Narrator:
It is said that thousands of years ago, the land of Parahyangan was ruled by a king and a queen
who only had one daughter. The daughter's name was Dayang Sumbi. She is very beautiful and
intelligent, unfortunately she is very spoiled. One day while weaving on the palace veranda,
Dayang Sumbi felt weak and dizzy. He dropped his skein of yarn on the floor many times.

Scene 1
Dayang Sumbi:
(angry) aaahhh! Fall again! Fall again! I'm too lazy to take it again!
I swear! Whoever it is, if someone takes my spun thread, if it's a man, I'll make him my
husband, if it's a woman I'll make him my brother.

Narrator:
After the words of the oath were uttered, a powerful dog named Tumang arrived.

Tumang:
This is the spun yarn, Princess!

Dayang Sumbi:
(shocked) Haaahhh?? Why does a dog have to take my spun yarn? Which means that like it or
not, I have to carry out my vows and marry this dog.

Narrator:
Then Dayang Sumbi and Tumang married and lived happily until they were blessed with a child
who was a human child but had magical powers like his father. This child was named
Sangkuriang.

When he was growing up, Sangkuriang was always accompanied to play by a dog named
Tumang, whom he knew only as a loyal dog, not as his father. Sangkuriang grew into a
handsome and brave young man.
One day Dayang Sumbi called her son Sangkuriang.

Scene 2

Dayang Sumbi:
Son, mother is going to throw a party. Go deer hunting in the forest with Tumang.

Sangkuriang:
OK, mother.

Narrator:
Sangkuriang arrived in a forest.
Scene 3
Sangkuriang:
Where else can I get a deer? From this morning until noon, I explored this forest but I didn't
find a single deer. I am very tired. But I don't want to disappoint mother. I don't want to go
home, if it doesn't bring any results. I'm sorry Tumang, I have to direct this arrow at you.

Narrator:
With great compulsion he took an arrow and aimed it at Tumang. And.....
Not long after that, Tumang was dying and then died.

When he arrived home, Sangkuriang handed over the Tumang meat to his mother.

Scene 4

Sangkuriang:
Mother, this is the deer meat I caught.

Dayang Sumbi:
Thank you darling. You're so great. Mother is very happy, son. You're already good at deer
hunting.

Narrator:
After receiving the sangkuriang game meat, Dayang Sumbi continued her party. Shortly after
the party was over, Dayang Sumbi remembered Tumang.

Scene 5

Dayang Sumbi:
Where is Tumang? I haven't seen him since yesterday. Let me ask Sangkuriang.
Sangkuriang! Sangkuriang!

Sangkuriang:
Why did you call me?

Dayang Sumbi:
Where is Tumang, son? Since yesterday, mother hasn't seen him. It seems like the last day was
yesterday, he was with you. So, where is he now?

Sangkuriang:
(silenced and afraid to hear his mother's question).
Oh, Tumang is dead, mother.

Dayang Sumbi:
Dead??? So who killed him?

Sangkuriang:
Yesterday, when I was hunting in the forest, I explored the entire forest from morning until
noon, but I didn't find a single deer. I don't want to disappoint mother. If I go home I don't bring
any prey. Then I aimed my arrow at Tumang. Then, then... I handed the meat over to mother.
Dayang Sumbi:
What???!! So, so the meat that you handed over to mother yesterday was Tumang's meat??

Sangkuriang:
That's right, mother.

Dayang Sumbi:
(angry) Haaaahhhh! You child doesn't know himself! You are a killer!!!

Narrator:
It was no joke that Dayang Sumbi was angry when she heard the story. He accidentally hit
Sangkuriang on the head with the rice spoon he was holding. Sangkuriang was also injured.

Sangkuriang:
Ouch!!! Why did you hit me? That's how angry my mother was with me. Sangkuriang is
disappointed in mother! Well, to atone for my mistake, I will go wandering.

Dayang Sumbi:
(his anger subsides) Sangkuriang! Sangkuriang! Don't go son. Mother is sorry, son, for hurting
you and calling you a murderer. Mom really loves you. Come back, kid!

Narrator:
But unfortunately, it's all over. Sangkuriang still walked away leaving his mother.
Dayang Sumbi also prayed to the gods so that she could be reunited with her son. His prayers
were heard by the gods in heaven. Dayang Sumbi was given eternal youth and beauty, even
more beautiful than before.

Many years later, Sangkuriang, who had traveled all over the world, decided to return to his
hometown. When he arrived there, Sangkuriang was surprised because everything had changed.
He was even more surprised when on the road he met a woman who was none other than Dayang
Sumbi. But they didn't recognize each other.

Scene 6

Sangkuriang:
Hmmmm! Who is that beautiful girl? I was really amazed to see it. I want to get to know her
and want to ask for her to be my wife.

Dayang Sumbi:
Eh! Who is that handsome young man at the end of the road? He's been watching me ever
since. I don't know what to do with it. The young man was very handsome. The young man
was very charming. I want to be his wife if he wants to propose to me to be his wife.

Sangkuriang:
Hi, you are very beautiful. I was very impressed by what he did. I really want to propose to
you. Will you be my wife?

Dayang Sumbi:
Yes Yes. Of course I'm willing. I am willing to be your wife. You're so handsome.
Narrator:
One day Sangkuriang asked to leave to go hunting. He asked Dayang Sumbi to help tidy up his
headband.

Scene 7

Sangkuriang:
Dinda, I want to go hunting in the forest. Please tidy up my headband, okay?

Dayang Sumbi:
Yes, Kanda. (Surprised while looking at the wound on Sangkuriang's head and looking at his
face then scared) Haaahhh??? There is a scar on my future husband's head. And this scar is
exactly like the wound of my previous child who had gone abroad.
Kanda? There's a scar on your head. Wounded by what?

Sangkuriang:
Yes, that's right Dinda. This scar on my head is because my mother once hit me. My mother
was very angry with me at that time. After that incident, then I left. I left my mother alone.

Dayang Sumbi:
(talking to himself) Ooohh! So, so, he, he, my son Sangkuriang who used to wander is now
back in front of me. And, and, his face also turns out to be very similar to my son Sangkuriang.
Duuuh, how is this? The handsome young man who will be my future husband is my own son. I
almost married my own son. I have to cancel my proposal process later!

Sangkuriang:
Well, it's finished. I've finished my hunting gear. I'll go first, sis.

Dayang Sumbi:
Be careful Kanda.

Narrator:
Dayang Sumbi became confused.

Dayang Sumbi:
Duuuhhh.., how can I prevent me from marrying Sangkuriang? Sangkuriang is my own son. I
have to find a way to prevent her from marrying Sangkuriang.

Narrator:
After Sangkuriang returned from hunting, Dayang Sumbi tried to explain the problem.

Scene 8

Dayang Sumbi:
Sangkuriang, Sangkuriang. You, you are my son, son. The one who hurt your head in the past
was me. This is your mother's Dayang Sumbi, son. I'm sorry, son. I'm very sorry for hurting
you. My mother used to be too emotional. Mother used to be very sad when you left her. Don't
continue your desire to propose to me, son.

Sangkuriang:
aaaahhhh!!!! You're just making up stories. Impossible! You don't have to make it up. What
you said is a lie! I don't believe it!

Dayang Sumbi:
Listen my son! What you said earlier is true. You are my own son who once left me. Mother
can't marry you, Sangkuriang!

Sangkuriang: No way! I don't care who you are! Anyway, we will still get married. Because I
really love you.

Narrator:
After Dayang Sumbi explained about herself, Sangkuriang only considered it to be a passing
incident. Dayang Sumbi also thought about how to make their marriage fail.

For days Dayang Sumbi thought, and finally found a way, she finally decided to propose a
marriage condition that Sangkuriang could not possibly grant. She then met Sangkuriang.

Scene 9

Dayang Sumbi:
O my future husband, Sangkuriang, do you still want to marry me?

Sangkuriang:
Of course, Dayang Sumbi, my beautiful future wife.

Dayang Sumbi:
Then, I will put forward two conditions if you still want to marry me.

Sangkuriang:
What are the conditions?

Dayang Sumbi:
I want you to build a dam. To dam the Citarum river and build a boat to cross it. These two
conditions must be completed before dawn.

Sangkuriang:
Good! I will fulfill your conditions!

Narrator:
Not long after, Sangkuriang left Dayang Sumbi's presence and immediately went to work
carrying out Dayang Sumbi's request

Don't forget, he also uses the power he got from his father to summon genies and help them.
With mud and soil they dammed the water from rivers and springs. Some time before dawn,
Sangkuriang cut down a large tree to make a boat.

Scene 10

Dayang Sumbi:
(anxious) Duuuh, how is this? The Sangkuriang dam and boat will soon be finished. I have to
find a way to thwart Sangkuriang's work.
Narrator:
When Dayang Sumbi saw that Sangkuriang had almost finished his work, she prayed to the gods
to hinder her son's work and speed up the arrival of morning.

Dayang Sumbi:
Oh, mothers! Wake up, wake up! It was almost morning. Get up! Get up! (while banging the
clapper).

Narrator:
After waking up the residents, they then asked for help from the local community to spread red
silk cloth to the east and wake up the roosters to crow. The night atmosphere changed to dawn.

Sangkuriang:
Haaah?? The roosters were starting to crow and the clouds were starting to look reddish, a sign
that dawn was breaking. It's unusual for the sun to rise earlier than usual. This must be Dayang
Sumbi's trick.
(angry) Haaaahhhh!!! I curse you Dayang Sumbi!

Narrator:
Sangkuriang also stopped his work because he felt he had failed to fulfill Dayang Sumbi's
requirements. Very angry and annoyed, he cursed Dayang Sumbi and then destroyed the dam he
had made himself. And villages were drowning because of the dam water. Then, Sangkuriang
kicked his almost finished homemade boat into the middle of the forest until the boat was upside
down, and formed Mount Tangkuban Perahu (upturned boat).
