COURSE SYLLABUS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD (GE 004)

I. COURSE INFORMATION

Course Code: GE 004 - The Contemporary World

Course Description: This course essentially introduces the students to the bread and butter issues of development challenges confronting the
world in general. Using the various lenses of development like socioeconomics, politics, demography, history,
technology, and even geographical positions of the country will be studied to understand how and why contemporary
issues exists and affect the world in general.

The course is intended to facilitate the students to understand issues, concerns, and challenges of country’s growth and
development in a macro level perspective. It strives to meet this goal by stressing the role of students towards coming up
with feasible solutions hounding the world. Moreover, this course contextualizes the topics discussed in the classroom
and relate these issues and challenges in the day to day basis for appreciation and development of critical thinking.

The course topics as herein provided is divided into three major parts: for prelim, for midterm, and for final. The first part
seeks to inculcate the VGM and core values of the College and the school policies and guidelines among the students.
Moreover, the first topics introduce the students to contemporary issues, the nature and power of state/nation, the role of
government, the globalization down to global governance to understand the interconnectedness nature of our system.

The second part discusses the structures of globalization such global governance, global culture, some international
laws, globalization of religion, population and demography by region, global migration

The third and final part discusses the ways and means by which countries/nations can go forward towards a sustainable
society. The final part discusses Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainable
Practices in both developing and developing nations around the globe. Students will also watch documentary videos for

better appreciation and comparison between a developing and developed nations in terms of sustainable practices.
Students will also be required (by group) to conduct a case study on specific contemporary issue.

VIII. Classroom Policies

Make Up Procedures:

Class work and Test: It is the responsibility of the students to obtain and turn in these assignments. Students will be given 3 days to make up
assignments for each day of an EXCUSED absence. No homework, class work, or test may be made up if an absence is UNEXCUSED.
Cheating: Cheating in any form will not be tolerated. Any and all students found to be cheating will receive a zero on that assignment or test and
a discipline referral.
Tardiness: The 1st – 3rd tardy will be documented. The 4th and subsequent tardy will result in a discipline referral to OSA (Office of Students
Affairs)

Classroom Rules:

1. Attend class regularly.

2. Don’t be late in my class otherwise, no valid reasons cannot enter the classroom.
3. All school rules, regulations, instructions, and social norms are always to be observed and followed.
4. Your attendance is regularly checked and monitored from the start (e.g face-to-face and online class). If absent, be sure to return with a
valid excuse letter and other pertinent documents like a hospital certificate, etc.
5. While in campus, wear the prescribed uniform, ID and decent attire.
6. The use of any mobile or electronic gadgets while in class is strictly prohibited.
7. Never attempt to cheat. Any form of CHEATING and DISHONESTY shall be dealt accordingly and will deduct 50% of the total score.
8. Be polite and respectful of others. Practice virtual and face-to-face behavior with respect.
9. No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom.
10. Class group chat should be intended only for a class purposes, and no one is allowed to post unnecessary comments unless there is a
valid reason with the permission of the instructor.
11. If you have questions communicate with your instructor politely at working hours or at the agreed consultation time only.
12. When there is submission of learning task, etc. do not forget to write your complete name, course, year, name of instructor, subject matter
and class code.
