INTRODUCTION
Rationale
The energy problem, especially electricity, has continued to grow in the past years. And this
affects people’s lives especially in urban places where many companies need electrical power for
working. Power interruptions are often experienced here in the Philippines cause by excessive
electricity demands. This happens when the community demands more electricity.

This study focuses on developing a spin mop to generate and store electricity using a direct
current (DC) motor generator. Numerous of inventions are created to help with the problem of
electricity. Transforming other energies to produce electricity, like solar power. A spin mop is an
effective cleaning tool with a round and absorbent head that’s wrung out using a spinning
mechanism. Connecting a DC motor generator to the spinning mechanism can generate and store
electricity while using it.

World is a storehouse of energy. We all know that energy can be created nor destroyed but can be
transformed from one to another. But we are wasting resources. But we are wasting resources
that can produce energy as if they are limitless. If we renew and reuse the energy we waste, it
would help in some way to the problem of scarcity of energy, which is the major treat of present
world. The energy crisis is the concern that the world’s demands on the limited natural
resources that are used to power industrial society are diminishing as the demand rises. These
natural resources are in limited supply. While they do occur naturally, it can take hundreds of
thousands of years to replenish the stores. The crisis in electricity is one of the challenges that the
Philippines faces, especially during the summer season where more energy is consumed due to
the extreme heat of the weather. As predicted, the Philippines is heading into a severe "summer"
power crisis. One peculiarity of the widespread use of English in the Philippines is the mismatch
between seasonal names and the months of the year. The Philippine term for this period is
literally "the time of heat," but among English speakers this is "summer," rather to the
bemusement of Americans who associate that term with June through August.

According to International Trade Administration, the Philippines is facing a mounting energy

crisis as the Malampaya gas fields deplete, supplying 30% of Luzon`s energy consumption, are
expected to be depleted by 2024. An ever increasing population, an Administration-mandated
infrastructure boom, and some of the highest electricity costs in S.E. Asia all combine to present
formidable challenges.
The Philippine Government has stated that it envisions the Philippines being energy self
sufficient, utilizing a combination of fossil fuels and renewable energy as solutions. About 43
GW of additional capacity will be required by 2040, and the country is clearly behind schedule in
developing solutions. The current energy mix is composed of coal (47%), natural gas (22%),
renewable energy (hydro, geothermal, wind, solar) (24%), and oil-based (6.2%) with current
energy capacity at 23GW.

Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources that are naturally
replenished on a human timescale. It includes sources such as sunlight, wind, the movement of
water, and geothermal heat. Although most renewable energy sources are sustainable, some are
not. Renewable power is booming, as innovation brings down costs and starts to deliver on the
promise of a clean energy future. American solar and wind generation are breaking records and
being integrated into the national electricity grid without compromising reliability.

Renewable energy, often referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes
that are constantly replenished. For example, sunlight and wind keep shining and blowing, even
if their availability depends on time and weather. While renewable energy is often thought of as a
new technology, harnessing nature’s power has long been used for heating, transportation,
lighting, and more. Wind has powered boats to sail the seas and windmills to grind grain. The
sun has provided warmth during the day and helped kindle fires to last into the evening. But over
the past 500 years or so, humans increasingly turned to cheaper, dirtier energy sources, such as
coal and gas. Solar power and wind power are just two of the types of renewable energies.

Mechanical energy is also one of the renewable energies we use every day. For example, wind
turbines get their mechanical energy from the power of wind. As the arms of the turbines spin,
electricity is being generated. Transforming electrical energy to mechanical energy can be done
with electric motors. An electric generator does the opposite, converting mechanical energy into
electricity.

Generating power from a cleaning tool like a spin mop is possible by using electric generators.
Mops are pretty commonplace and great tool when it comes to cleaning whatever the surface. A
spin mop is a wet mop with twist. The bucket that the spin mop comes with features a spinning
rinse basket. There is a mechanism in the handle that allows the mop to be spun, allowing for
faster drying. This mechanism allows the basket to spin as well. This rotation can be use to
generate electricity while doing chores. Thus, this study will be conducted to test the capability
of this invention to generate and store electricity.
Scientific Basis/Theoretical Framework
This research was based on the study, Pedal Power Generation: An Implementation of Stationary
Bike Generator by Ron Edward Guia, Aodrel Dave Ilagan, Lorenz Gerald Sauz, Engr. Favis
Joseph Balinado (2020). This study shows the design and development of an alternative source
of electricity in supplying one household that is in rural areas. With the use stationary bike, the
user can be productive in different ways beside of being active in cardio workout but also
productive in such away the calorie burned upon using the pedal can produce a certain amount of
voltage that is a part of power.

Despite not having the whole country, electrified, Power Generation companies still experience
shortage in supplying enough power to the grid. This in turn results to rotational brownouts that
we experience especially during summer. As we know, most of the daily activities today require
a stable supply of power. Automated factories may lose millions of pesos when they are affected
by rotational brownouts. That in turn affects the economy and leads to more problems. The
proponents aim to develop a prototype that is used to convert mechanical energy into electrical
energy. On the other hand, it is used to harness electrical energy by means of the human effort in
doing cardio workout by using stationary bike.

This study deals about today’s world global warming & other related environmental issues
becomes an important matter of concern in the angle of environmental pollution. To tackle this
problem, they must decrease our dependence on fossil fuel especially for generation of electricity
and increase the use of green-energy or environment friendly method of electricity generation.
This research discussed about a stationary bike which can generate electricity when someone
starts to pedal on it.

The general objective of the project is to design and develop equipment that can generate
electricity through manual labor. This is to prove that manual mechanical input can produce
stable power. Despite not having the whole country, electrified, Power Generation companies
still experience shortage in supplying enough power to the grid. This in turn results to rotational
brownouts that we experience especially during summer. As we know, most of the daily activities
today require a stable supply of power. Automated factories may lose millions of pesos when
they are affected by rotational brownouts. That in turn affects the economy and leads to more
problems. The proponents aim to develop a prototype that is used to convert mechanical energy
into electrical energy.
Objectives of the Study
Generally, this research study aimed to develop an electrical power-generator using a spin mop,
and to test its capability of generating electricity from mechanical energy.

Specifically, it aimed to determine the:

1. Possibility of constructing a spin mop as electrical power-generator.
2. Efficiency of this invention in terms of:
a. time of charging
b. number of cell phones it can fully charge
c. general appearance
d. general usability
e. cost
