Number is divisible by… Example:

11 if the difference of the sums of al- 946 (9+6) – 4 =11 equally divided
ternating digits is divisible by 11 or, by 11 so 946 is divisible by 11.
subtract the last digit from a number 286; 28 – 6 is 22, which os divisible by
made by the other digits. If that num- 11, so 286 is divisible by 11.
ber is divisible by 11 then the original
number is, too.
12 if the number is divisible by both 3 648; by 3; 6 + 4 + 8 = 18 and 18 ÷ 3 = 6
and 4. by 4; 48 ÷ 4 = 12
Divisibility Rules
What does the word divisible mean?
If a number is said to be divisible by another number if their quotient is a
whole number with no remainder.
12 ÷6=2 quotient
Since, the quotient has no remainder; we can say that 12 is divisible by 6.
Let’s find out more about divisibility.
Number is divisible by… Example:
2 if it is an even number or its last 12 is an even number and therefore,
digit is 0,2,4,6, or 8. divisible by 2.
3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 36 has the digits 3 and 6.
3. 3+6=9
9 is divisible by 3. Therefore, 36 is di-
visible by 3.
4 if the last two digits are a multiple of 112 has 12 for its last two digits.
4 or if the last two digits are 00. 12 is a multiple of 4, therefore, 112 is
divisible by 4.
5 if its last digit is 5 or 0. 10 ends in 0 and therefore, is divisible
by 5.
6 if the number is divisible by both 2 114 is an even number and has the
and 3. digits 1, 1, and 4.
1+1+4=6
6 is divisible by three. Therefore, 114
is divisible by 6 since it is divisible by
both 2 and 3.
7 if when you take the last digit, dou- 672 has 2 for its last digit, 2 x 2 = 4;
ble it, and subtract it from the rest of subtract it from the rest of the digits.
the digits, the result is divisible by 7. 67 – 4 = 63.
63 is divisible by 7, therefore, 672 is
divisible by 7.
8 if the last three digits form a num- 9, 640 has 640 for its last three digits.
ber that is divisible by 8. 640 is divisible by 8. Therefore, 9, 640
is divisible by 8.
9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 4, 518 has the digits 4, 5, 1, and 8.
9. 4 + 5 + 1 + 8 = 18 which is divisible by
9. Therefore, 4, 518 is divisible by 9.
10 if the number ends in 0. 180 ends in 0 therefore it is divisible
by 10.
136, 000
There are two numbers having a digit 2 in the hundred thousands
278,000
place, determine which of the two numbers is greater. Look at the
245, 000 ten thousands digits of the two numbers. Note that 7 > 4.

145, 000 Therefore, 278, 000 > 245, 000.

167, 000

Step 3: Compare the remaining numbers.

278,000 Look at the ten thousands digits of the remaining numbers.

Since 3 < 4, and 4 < 6, it can be said that 3 is also less than 6.
245, 000
Hence, 136, 000 is the least among the remaining numbers. Also,
136, 000 since 4 < 6, 146, 000 < 167, 000.

145, 000

167, 000

Below is the arrangement of the numbers:

278,000

245, 000

167, 000

145, 000

136, 000

Remember!

 A place value chart may be used when comparing whole numbers.

 When comparing two whole numbers with different numbers of digits, the number
with more digits is greater.
 To compare two whole numbers with the same number of digits, compare the digits
with the same place value, starting from the highest place value.
 Use the symbol < for “is less than,” > “is greater than,” and = for “is equal to.”
 When ordering numbers, compare the numbers two at a time.
Remember!

 A place value chart is divided into periods, with each period having three place
values.
 The place value and the value of a digit in a number depend on the position of the
digit in the number.
 The digit 0 serves as a place holder in a number.
 Numbers can be written in the following forms: standard form, word form, and
expanded form.

Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers

Comparing numbers with the use of place value chart

Example 1:

Compare the distance in meters of James’ House and Anna’s House from School.

Thousands Units
Hundred Ten
Thousands Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

James’
House 1 4 5 0 0 0
Anna’s
House 1 3 6 0 0 0

See that the two numbers have the same digit in the hundred thousands place. Compare
the digits in the ten thousands place. Since 3 is less than 4, 136, 00 is less than 145, 000.

Symbol: 136, 000 < 145, 000. Therefore, Anna’s House is nearer to the school than James’
House.

Comparing 3 or more numbers in increasing or decreasing order.

Example 2:

Step 1: Make a vertical list of all the numbers to be arranged.

Step 2: Compare digits of the same place value, starting from the highest place value.

Place Value through Billions

Each digit in a number has a place value. The concept of a place value can help you
understand how large the digits are. You can see how the value of a digit depends on its
place in the number by using a place value chart.

PLACE VALUE CHART IN BILLIONS

Period Billions Millions Thousands Units

Place
Hundred Ten Billions
Hundred Ten Millions Ten
Hundred Thousands
Hundreds
Tens Ones
Value Billions Billions MillionsMillions Thousands
Thousands

Digit
1 5 7 9 2 3 3 3 0 0 0 0

Notice that the digits are grouped in threes. Each group of three digits is called a period. The
place values and periods can help you in reading and writing numbers.

Writing the numbers in three ways:

Standard Form: 157,923,330,000

Word Form: one hundred fifty-seven billion, nine hundred twenty-three

million, three hundred thirty thousand

Expanded Form: 100,000,000,000 + 50,000,000,000 + 7,000,000,000 +

900,000,000 + 20,000,000 + 3,000,000 + 300,000 + 30,000

For numbers written in standard form and word form, groups of digits are separated by
commas based on their periods. This makes reading large numbers easier. Notice that the
expanded form of a number shows the number as a sum of the values of all its digits. In a
number, 0 can be used as a placeholder. Thus, even if the digit 0 has no value, it can be used
to increase the number of digits of any number.
