respects.

4.1.2 Manufacturer’s drawings, as required by 01-TMSS-01 shall show the

cross section of the bonding/earthing cable together with all pertinent
dimensions. Any variations in these dimensions due to manufacturing
tolerances shall be indicated.

4.1.3 The services conditions referenced in 01-TMSS-01 shall be regarded

as the basis of design criteria.

4.2 Rating.

Rating of the bonding and earthing cable shall be (Uo/U = 0.6/1 kV) for power
cables rated up to 132 kV and (Uo/U = 1.8/3 kV) for 230 & 380 kV power
cable.

4.3 Materials

4.3.1 Conductor

a. The conductor material shall be plain annealed copper, stranded,

circular, class 2 as per IEC 60228.

b. Conductor construction shall be as specified in Table 1 below.

Table 1: Conductor Construction.

Cross Section (mm2) Minimum No. of Strands

95 19
120 37
150 37
240 37
280 61
300 61
500 61

4.3.2 Insulation

a. The insulation material shall be XLPE (Cross-linked

polyethylene) in accordance with IEC 60502-1.

b. The nominal thickness for XLPE shall be as specified in Table 2

below.

11TMSS12R0/OAA Date of Approval: April 13, 2014 PAGE 4 OF 14

TRANSMISSION MATERIALS STANDARD SPECIFICATION 11-TMSS-12, Rev. 0

Table 2: Nominal Insulation Thickness

Corresponding to Cross Section.

Cross Section Nominal Thickness (mm)

(mm2) 0.6/1 (1.2) kV 1.8/3 (3.6) kV
95 1.1 2.0
120 1.2 2.0

240 1.7 2.0
280 1.8 2.0
300 1.8 2.0
500 2.2 2.2

The average of the measured thickness, rounded to 0.1 mm shall

not be less than the nominal thickness, and the minimum
measured thickness at any point shall not fall below 90 % of the
nominal value by more than 0.1 mm, i.e:

tm ≥ 0.9*tn – 0.1

Where:
tm : is the minimum thickness, in (mm);
tn : is the nominal thickness, in (mm);

4.3.3 Outer Sheath/Jacket.

In addition to the applicable requirements of 01-TMSS-01 (latest revision), the

following packing and shipping instructions are applicable.

6.1 After Routine & Sample tests at the manufacturer's Work, both ends of cable
shall be sealed to prevent the ingress of moisture during transportation and
storage. Cable ends shall be properly secured to the reel.

6.2 The cable shall be delivered without splices on nonreturnable standard size
reels/drums in lengths of 1000 meters (maximum), sufficient sturdy
construction for the reel is required to provide physical protection for the cable
shipment (for transportation from the manufacturer's Works to National Grid
Saudi Arabia Stores and subsequent use on site) and to facilitate field handling
and long term storage. Wood logging shall also be secured with steel straps.

6.3 Reel Markings

6.3.1 Cable reels/drums shall be marked in Arabic and English languages

legible and indelible letters giving the following details:

a. Project name.
b. Contract number.
c. Cable voltage and conductor size.
d. Type of cable (Bonding & Earthing Cable).
e. Length (m) and weight (kg/km) of cable on reel.
f. Gross weight (wright of cable and reel).
