Assignment #2
Due: December 22, 2021 Wednesday 17:00

Attention:

• Present your findings in an easy-to-read and well-arranged report. Organization of the

report will be graded to be 10 points
• Please include your Maxima codes and graphics
• You have to submit your homework report in PDF format using the link given in the
course’s page .
• The name of the pdf file to be uploaded should only consist of the student's number.
• Write also your name, surname and student number on your report.

QUESTIONS

1)

(a) Find the Fourier series of the function f (t)= 2 sin(t – π/3)

(b) Consider the Fourier series of the following square wave sq(t)
−1 −   t  −0
sq ( t ) = 
1 0  t  
sq ( t + 2 ) = f ( t )
In class we calculated its Fourier series. sq(t) has fundamental period 2π, but it is also a function
of 4π. Calculate the Fourier series of the sq(t) regarding the period of 4π. Compare your results
and the results calculated in the class.

(c) Considering the Fourier series for sq(t), compute the Fourier series of the each of the
following functions without evaluating any of the integrals for the Fourier coefficients. State
also the fundamental period of the functions.

(i) sq ( t −  / 4 )
(ii) 1 + 2sq ( 2 t ) T
(iii) Plot the main function and its Fourier series using first five terms in the same
Figure in wxMaxima for Parts (i) and (ii).

(d) Find the Fourier series of the following function g(t). Hint: what is g (t ) in terms of the
Fourier Series for sq(t))

  
 t −  t 
g (t ) = 

 − t  3
t 

sq ( g + 2 ) = f ( t )

2) (a) Expand the function shown in Fig. 1 into a Fourier series in three ways:

Figure 1: Function to be expanded into Fourier series.

1. full-range expansion containing a constant and sine and cosine terms,

2. half-range expansion containing sine terms only and
3. half-range expansion containing cosine terms only.

(b) Plot the main function f(x) and its Fourier series expansion containing first 4 nonzero
terms obtained in the three ways. Comment on your results.

(3 ) Find the steady-state oscillations of y + y + y = r (t ) with r(t) as given.

−1 −   t  0
r (t ) = 
1 0  t  
r ( t + 2 ) = r ( t )

Sketch r(t) and y(t) in the same Figure using wxMaxima. (Hint: A similar system output is
calculted in class)

4)

(a)Verify (by substitution) that the following functions are solutions of the one-dimensional
heat equation for a suitable value of c.

(i) u = e− c t cos ( x ) (ii) u = e− t cos ( 25 x )

One dimensional heat equation: =c
t x 2

(b) Verify the following function is a solution of Laplace Equation

u = x4 − 6x2 y 2 + y 4

 2u  2u
Laplace equation: + =0
x 2 y 2

(c) Verify that the function u ( x, t ) = a ln ( x 2 + y 2 ) + b satisfies Laplace's equation and

determine a and b so that u satisfies the boundary conditions u = 50 on the circle x 2 + y 2 = 1
and u = 0 on the circle x 2 + y 2 = 100 .
