    Mesolithic Age

    (The Middle Stone Age)


    From the Greek word MESO means middle LITHOS means stone

    Mesolithic age existed roughly from 8000 BC between 4000 BC.

    SOCIETY

    During Palaeolithic age the environment was covered with ice, but here in Mesolithic age, the
    ice melted and the place become warmer and greener then the bigger animals died. So, human
    beings started fishing, gathering of foods and hunting smaller animals such as red deer.

    They were able to build an artificial shelter to protect themselves from natural processes.

    How did they survive at this age?

    Because they hunt, fish, and they gathered foods.

    Now since at this time the animals was smaller and faster than the animals in Palaeolithic
    age, the tools or weapons that they are using are not enough to kill those red deer or other
    small animals.

    So, what human beings need at this age were more sophisticated tools to kill those smaller
    animals.

    Technology

    TOOLS

    Microlith – Small chips and flakes of sharp stone or flint which could be set into a piece of wood
    or bone to give a cutting implement of which could be used as arrow points. (Small pointed
    blade knife)

    This microlith are used to build weapon such as spearheads and arrows that they’ll used for
    hunting and fishing.

    Now unsay kalahian between Palaeolithic and Mesolithic age when it comes of tools for
    hunting?

    Blunt stone tools for paleolithic age and Microlith for Mesolithic age.

    Microlith is much sharper than the blunt stone. So in this age it’s much easier to hunt than in
    Palaeolithic age.

    Hunting

    What exactly are dugout bouts?

    Dugout bouts are made out of tree trunks. Ilang gi dig ang tunga sa tree trunks until maka
    shape silag bouts and using this bouts they could go fishing even in rivers. So this was a major
    innovation by human kinds during Mesolithic age.

    Then after they caught meat or fish ila nanang lutuon using hot stone or fire pits for roasting
    meat, since, they already know how to control fire at this age.

    Also at this age they already develop culinary arts with the use of clay to cook their foods such
    as meat and fish.

    Another development that they have in this age was the development of circular wooden
    structured houses. But sometimes they move from one place to another where the source of
    foods and water are present.

    Also at this time they were able to identify some plant, fungi, berries, nuts and shellfish. And
    later on humans started to tame animals and the dog was the first animal to be tame. Humans
    also develop or learn how to grow crops since humans recognized some of the plants at this
    period.
