 PRE-TEST
TRUE or FALSE

1.Qalitative researches focus on the recurrence of data.

2.Qualitative researches aim at revealing the nature of

different perspectives or experience.

3.The meanings attached to the participants experiences are

not important in qualitative research.

 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

It is a type of research that aims to gather

and analyse non-numerical (descriptive)
data in order to gain an understanding of
individuals ‘ social reality,including
understanding their attitudes,beliefs,and
motivation.
CHARACTERISTICS of QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

• THE RESEARCHER IS THE INSTRUMENT

Qualitative data are collected trough interviewing
participants,observing verbal and non-verbal behavior,and
examining documents,records,and archives.

• THE PARTICIPANTS’ MEANINGS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT

One of the most common criticisms of qualitative
researches is its subjectivity.Some argue that unlike quanti-
tative research,qualitative research directly influenced by the
researcher’s impressions,perceptions,and personal biases
regarding the topic being studied.
• QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS EMERGENT BY DESIGN
Creswell (2014) adequately explains why the
qualitative research process is emergent ‘the initial research
plan cannot be tightly prescribed;and all phases of the process
may change or shift after the researcher enters the field and
begins to collected data.This is one of the distinctions of
qualitative research.

• GETTING DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES

. Qualitative researchers are not limited to a single
data source.They gather different forms of data-from
interviews,focused group discussions,observations,archival
reports,and documents,etc.
• QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS HOLISTIC

Qualitative researchers attempt to develop a “complex

picture of the problem or issue under the study”(Creswell
2014).One of the major purposes of this approach in
scientific inquiry is to provide field focused,interpretive,and
detailed descriptions,analysis,and interpretation of the
participants’ multiple perspectives and their settings.
STRATEGIES OF INQUIRY IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
There are many types of qualitative research.Briefly
described are the five common strategies of inquiry in
qualitative research.

• PHENOMENOLOGICAL RESEARCH
A type of qualitative inquiry in which the researcher
focuses on the human experiences about a specific
phenomenon as describe by the participants (Creswell,2022).

• CASE STUDY

In this type of qualitative research,the researcher explores

in depth a specific individual,event,or process through the lens
of “cases” bounded by time and activity.
• ACTION RESEARCH
A qualitative research that aims to provide solution to
problems within an institution or organization.Although it
can be done quantitatively,most action researches are
qualitative.

• ETHNOGRAPHY
A qualitative inquiry that looks at an entire group that
shares a common culture to obtain an understanding of their
shared beliefs and practices.

• GROUNDED THEORY
This is a type of qualitative research that does not
begin from a specific theoretical framework (Leedy and
Ormrod,2016).
STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Selecting a particular approach in research is not “one sizes fits all”.It is
important to acknowledge that while qualitative research has a lot of strengths;
It is also has some limitations that researchers should be aware to use it
appropriately.

STRENGTHS
1.Qualitative research provides an in-depth description of
the nature of certain experiences,relationships,events,settings,
processes or people;

2.This enables a researcher to gain a full understanding of

new insights on a specific phenomenon through various
methods (e.g. interviews + abservation + documents analysis);

3.It is effective on capturing the complexity of the

phenomenon being studied;
4.it is allows the participants to better participate in the data
gathering process
4.it is allows as they can

the conduct of the research.
• LIMITATIONS

1.Since the data is collected from a smaller group,results cannot be easily

generalized to the larger population.However,researchers must be reminded that
qulitative research is focused on getting an in-depth understanding of a phenomenon
rather than generalizing them;

2.It is more difficult to analyze due to more stringent requirements in building

results (e.g aside from the need to transcribe and code the responses,researchers must
also be trained to do thematic analysis),and maintaining and assessing the validity of
the data.Thus,qualitative research is more time-consuming.

3.Participants,due to various resons,may hide or control their emotions due to fear

of being judged,etc.There are also concerns on how to ensure the validity and
reliability of the data obtained from people during interviews (ex. are the participants
not hiding something?).Thus,the researcher must be well-trained in doing interviews
and observations to ensure the validity of qualitative data;
4.Data generated from this research might overwhelm the researchers.Researchers
must be ready to face voluminous data in qualitative research.Interview transcriptions
and documents analysis might be overwhelming.Proper preparationis needed before
conducting qualitative research;and

5.Since the researcher serves as an important instrument in qualitative researches,

results might be exposed to too much subjectivity from the research.Researchers must
know how to separate personal emotions and biases while doing qualitative research,
especially during data gathering and analysis.
