DAY: Monday 3rd

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards Students understand how heat are transferred from one body to another, and
some of its practical uses in our daily lives

B. Performance Standards Students should demonstrate understanding of heat and heat transfer

C. Learning Infer the necessary conditions for heat transfer to occur

Competencies/Objectives

e. Concepts • When energy is transformed, such as thermal energy, heat is always
produced. Heat is an energy that is transferred from one object to
another object due to the difference in their temperature. It is simply
called as ‘energy in transit’. Heat transfer is related to change in
temperature. Temperature refers to the relative hotness or coldness of
an object. An instrument used for measuring and indicating temperature
is called ‘thermometer’.
• Conduction takes place between objects that are in contact with each
other. Materials that conduct heat well are called thermal conductors
(good conductors) such as metals like copper, iron, aluminium, steel,
silver, brass, lead etc. Whereas materials that conduct heat poorly are
known as thermal insulators (poor conductors) some examples are non-
metals like wood, rubber, plastic, glass, paper etc.
• Convection is the process in which heat is carried from place to place by
the bulk movement of a fluid against its surroundings. Fluids are
materials that can flow, and they include both gases and liquids. The
movement of steam or the motion of boiling water in a pot are examples
of convection.
• Radiation is a method of heat transfer in the absence of matter or
through space. Objects with dark surfaces absorbs more heat than
objects with bright surfaces. When you stay under the sun, your body
feels hot because it absorbs energy from the sun.

E. Elaborate Application: How is heat and heat transfer important in our daily lives?

“We use heat in cooking our foods.”

“We use heat in warming ourselves in cold weathers.”
“The sunlight travels in Earth’s atmosphere through radiation.”
F. Evaluate Activity: Fill in the blanks!
Direction: Fill in the blanks with the necessary information. Look for the
words in the word box.

Heat is a thermal energy that flows from a hot to cold

object. Temperature tells how hot or cold an object is. Heating a pot
of water is an example of conduction. Metals & copper are good
conductors because they allow heat to flow through, while plastic &
rubber are examples of insulator because they do not allow heat to
flow. As the pot boils, convection occurs because hot air rises from
the pot. Heat from the Sun reaches the Earth’s surface through
radiation.
4. Extend 1. Give at least two applications of conduction, convection, and radiation
inside your home.

2. Give at least 3 examples of phase change.
