Laboratory Activity No. 1

Bottoms up!

I. INTRODUCTION
Volcanoes are a key part of the Earth system. Most of Earth’s atmosphere, water, and
crust were delivered by volcanoes, and volcanoes continue to recycle earth materials. Volcanic
eruptions are common. More than a dozen is usually erupting at any time somewhere on Earth,
and close to 100 erupt in any year (Loughlin et al., 2015).

II. OBJECTIVES

1. Analyse the different types of hazards associated with volcanic eruptions and identify
safety measures and precautions to mitigate risks.
2. Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exploring the cause-and-effect
relationships within a volcanic system and proposing potential improvements or
modifications to the experiment.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in conducting a volcanic experiment, encompassing the setup,
observation, and documentation of various volcanic phenomena.
4. Understand the basic principles of volcanic activity by familiarizing the different
volcanic processes including the processes leading to eruptions and the factors
influencing volcanic behaviour.
5. Promote collaborative learning in investigating the Positive and Negative effects of
Volcanic eruption.

III. Estimated Time frame.

60 minutes
IV. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Materials:
 Gawgaw
 Paper
 1.5-liter empty bottle
 Paint
 Glue stick
 Paint brushes
 Cardboard
 Illustration board

Equipment:
 Glue gun
 Scissors
 Cutter

V. PROCEDURES

1. Prepare and cut up cardboard for the base of the volcano.

2. Put hot glue on the bottom of the bottle and stick it on the cardboard make sure its secured.
3. Make a lot of crumpled paper and put it at the side of a bottle until it becomes the shape of a
volcano.
4. Secure the crumpled pieces of paper by hot-glueing them together.
5. Cut long strips of paper.
6. Make your gawgaw mixture; Mix water and gaw-gaw powder until it has a slightly watery
consistency.
7. dip it into a mixture of water and gaw-gaw. Cover the entire structure of the volcano with the
strips of paper dipped in gaw-gaw, then wait for it to dry.
8. After the structure dries, paint the volcano with a white coat for the base, followed by brown to
replicate the reference.
9. apply the volcano's different colors of paint depending on what was your theme of your
volcano.
10. Paint half of the landscape with different shades of blue and white, imitating the look of the sea,
On the other side of the landscape, glue gravel or tiny rocks to imitate the look of the sand.
11. Add finishing touches by adding fake plants.
VI. OBSERVATION
Make a documentation of your Volcano before during and after the eruption.

VII. POST LABORATORY QUESTIONS

1. What place served as inspiration for the volcano you made?

2. How do you describe the morphology of your volcano?

3. How does the type of eruption affect the structure of your volcano?

4. Which among the different materials you used affect the viscosity of the lava?

5. What were the distinct dangers exhibited by your volcano in the course of the experiment?

6. How do you mitigate the hazards caused by the volcanic eruption demonstrated in your
experiment?

7. How does volcanic eruption provide positive contributions to our planet?

8. What is the underlying causes of volcanic eruption in your experiment and how would you
relate it to a real-life volcanic eruption?

9. What are the things that can still be improved in your volcano?
10. How does the experiment help your group to practice our school core values?

VIII. Conclusion/Generalization (What have you learned?)
