PRINT MATERIALS
1
Basically, in the field of learning and research education, students usually use two
kinds of materials or sources of information that manifest and strengthen the context’s
credibility. These are the print and non-print materials. In this lesson, the print source
will be discussed first.
3
A print source is exactly as its name suggests - material that has been printed and
can be reproduced in a hard copy. Examples of print sources are books, magazines,
scholarly journals, and newspapers.

Let’s Explore
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by
severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new strain of virus
first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019.

COVID-19 is known to target a person’s respiratory system. Infected patients may

exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, and in some cases, muscle
pain and sore throat. Some patients may also be asymptomatic.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) has characterized
COVID-19 as a pandemic due to the exponential increase of the number of cases in more
than 100 countries.

On March 16, 2020. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte placed the entire Philippines
under a State of Calamity amid the threats posed by COVID-19.
Exactly 100 days have passed since the first confirmed COVID-19 case was
announced in the Philippines on 30 January 2020, with a 38-yearold female from
Wuhan testing positive for the novel coronavirus. On the same day, on the other side
ofthe world at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, WHO activated the highest level of
alertby declaring COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern.

The Philippine government mounted a multi-sectoral response to the COVID-

19, through the Interagency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases
chaired bythe Department of Health (DOH). Through the National Action Plan (NAP) on
COVID-19, the government aims to contain the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its
socioeconomicimpacts.

The Philippines implemented various actions including a community

quarantine in Metro Manila which expanded to Luzon as well as other parts of the
country; expanded its testing capacity from one national reference laboratory with the
ResearchInstitute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) to 23 licensed testing labs across the
country; worked towards ensuring that its health care system can handle surge
capacity, including for financing of services and management of cases needing
isolation, quarantine and hospitalization; and addressed the social and economic
impact to the community including by providing social amelioration to low income
families.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been working with Ministries of Health
worldwide to prepare and respond to COVID-19. In the Philippines, WHO country office
in the Philippines and its partners have been working with the Department of Health
and subnational authorities to respond to the pandemic. The country level response is
done with support from the WHO regional office and headquarters.

Let’s Elaborate

A. Found (F) or Not Found (NF).

Write FOUND (F) if the statement below is found in the text you have just read and
NOTFOUND (NF) if is is not found. Write your answer on the space provided after each
statement.

1. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by

severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new strain
ofvirus first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019.
2. On March 20, 2020. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte placed the entire Metro Manila

transmission of infection, mitigating the impact in high risks communities and
confined settings, as well as ensuring the uniform enforcement of non-
pharmaceutical interventions that are already in place. ______________________________
4. The lifting of the community quarantine will not have substantial social and
economic impact and thus no need of heightened effort to control transmission
of infections through rigorous contact tracing, isolation of cases, quarantine of
contacts while ensuring timely and adequate treatment to save lives will
continueto be the less important public health measure. ________________

Lesson NON-PRINT MATERIALS
2

According to Collins Dictionary, non-print materials are published in a format other

than print or paper. Take a printed copy of newspaper for example. The earliest it can report
a story is one day later than the occurrence of the event due to printing and delivery. Online
news on the other hand, gives reports as they happen. Non-print is more interactive because
it allows the readers to see other related stories through links at the side. It is also more
convenient especially for e-book readers, it can hold up to 200 books.
This kind of material gives the comfort and effortless activity to the reader. This
is even less time consuming because it is accessible anytime and anywhere.

Let’s Recall

Here are also some images of the non-print materials:
