Read the sentences below. Identify the meaning of the underlined words used in
the sentence.
1. Dying from an infection was common until modern medicines were developed
that could stop the spread of disease in the body.
3. The measles vaccine is one of the immunizations that is recommended for all
children.
2. Motivation:
Showing a picture scenario during the COVID-19 pandemic then the teacher will
ask questions about it.
3. Presentation
Motive questions:
Do you know what are the communicable diseases and how these diseases
infected us, especially children like you? Today we are going to read a text about
communicable diseases. Are you ready?

2. What are the different communicable diseases?
3. What are the symptoms?
Communicable Disease
A communicable disease is transmitted from one person or animal to
another directly or indirectly. A communicable disease may be caused by prions,
viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, or helminths. Examples of communicable
diseases in children include common cold, covid-19, Chicken Pox, Herpes
Simplex, Measles, Influenza (“flu”), hepatitis, and Intestinal parasites, among
many others. Some diseases can be prevented by vaccinations; others do not
have a vaccine. Examples of diseases which can be prevented by vaccination
include measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis, and some
types of hepatitis.
Some diseases do not have a vaccine or the vaccines may be still under
development, for example, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and Ebola Virus Disease. Some
disease may not have a specific treatment.
Parents, guardians and teachers and are responsible for the prevention of
the spread of infection in children. Common measures for the prevention of
infection include immunization of children and adults caring for children, hand
hygiene, prevention of exposure to blood and body fluids, taking appropriate
measures for a sick child in a school setting.
C. Post Reading A. Answer the following questions (the teacher will write the answer on the
board)
1. How many percent of children ages 5-9 are infected of dengue?
2. How many cases of dengue were reported on November 2019?
3. How many cases of diphtheria was reported on October 5?
B. Discussion
Let’s read the following sentences.
a. Based on the report of Department of Health (DOH), 23% of the infected
dengue cases are in the group of children ages 5-9.
b. There are 400 000 cases of Dengue last November 2019.
c. For diphtheria, the Department of Health has reported 197 cases with 47
deaths through Oct 5.
-If there are 400 000 cases of Dengue, how many children ages 5-9 are infected?
-How are we going to get the answer?
-If there are 197 cases o diphtheria and 47 of it died, what is the mortality rate?
-Giving another activity to check the pupils’ knowledge about percent, base and
rate.
C. Activities
Each group will be given text to read about the different communicable
diseases. They will use different way of presenting the text, it can be thru choral
reading, dialogue, news report, etc.
D. Generalization
What are the different communicable diseases?
How can we prevent getting infected?
E. Application
The teacher will play a short video clip about dengue. Then she will ask
questions to the pupils.
1. Who among you or in your family have experienced to be infected with
dengue?
2. What happened?
3. What should we do then to stop the spread of the disease?

V. Additional Activities Create a simple awareness message material on prevention of identified
communicable diseases. You can choose thru song, poem, slogan, poster, news,
vlogging or tiktok.
