The Wayang Kulit (wayang-play, shadow, ghost, or puppet; Kulit-leather or skin) is a shadow play with

two-dimensional leather puppets. Wayang Kulit play originated from two epic stories, the Ramayana
and the Mahabharata. This is mounted in the center of two long rows of banana trunks. The dalang, the
puppets, the lights, and the gamelan orchestra, placed at the back of the cloth, complete the elements
of the Wayang Kulit.

Puppet

The two-dimensional puppets are certainly the highlights during a wayang kulit performance. Each
puppet is a unique Indonesian artwork.

Dalang

The dalang, the manipulator-narrator, sits cross-legged at the back of the screen or cloth (kelir). The
Dalang gives the movement and voice to the puppets, which correspond to the actors, and also provides
a signal to the orchestra that accompanies the play.

Musician

The musicians play a significant role in the gamelan performance. They accompany the dalang in
delivering the play. The dalang signals the musicians if music is needed in the scene.

Lights

Lights may be in the form of using a traditional open coconut oil lamp (damar) or an electric bulb that
serves light behind the white screen to give shadow to the puppet.

Wayang Wong or Wayang Orang

The performers act in the roles of puppets on the stage. This is considered one of the major Asian
classical dance-drama forms of theater.

Wayang Golek

The puppets are shaped like wooden dolls with rounded heads and arms. This is an imitation of a human
actor who imitates a puppet. These are dressed in traditional costumes. This play is famous in the area
of the Sundanese people (West Java)

Wayang Topeng or Wayang Gedong

This is different from the other plays because of its focus on the story, which narrates the activities of
noblemen who lived in East Asia. This is performed by men who wear masks referred to as topeng. The
Balinese Wayang uses puppets like the one from East and Central Java which are also leather cutouts.
The Wayang Wong and Wayang Topeng are very popular in Bali.

Wayang Klitik

The wooden puppets are flat, carved in shallow relief, and painted, not dressed. The arms are made of
parchment.

Nang Yai is a form of shadow play in Thailand. Nang means “skin,” and Nang Yai means “large shadow
puppet.” The puppets are made from buffalo or cow skin. Singing through chant is used for narrating a
story.

This is performed in open spaces like a lawn or village. Like the Indonesian Wayang Kulit, the Nang Yai
has the following: white screen, bonfire light, Thai music band, dubber, and puppets.
